This story of Denise a 22 year old Jamaican-American girl who has been hired as a sober companion to keep Ben Moreau away from his druggie lifestyle is a story I want to self-publish because I want to play around with certain tropes and genres. You may sign up to receive new chapters of my stories at: http://radishfiction.com/?a=CaroleMcDonnell In the year 2255 Ellie finds herself in the unenviable position of being loved by Woden, the Nephilim Prince of the New York Region. A member of the Creed, Ellie wants nothing to do with this being whom she considers demon-spawn. She is already fighting her attraction to his best friend, the Nephilim rebel, Siddhart. But the upcoming annual Balance ritual and an incomprehensible prophecy declares that a stubborn Scarred Woman will bring Disruption to the Nephilim community. Ellie prides herself on her integrity, but, marriage to a Nephilim prince would excuse her from the ritual and probable death. There is no one more stubborn or scarred than Ellie. But could she really be the one who is fated to save the various humanoid populations of Earth? And would she really give up her faith and religion in order to bring salvation to the descendants of demons? The Daughters of Men is a fantasy novel about:1. Four types of humans -the clones, the bio-genetically engineered chimeras, the semi-demonic Nephilim, and "normal" humans. 2. Three lovers - Woden, a Nephilim Prince; Siddhart, Woden's captain and rebellious best friend; and Ellie, the human Black woman they both love who may be fated to bring disaster or salvation to the Nephilim.3. Two prophecies - the prophecy of the stubborn Scarred Woman fated to bring Disruption, and the prophecy of the Beautiful One who will bring peace and salvation to the Nephililm. 4. And one decision - Should Ellie marry Woden? Why does she resist? Why is she being so stubborn? Could it be that she is indeed the prophesied one? You bet she is.…

In a Solar System far away, there exists a planet where all of the inhabitants are deaf. They have evolved as a community over many millennia and are traders across their solar system. But when humanoids from other planets come telling them that their deafness is a disability and that they can make a lot of money if they get ear implants, the people on this planet must decide what to do. Is deafness their heritage? Or is it holding them back from joining the larger world? The story's main protagonist is Mist whose daughter wants to get the implant because other children are getting them. Mist has always been a fighter and already doesn't fit in because she doesn't fit into her husband's class. She is against the implants. However the rest of her husband's family is. The new change -- brought by outsiders-- will change not only Mist's family but a whole society as well. This story is my most honored, I think. It is taught in classes across the world, in the UK, the US, and in Poland. It was anthologized in the acclaimed anthology So Long Been Dreaming. It is about a world of deaf inhabitants who have to deal with the imperialist Federation.…

This story, which takes place in an alternate America where the USA is divided into red states (which are conservative, white, and religious) and blue states (which are progressive, prone to persecuting Christians, and full of minorities.) This story was published in an anthology called Jigsaw Nation. Before its present incarnation, this story won first prize in one short story contest and third prize in the western association short story contest. In the story a young Christian white man Bradley has brought his Christian black wife back home to Wyoming, which is now a red state. They do not fit into any of the states. In life, few people do. The hurdle the young man faces is his racist mother. The story takes place in a cafe where all the characters know or know of each other and are aware of the mother's racism. The scene is being watched by a young white man who is in love with a Native American women. The narrator's mother, like everyone else in the cafe, is wondering about the outcome of the family drama . She spends a long time "commiserating" with the other racist mother, not realizing that the more she speaks and the longer the tense exchange continues, the more the narrator's commitment to marry the Native American woman from the reservoir grows. In the end, he decides to challenge his mother although she is against the relationship.…

This is the prologue and intro to my award-nominated novel, Wind Follower, a Christian epic fantasy, published by Wildside. This is the only excerpt I will upload. Here is the summary.Although it is not entirely to her liking, grief-stricken Satha, a dark-skinned woman from a poor Theseni clan weds young Loic, the wealthy Doreni son of the king's First Captain. Loic, graced with ability to see into the hearts and minds of others, begins to help Satha overcome her sorrows.Despite coming from different tribes, they begin to forge a life together. But when Satha's own compassion is used against her and a treacherous enemy contrives to dishonor her in Loic's absence, Loic's love turns to anger and disgust. Embittered, Loic must still avenge his honor and Satha's and he sets out on a journey that brings despair as well as spiritual discovery.Battling him are the Arkhai, the spirits of the land who know his quest will lead him toward the God whom they have usurped. After his departure, Satha is kidnapped, sold into slavery and learns, first hand, how cruel the pioneering Angleni tribe can be. Both face great hardship, danger and anguish apart, but with the Creator's aid there remains hope they will be reunited and heal the love the world has torn asunder.©2007 Carole McDonnell (P)2014 Wildside Press, LLChttp://www.amazon.com/Wind-Follower-Carole-McDonnell/dp/0809557797/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8…

The Constant Tower -- Intro and part of the first chapter

The Constant Tower -- Intro and part of the first chapter

65 1 1

This is one of my novels which is published by Wildside. It has been nominated for a Clive Staples Award for 2013, which is the award given for best Christian Speculative fiction I'm only posting the first chapter here. Here is the synopsisSickly fifteen year old Prince Psal, the son of the nature-blessed warrior-king Nahas, should have been named Crown Prince of all Wheel Clan lands. A priest-physician like his friend Ephan, Psal lacks a warrior’s heart, yet he desires to earn Nahas’s respect and become a clan chief. If he cannot do this, he must escape his clan altogether. But his love for Cassia, the daughter of his father’s enemy, and his own weaknesses work against him. When war comes, Psal defends Ktwala and her daughter Mahari, wronged by Nahas, and speaks out against the atrocities his clan commits, further jeopardizing his future. And now the mysterious towers that keep humans safe from the Creator's ancient curse are rebelling. A prophecy exists—not that Psal believes such matters—of three great ones who will find the Constant Tower and break the power of the third moon. Could Psal, Ephan, and Mahari be those great ones? Psal must risk losing his father’s respect to find his destiny, and with his friends face the dangers of the unmaking night to find the Constant Tower and save all of humanity. "Carole McDonnell is a first-class world-builder. A unique, powerhouse epic, The Constant Towers is a treasure trove of great characters, compelling cultural details and political machinations, all lovingly detailed in evocative prose. Yay!" – Stefan Petrucha, author Dead Mann Walking http://www.amazon.com/Constant-Tower-Carole-McDonnell/dp/1434442063/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8…
