Now or never.
Lewis had carefully planned for this, even keeping a bag packed at all times in case he needed to hurry and leave.
He snuck downstairs, and, when the back door was found to be locked, he slid open a window and left through it. His heart was beating out of his chest, out of both fear and excitement.
He walked along the road and luckily enough, managed to hail a cab. He gave the driver Logan's address, then tried to relax. Soon, they'd be safe. Away from Lewis' father and the stress of having to hide every single moment.
When they pulled up in front of the apartments, Lewis told the cab driver, "Wait here, please. I'll be right back."
He'd never taken those stairs so quickly. As soon as his hand touched the door, Logan opened it, his own bag of belongings held tightly. "Are you ready?" He asked.
"As ready as I'll ever be. There's a cab waiting for us, come on."
And just like that, they left almost everything behind."
——
"Logan, is that you?" Lewis called out as the door opened, turning off the faucet. He dried his hands on a dish towel as he peeked around the doorway, grin on his lips when he saw the other man.
Logan returned the grin, closing the front door and locking it. "Hey," he murmured, giving him a quick hug, then starting towards the stairs. "You were out working in the garden today, weren't you?"
Lewis followed him, like he did every other day. "How'd you know?"
"You've got dirt on your face."
"Does that surprise you?"
"Not at all. You should get cleaned up. I invited Ezra over for dinner," he said, opening up the door to his bedroom. Technically, the two of them shared it, but for appearances, they kept Lewis' things in another room. Didn't want people getting the wrong idea.
He frowned, running his hand through his hair. "Is he doing okay? He's not going to smash any of our dishes this time, right?"
"He said he has some good news. I can't promise anything on the dishes, though." Logan cupped Lewis' jaw and tilted his chin up, kissing him softly. "Go get cleaned up, then I'll help make dinner."
—
Ezra showed up around an hour later. He had an uncharacteristic smile on his lips as he told the two of them to cover their eyes. Both were wary about it, but decided to just go along with it. It wasn't long before Ezra's low voice told them they could look.
Lewis almost burst into tears, because standing there next to Ezra was Ronnie, someone that he thought he'd never see again.
Logan got to Ronnie first, pulling the delicate man into a warm hug. The two of them exchanged hushed words, tears in both of their eyes. None actually spilled over until Lewis got to hug him, hiding his face in his shoulder to try and conceal the emotion that overcame him.
Both Lewis and Logan seemed reluctant to let go of Ronnie, as if he were just an illusion that'd disappear as soon as they separated. They'd missed him a lot, he was such a sweetheart.
Dinner was spent talking and laughing, the atmosphere lighter than it'd been since they'd fled the city late last year. Even if, for some reason, both Logan and Lewis seemed a tad bit nervous.
After Lewis cleared the table, the four of them moved to the living room, each couple occupying one of the couches. Almost immediately, Lewis leaned into Logan's side, curling into him like always.
That is, until he sat up to better find something in his pocket. "I just remembered something and I can't think of a better time for it."
Logan just watched him fondly. This was normal; Lewis would find something he just had to show Logan, and then he'd forget about it. But when he finally pulled out the small box, Logan's jaw dropped.
Lewis' eyes were closed as he opened the box and spoke, his voice wavering a bit. "I, um, know that we can't really do this legally, but... I love you more than I've ever loved anyone. So, would you maybe want to-?"
Logan cut him off with a breathless sort of laugh as he dug in his own pocket. "Lewis, you idiot. I was going to ask you the same thing."
As the two of them put on the rings, Ronnie couldn't help but call out to Lewis. "Are you still going to tell me you two are 'just friends'?"
He shook his head, laughing just a bit as he clung to Logan. "You wouldn't believe me, even if I tried."
"For the record, I never believed it."
