After a few minutes, I pulled away, wiped my eyes, and took a shuddering breath.

"We have to find food," I said, looking at the forest that lined the road.

"Okay," Enid sighed. "You go ahead. I'll stay with Judith in the car."

I nodded and headed into the forest, patting my back pocket to make sure I still had my knife.

Stepping lightly, I searched the forest for around a half an hour, finding absolutely nothing.

Sighing in defeat, I decided to head back.

I needed to have better luck hunting in the future if me, Enid, and Judith were going to survive.

Judith....

Oh no, she wasn't old enough to eat meat. What on Earth was I going to feed her?

I pushed the thought away. Enid will come up with something. She always does.

Stepping back on the road, I checked to make sure there were no walkers.

When I didn't see any, I looked at the car. Judith was asleep in Enid's arms and Enid was staring out the window.

I sighed at the sight. Enid was right. My dad and everyone else may be gone, but I still had these two girls that needed me. That I needed. I was going to protect them, no matter the cost.

I opened the door and got in the driver's seat.

Enid looked at me expectantly.

I shook my head and glanced at Judith. "I couldn't find anything for us to eat, let alone Judith."

She sighed in disappointment and looked back out the window.

I sighed. "We need to keep driving."

Enid didn't look at me. She simply nodded.

I started the car up and drove at a slow pace.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

It was dark out. Judith had woken up and cried for a little while but Enid had managed to calm her down. Enid was now asleep, her head against the window. Judith had simply sat in Enid's arms, looking around.

Every time she looked at me, her expression seemed to say So, bro, what's up? which made me smile.

She didn't seem worried. She was just a little girl in a terrible world. She was the only thing that kept me from going insane.

I kept my gaze on the road. I yawned but forced myself to stay awake. I really wished I had a Diet Coke, but then I remembered the circumstances and yawned again.

Enid's head suddenly shot up.

"Oh, my God," she said aghast.

I looked at her in confusion. "What?"

She looked at me and smiled. "We're such idiots!" she said and laughed.

"How are we idiots?" I asked.

She just continued smiling and ordered, "Stop the car."

I had no idea what was going on but I obeyed her command.

When we stopped, she gave Judith to me and got a flashlight out of the glove compartment. She got out of the car and I followed her.

"What's going on?" I asked as we walked to the back of the car.

She put her hand on the truck.

"Remember how every car from Alexandria was required to have emergency food and baby food in the trunk?" she asked expectantly.

I widened my eyes as I realized what was happening. There was food in the trunk!

She opened the trunk and there it was...food that could last me and Enid a few months and tons of baby food for Judith.

Enid looked like she just struck gold. She laughed and got some food, taking it to the front of the car.

And I did something I hadn't done since I was in Alexandria.

I smiled.
