Broomstick Incident

"Come on Y/N! We haven't got all day!" Shouted Harry.

It was Sunday morning. McGonagall told me last night that I'm going to have to learn how to fly - and that means I have to be able to ride a broomstick. I asked Harry to help me and he said yes with no hesitation and a massive grin on his face. Harry suggested that we should practice on the massive field outside the castle and I agreed, not wanting to argue with him.

"I'm pretty sure we do." I mumbled, squinting my eyes once we stepped outside.

Harry scoffed and walked to the middle of the field. I reluctantly followed him, way too tired to smile or be enthusiastic. I nearly bumped into Harry as he stopped and turned around to face me. I rubbed my eyes and looked around.

A few students were sitting around the edge of the field, it was mostly Slytherins. I saw Parkinson, Crabbe and Goyle whispering things to each other and snickering. There were also some other girls sitting with them. I'm pretty sure they were part of Parkinson's Slytherin girl gang. I guess they got the memo.

Sitting not too far away from them were Daphne Greengrass and, of course, Blaise. There was also a girl with long, wavy brown hair. She looked a couple of years younger than us. They noticed me looking at them and smiled at me. I gave a weary smile and sighed. I turned back to Harry and he put a hand on my shoulder and took a step closer to me.

"Hey, don't worry about them. You'll be fine, I promise." Harry smiled. He took a step back and held out his arm that had one of the broomsticks.

"Now come on, let's begin!"

I grabbed the broomstick from his hand and he cleared his throat.

"Flight is one of the primary methods of Wizarding transportation, along with Floo Powder, Portkeys and Apparition. It involves a person or people using an object that has been bewitched to fly through the air to another location." Harry explained, pacing back and forth, looking like an actual professor.

"We're going to start as soon as possible. First step is to learn how to mount your broomstick without sliding off. Now watch me." He continued.

Harry stopped pacing and showed me how to mount the broomstick.

"Now you do it. It's simple."

I hesitantly mounted the broomstick, copying of Harry. I managed to get on pretty well.

"Amazing! See, you're already a natural." Harry beamed, "Now that you know how to mount your broomstick, let's move on to the more advanced stuff. Now we are going to liftoff! I'll show you then you'll do it too."

Harry kicked off the ground hard and rose a few feet in the air. He did it like a pro - keeping the broomstick steady. The nerves that had finally left rapidly came back again. Was I really ready for this?

I shook the negative thoughts out of my head. I kicked off the ground, maybe a bit too hard, and slowly began levitating. The aggressive kick off the ground caused the broom to shake slightly and the butterflies in my stomach came creeping back. I stopped once I had reached Harry's level and let out a breathe I didn't even know I was holding in.

"Brilliant! Isn't so hard, eh?" Harry smirked at me.

"Shut up." I mumbled, looking down at the ground.

We weren't that high up - only a couple feet off the ground. But it still felt extremely scary. It's not like I have a fear of heights or anything, but the thought of being in the air on a bit of wood with very little protection was not very settling. And actually doing it was worse.

"So, can we call it a day?" I questioned Harry, looking back up at him.

"What? Of course not!" Harry responded, a confused look on his face.

"What do you mean?"

"I think there is one more thing you should do." Harry said with a sly smirk on his face.

What does this boy want me to do? I didn't respond, just gave him a bewildered look.

"You should fly around the field!"

No, no fucking way! I opened my mouth to say something but didn't. What's the worst that could happen?

"Fine, whatever." Was all that I said.

"Yay! I'll show you." Harry had a massive smile on his face, obviously happy I agreed so easily.

Harry quickly did a lap around the field. He was amazing. No wonder he's one of the best quidditch player that has attended Hogwarts! Within a minute, Harry stopped in front of me.

"See, simple! It's easier than it looks. Now you have a go."

I nodded my head and sighed. Well, here it goes.

I pushed slightly into the broomstick and the broom jolted a bit as I slowly moved forward. I gave one small glance at Harry and he gave me a reassuring smile. I pushed into the broomstick again but this time with a bit more force. Before I knew it, I was soaring through the air. A wave of nerves rushed through my body but were soon gone once I picked up the pace. I had a massive grin on my face as the wind blew in my hair. I turned to Harry and noticed he was clapping and cheering me on.

"Yes, Y/N! You're doing amazing!"

I giggled at how happy he was.

Suddenly, the broomstick started shaking violently. The grin on my face immediately turned into a stressful frown. I lost control of the broom. It was going crazy; up, down, left and right. The broomstick started heading to the ground. I tried pulling it up but I couldn't. I closed my eyes, I was terrified.

I crashed down to the ground and kept tumbling forward. Suddenly, a pair of black shoes stopped me. I rubbed my throbbing head and whined.

"Oh, I'm sorry!"

I looked up and squinted my eyes from the sun. After my eyes adjusted, I saw a tall, blonde boy standing above me. Draco Malfoy. He put his hand out for me to grab and I did. I stumbled a bit as I stood up.

"Hey, are you okay?" Draco asked, a worried look on his face.

"Yeah, a little flying accident. I guess." I laughed nervously, a fake smile planted onto my face.

Draco nodded slowly and then turned around. I moved my head to see who or what he was looking at. It was a group of Slytherins. Parkinson, Crabbe, Goyle and some other Slytherins were sniggering and pointing at me. He turned back to look at me.

"Are you sure it was an accident?"

I shrugged my shoulders.

"Y/N!" I turned around and saw Harry running towards me.

Malfoy's frown turned into his classic smirk. He took a step closer and whispered into my ear,

"Next time you have to learn how to ride a broomstick, don't ask Pottah. Ask me, alright?" Draco winked at me as he walked away. I giggled at his comment.

He growled at Harry as he walked past him. Harry rolled his eyes in response.

"Merlin's beard, are you okay?" Harry questioned once he had reached me.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I guess I'm just not good at flying as you are, huh?" I joked, trying to ease the tension.

Harry smiled but his face turned serious almost immediately.

"You sure you're ok? You don't look too good." Harry said, examining my body.

I nodded. If I'm being honest, I didn't feel too good. The fall was pretty rough and I heard a small crack when I stood up. But I couldn't tell him that. He would immediately become the worried best friend he is.

"Do you want to try again or-"

"No!" I said quickly, interrupting Harry, "No, I think we should just..."

I wasn't able to finish my sentence. I started feeling light-headed. Dizzy. But luckily Harry didn't notice that. Maybe I'm just tired. Yeah, that's it.

"Well, come on. Let's go inside, you worked-"

Harry said more but I couldn't hear the rest. All the noise became quieter. My vision became blurry. My head started pounding again. My heart slowed down. My breathing became heavier.

"Hey, you alright?" Harry said, sounding distorted.

I collapsed onto the ground.

"Y/N!" Was the last thing I heard before everything turned pitch black.

Draco's POV:
"Hey, you alright?" I heard Potter's annoying voice say.

I turned around and saw Y/N fall to the ground.

Without thinking, I rushed over to her.

"Y/N!" I shouted.

I crouched down next to her body. I looked over to Potter and saw that he was frozen in shock.

"Pottah, go get a teacher! Quickly!" I commanded, trying to sound calm.

Potter nodded his head and ran inside the castle. Once he was out of view, my eyes went back to Y/N's body. Fortunately, she was still breathing, but just barely. I stroked her hair as I felt a tear fall down my face.

"Don't worry, you'll be okay."
