Chapter TwoCavera
Cavera sits down on the roof she had just climbed onto. She opened her brown sack that she had been carrying with her for the past six years. She lays her bed down. It was a piece of fabric roughly stitched into a rectangular pad that was filled with sheep wool. Next to it she sets a wooden staff with intricate carvings and letters engraved into it. She reaches further in and grabbed a piece of small fabric covered in small stitches making up a lumpy picture of half of a palace. She grabbed a needle and a spool of red thread and started stitching. Five minutes later she found her stomach growling hungrily. Cavera jumps down from the room and makes her way down the deserted alleyway. The alley opens up to reveal a large dirt street bustling with traders and city folk.
"Jewels for you?" A man with wandering eyes and an uncombed beard says with a greedy smile as he holds out a necklace sparkling with green and blue gems.
"Uh, no." Cavera answers as she races to get away from the man. She turns and joins a group of twenty or so people going the opposite direction. She walks down the street eyeing a vendor selling bread. The lady behind it glares back at her and she puts her head down as a man wearing a dark navy blue uniform passes scanning the crowd. He works for the Opoz, Official Police Of Zeyjour. Really all they do is take stray kids and people with no homes and put them in prison. She passes a cart full of fruit and loaves of bread. The man behind it is bartering with a woman who has two boys at her feet. As the owner looks away Cavera snatches a loaf of bread and a mango from the stand. The man turns and grabs her wrist tightly.
"You thieve!" He shouts angrily, "I will turn you in!" The woman looks on with an interested look on her face. Cavera sends her a pleading look.
"She's mine," The woman says to the man, "She was just getting what I wanted." The owner looks back at the woman, his grimy hands still holding Cavera tightly.
"I thought you wanted apples?" He says looking confusedly back and forth between Cavera and the shopper.
"That too, I want both." She says and pays the man.
"Come with me while he can see." She whispers to Cavera as she and her sons walk off. Cavera follows gratefully. When they've turned a corner the woman stops.
"I've never had someone help me before." Cavera says. She tries to hand the bread and mango to the lady but she refuses.
"No those are for you, I was once like you, this is the least I can do." The woman says. Shocked, Cavera thanks her more than five times before the woman leaves. Cavera makes her way back to the dark red house she had put her belongings on. And climbs nimbly up the side onto the roof. She sits on her pad and rips a chunk of bread off of the loaf. She stuffs it into her mouth and greedily takes another bite. She stares into the slowly fading sun over the city of Litalie. Cavera lies down on her bed and sighs, remembering the day she left Hisung. She was just five but she was so devastated she ran away from the palace. She stowed away in the ships going to drop goods off at Zeyjor and traveled ending up at Litalie. The sound of a trumpet brakes through Cavera's thoughts. She stands up and looks over at the main street. A group of Zeyjorin soldiers were marching down the dirt road leaving puffs of dust floating in the air behind them.
"Five days ago our friends from Cato isles were raided," A tall soldier in the front of the line hollard into the sunset, " Only three children escaped to tell what happened."
Cavera scanned the line of army officials and saw three kids in the middle shivering. One is a small boy who looks like he was six, wearing just pants and a necklace of string, animal bones, and feathers. Another is a small toddler girl with a grass skirt and a shirt with small sleeves made from leaves, being held by an older girl who looked almost the same age as Cavera. The girl had long dark wavy hair curling down her back and her skin was a warm brown. She is wearing similar clothing to the other girl's but wears a necklace like the young boy.
"They told us that many of the villagers were killed and the rest were taken captive by the army of Hisung." The soldier says . He keeps talking but Cavera is lost in her own thoughts. Hisung? What is my brother doing? Is he being forced? She keeps hoping that this attack has nothing to do with her brother but the message was clear. Her brother, the Emperor of Hisung, ordered an attack on Cato.
Chapter ThreeTiger
EEEEEWWWWW THAT NAMEEEE Anyways sry for the interruption...
Tiger steps into the large hut just as the scream breaks through the quiet night. He grimaces and continues walking, knowing if he stops their plan would fail. He passes large crates of boxes and ducks beneath a small bench on the far side of the room. Just as expected he hears footsteps race into the hut and hears deep gasping breaths as the noise moves closer to the far door where Tiger is hiding
"You've got a big bounty on your head, Sir." A mocking voice of a man at the front door says.
"Give us your money and no harm will come to your family." A strong woman whispers warningly.
"No, I can still run." The gasping voice says as he moves closer to Tigers perch.
"No, you can't," Tiger said as he hops out and stands, dagger in hand, in front of the open doorway. The man in front of him wheels around. His face is as dark as night and he has jewels hanging from his neck and ears. His muscles ripple as he gives a hearty chuckle.
"You sent a young boy to do your dirty work?" The man said. Tiger growled and raised his dagger.
"Wait!" The man who had been at the front door says as he rushes up to corner the jeweled man.
"Why, Hawktail?" Tiger asked. Hawktail glares at Tiger, his blue eyes seeming to pierce him.
"Mairo had a question." Hawktail answers. A woman with deep red hair steps up from behind Hawktail.
"Your money and your life, for the safety of your family?" Mairo asks, grinning wickedly at the man who now had no means of escape.
"Neither." The man said as he raced towards Tiger.
"Wrong choice." Tiger says as the man attempts to use brute force against him. Tiger holds his knife out and slashes the man's stomach. He drops like a rock. Tiger squeezes his eyes shut and opens them again to see Mairo staring at him.
"You should be used to killing by now." She says as she tears the necklace of the dead man. Used to killing because of you. Tiger thinks as he sends a dirty look at the two adults. They ransack the rest of the house, putting bags over the heads of the maids, butlers, and family of the house. Tiger is the only one that stands between the innocents and death. Hawktail and Mairo would kill them without a second thought but Tiger has always convinced them it's unnecessary. After leaving using the stolen carriage from the manor they arrive at their camp, Radelt. Men and women rush up to them greeting them as if they just saved a family's life, not ruined one. Tiger sulks away and enters his small tent in between two larger ones belonging to his captors, Hawktail and Mairo. He steps into the sight of his sister being held by Danes, another cold blooded killer.
"I'm back, let her go!" Tiger shouts. Danes grins showing of his misshapen and missing teeth.
"Was the mission a success?" Danes asked. Tiger nods and watches Danes take the gag out of his sisters mouth and leave.
"Why don't you leave?" Isha asks.
"Because they have you." Tiger replies
"They wouldn't kill me, Danes is really nice when you're not around. He doesn't gag me until he hears your back." She says as she steps out of the tent.
"They wouldn't hesitate to kill you." Tiger says darkly. He remembers the day when they would have killed her if not for Tiger.
"Let's go to bed." Isha says as she lies down on her hay mat. Tiger follows her and lies next to her drifting off into a troubled sleep.
Tiger was eight when he heard the glass shattering. A short scream burst through the noise of the thunder and rain outside. He ran down the creaking wooden stairs and gasped at the sight before him. His mother is lying in the corner of the kitchen, motionless. His fathers body is halfway down the stairs. A much younger Danes, who Tiger didn't know at the time, runs towards Tiger. His crooked sword stretching out in front of him. He grins all his teeth fully intact and straight. Tiger kicked upwards, knocking Danes sword behind him. Tiger lunges for it and swings it upward. The blunt end cracks against Danes jaw and teeth go flying. Danes falls to the ground, knocked out. Tiger kills two other robbers and injures another by the time he finds Mairo's dark, black, stone, eyes. She was holding two year old Isha in her arms a small dagger under her neck.
"Come with us or I'll kill 'er" Mairo says, showing off her deadly grin. Tiger wakes with a start, breathing heavily. From that horrible night onwards Hawktail and Mairo have sent Tiger to do things he always regrets forcing him to kill, or they will kill Isha.
Chapter FourLiman
Liman stood in front of a large marble and stone building. He glared at it as if he were challenging it to grin. The wind rustled in the leaves above his head. He twitched as the noise of a carriage met his ears. Ducking behind a large maple tree and watched as a woman wearing a dress worth a month of food for Liman's family stepped out. His glare intensified as a man followed. He had on a large hat studded with diamonds and jewels. Following him were two young children, a girl and a boy. Hand maids and butlers raced to help the man and woman taking their coats and bags. Liman tensed as a butler held his hand out for the jeweled hat. The man wearing it handed the hat over revealing his bald head. Liman's eyes stayed on the hat as the maids and butlers bowed to the family. The bald man led his family inside the marble manor. And Liman watched as the hat was set on top of a pile of bags a young maid was holding. She wobbled from the weight as the other servants hurried away. She slowly teetered and walked towards a side door. Just before she reached it a gust of wind sent her toppling over. Bags and coats went flying. The jeweled hat, carried by the wind, flew onto some rose bushes about ten feet from the girl. The maid starred in horror at the mess.
"I'll be sacked!" She whimpered. Liman stepped out from his concealed spot and the girl jumped up as she saw him.
"Not if no one knows what happened." Liman said. He reached down and lifted a leather briefcase from the ground. The girl hurriedly followed him and gathered the other missing belongings. Liman shifted so he was blocking the girl's view of the hat.
"Thankyou, Thankyou! How can I ever repay you?" The girl asked as she wobbled under the weight of the stack in her hands.
"No need to." Liman answered as he thought of the hat behind him. The girl hurried inside. Liman raced to the bush and pulled the hat out. He was just strolling down the long driveway with the hat in his leather bag when a wail reached his ears. The handmaid raced out and knelt on the grass sobbing. She raced around frantically searching for something. Her gaze met his and Liman saw the fear in her eyes.
"Do you know- Kno-" She started but she was sobbing too hard to continue. She hiccuped as Liman walked over to her.
"Know what?" He asked quietly as the girl breathed heavily.
"Master's hat- It- It's gone!" She sobbed. Crying she stood up and gazed out at the rose bushes.
"I'll be- I'll be sacked for sure!" She wailed. Guilt reached at Liman's stomach as the maid collapsed to the ground hysterical with sobs.
"What's your name?" He asked.
"I- Ivier." She looked worriedly up at him.
"Okay Ivier, I'll help you look." Liman said before he could stop himself. Ivier stood up shakily and rushed to the rose bushes reaching her hands inside the thorny bushes. She winced and kept searching. While she was looking the other way Liman reached inside his bag and pulled the hat out, shoving it deep inside the bushes. When Ivier looked back at him He pulled the hat out and Iviers face flooded with gratitude.
"Thank you! Thank you!" She said over and over.
"I'm sure you'd have found it without me." Liman grunted. The girl rushed over and held her hand out for the hat. Liman's eyes followed wistfully at it as he put it in her hands. He watched as she skipped into the mansion holding the hat high. Defeat sunk into Liman as he stared at the large house. He sighed and followed the sloping hill away from the manor.
