351: Using a Handsome Man Strategy
"Alright." Despite Su Hanyan's reluctance to move, she gritted her teeth and stood up. The exam was approaching, and she couldn't afford to slack off.
She needed a degree and a diploma. Having surpassed the age for the regular college entrance exam, she could only participate in the adult college entrance exam, either attending night school or taking correspondence courses.
Regardless of which option she chose, she needed to pass the exam to enroll.
To obtain the diploma and step into a higher level of career opportunities in the future, she had to work hard. Moreover, Jin Chen had come specifically to help her; she couldn't let him down.
It was hot inside the house, so Su Hanyan took her books to the courtyard and started studying history and politics under the lamp. These were not her strong subjects, so she had to work hard to memorize them.
Jin Chen was washing dishes in the kitchen. Hearing her struggling with memorization, he shook his head helplessly.
Twenty minutes later, he came out with a pot of tea and sat beside her. "How's the memorizing going?"
"It's so hard!" Su Hanyan sighed, slumping over the small round table. She felt like a struggling student. "These books are so thick, with countless key points. I'm afraid I won't remember them!"
Jin Chen was puzzled. "Why is your English so good then? That also requires a lot of memorization and reading."
"My English is exceptional!" Su Hanyan grinned. "Maybe because I have a special love for it!"
"History can't be memorized by rote, and the same goes for politics." Jin Chen took the book from her hand, glanced at it briefly, and placed it open on the table. "Su, let me introduce you to a whole new world of history."
Jin Chen began explaining history, talking non-stop for over two hours, covering everything from ancient times to the Western Han Dynasty. He spoke eloquently, like a flowing river.
Su Hanyan listened with great interest, like she was hearing a fascinating story. He interspersed important knowledge points throughout, helping her grasp the key exam topics while enjoying the storytelling.
"That's all for tonight!" Jin Chen said, taking a sip of water. "There are a few days left. I'll continue explaining until we cover everything. Once I'm done, you'll remember the major events, but you'll still need to summarize and memorize the specific years and details. That part, you'll have to do yourself. Understand?"
"Understood!"
"So, what's next for you?"
"Rote memorization." Su Hanyan sighed. "I still have to memorize these things!"
She had chosen science subjects in the past to avoid memorization, but now... fate had its way, and she still had to memorize.
"Memorize them. I'll be listening." Jin Chen said.
"I'm too tired." Su Hanyan glanced at the clock. "It's already past eleven. I'm so sleepy. What should I do?"
"No way. You can't sleep! Have you heard the story of Su Qin tying his hair to the ceiling and Zhang Yi stabbing his thigh to stay awake? If you slack off, I don't mind using those methods to wake you up!" Jin Chen's serious tone was quite intimidating.
"No, you can try a different method," Su Hanyan suggested with a mischievous smile.
"Like what?" He looked at her, his gaze gentle.
"For example, you could use a handsome man strategy to tempt me. If I memorize the content of a dynasty, you could take off a piece of clothing or something..." Su Hanyan teased him.
[lmaooooo]
To her surprise, she received a flick on her forehead, his finger stinging sharply.
"Studying is a serious matter!" Jin Chen said sternly. "The exam is very close. Do you know how many people you'll be competing with and what the acceptance rate is? So, please focus on your studies now."
352: No Sense of Romance
Su Hanyan rubbed her sore head and muttered, "No sense of romance!"
Then, she picked up her book and began to memorize again. When she couldn't remember something, she wrote it down on paper repeatedly.
While she was copying, Jin Chen sat beside her reading a politics textbook, preparing for the next day's lessons. He didn't idle for even a minute.
From time to time, Su Hanyan looked up at him, thinking to herself: Is he a true scholar? Indeed, every impressive person has unique skills.
She didn't know how long she had been memorizing and copying, but eventually, her eyelids grew heavy, and her willpower gave in to her physical needs. She closed her eyes.
When Jin Chen noticed the lack of noise, he looked up to see her resting her head on her hand, fast asleep.
"Yanyan," he called her several times, "Wake up, go sleep inside."
Su Hanyan, half-asleep, waved her hand. "Can't memorize anymore, too sleepy... don't want to move..."
No matter how much he called her after that, she didn't respond.
Jin Chen checked his watch; it was already past 1 a.m. No wonder she was so tired.
He put away the books, bent down, and picked her up, carrying her inside.
Su Hanyan, sensing someone carrying her, slightly opened her eyes. Seeing it was Jin Chen, she closed them again. This small gesture made Jin Chen very happy; it showed she trusted him.
He laid her on the bed, removed her shoes, covered her with a thin blanket, and gazed at her peaceful, sweet sleeping face for a moment. He bent down and gently kissed her lips, then took the key from her pocket and left.
When he left, he locked the door from the outside.
The next morning, he brought breakfast to wake Su Hanyan up and help her start a new day.
During Jin Chen's break, he helped Su Hanyan with her studies almost every day. They had known each other for quite some time, but both were usually busy with work, so this was a rare opportunity to spend time together.
Over these days, their relationship deepened rapidly, entering a passionate phase.
A week later, Jin Chen's vacation ended, and he returned to work at the hospital. His high-intensity job left him no time to help Su Hanyan with her studies, but he had given her a new approach, a method she could follow on her own.
It turned out to be a good strategy.
...
"Dr. Jin, back from vacation? I heard you've been working yourself to the bone to win a lady's smile?" Early in the morning, Lu Feifan plopped onto Jin Chen's desk, teasing him.
"Get lost!" Jin Chen responded with his usual succinctness to his best friend.
"Don't be like that!" Lu Feifan jumped off the desk and gave him a knowing look. "Tell me, how far have you two gone? You've been visiting her every night; have you crossed any boundaries?"
"Do you think everyone is like you?" Jin Chen glanced at him, "It's early morning. Aren't you annoying? Hand me the surgery schedule. How many surgeries do we have today?"
"Not many. A few routine surgeries, nothing risky. We're doing them together!" Lu Feifan gave him a perfect smile. "Old partner, I missed you these past few days!"
"Don't be so cheesy." Jin Chen looked at him with disdain. "You managed just fine without me."
"Fine, yes, but it was a bit lonely." Lu Feifan grinned as he moved closer. "Bribe me, and I'll tell you something."
353: Direct Confrontation
"Just say it directly," Jin Chen responded curtly. "If you don't want to say it, then forget it. There's no way I'll bribe you."
"I figured you'd say that," Lu Feifan glanced at the time and decided to cut to the chase. "While you were away, a woman named Su Chanjuan came looking for you. She said she's Su Hanyan's second sister, and you'd know who she is if she mentioned her name."
Jin Chen was a bit surprised to hear about her visit. "Why did she come?"
"No idea. She didn't say, only that she had something to discuss with you," Lu Feifan speculated. "You're a doctor, so she probably wants you to perform a surgery or get special medical treatment. Can't think of anything else. Didn't she go to Su Hanyan? That's her sister, after all!"
"No, she didn't."
"Then I don't know. She didn't specify her business, but she did say she'd come back once you were at work."
"Got it."
Jin Chen was puzzled as to why Su Chanjuan would come directly to him, bypassing her sister. While he was contemplating this, the nurse at the station called him.
"Dr. Jin, a woman named Su Chanjuan is here to see you! She came once before and now she's back..."
"Send her over."
A moment later, Su Chanjuan found Jin Chen's office.
Seeing this, Lu Feifan immediately said to Jin Chen, "I'll leave you two to talk. Don't forget to check the surgery schedule; the first surgery is in the morning."
With the office getting crowded, Jin Chen directly said to Su Chanjuan, "Let's talk outside."
He led Su Chanjuan to the lawn outside the hospital and asked about her visit. "I heard you were looking for me. What can I help you with?"
Su Chanjuan's face immediately broke into a smile as she tried to bridge the gap between them. "Brother-in-law! Can I call you that? You've already met our parents, so it's practically like an engagement!"
"Call me whatever you want."
"Since you don't mind, I'll get straight to the point!" Su Chanjuan said with a smile. "You see, since we're going to be family, there's no need for formalities! I just want to ask, is there someone named Jin Bin in your family?"
Jin Chen's eyebrows twitched slightly at her question. "Yes, that's my cousin. Are you looking for him?"
"No, no, no," Su Chanjuan waved her hands. "It's like this: my husband is running a small business. He used to partner with a guy named Jiang Lei, who recently opened a restaurant on his own and didn't include my husband. My husband isn't the type to sit idle; he wants to make a name for himself too. But he's just a small fry, hopping around in small ponds."
As she spoke, Jin Chen caught onto her intention.
"So, you want to partner with Jin Bin in business?" he asked.
"Partnering... that's what we have in mind. I heard he's a big boss with a big business! If it were before, we wouldn't dream of approaching him. But now we know you, and you're going to be part of our family! Today, I came to ask if you could help us by introducing my husband to him, maybe get some good business deals or even partner up!"
354: Unable to Help
"I'm afraid I can't help you with that," Jin Chen said without hesitation. "I'm a doctor. I only deal with medical matters, not business. You've come to the wrong person."
Su Chanjuan hadn't expected to hit a wall so quickly. Unwilling to give up, she pressed on, "Brother-in-law, we're family! If you don't help me, you're disrespecting me. Disrespecting me means disrespecting Yanyan. Do you think she'll be happy if I tell her this?"
"Still can't help," Jin Chen repeated.
"Come on!"
Jin Chen glanced at his watch. "I'm sorry, I have a surgery to prepare for. If there's nothing urgent, I need to go."
"Brother-in-law, wait!" Su Chanjuan followed him as he walked towards the building, her words spilling out in desperation. "I'm not asking you to guarantee anything. Just put in a good word for us, show our connection. Doesn't that company have your shares too? Your word should carry weight."
"I don't get involved in their matters."
"Can't you at least speak to him? Come on, brother-in-law!" Su Chanjuan was sweating with anxiety. "If you don't help, I'll tell my parents, and they'll reconsider letting Yanyan marry you. You just want to take my sister away and not help our family, right?"
"That's not it."
"Then why won't you help?"
"Because I simply can't."
"Fine!" Su Chanjuan was exasperated by Jin Chen's indifferent and firm stance. "I'll tell Yanyan, and if she gets mad at you, don't blame me!"
Jin Chen paused and looked at her. "It's not impossible. Go talk to Yanyan. If she asks me herself, then we'll see."
"Is that a promise?"
"Yes, it's a promise."
"Fine! Let's see what Yanyan says then." Su Chanjuan turned and left, determined to talk to Su Hanyan. She couldn't let this golden opportunity slip away.
As soon as Su Chanjuan was out of sight, Lu Feifan appeared, throwing an arm around Jin Chen's shoulders and teasing him. "You've upset your future sister-in-law. Aren't you worried Su Hanyan will be angry with you?"
"Do you know what she did?" Jin Chen asked.
Lu Feifan shook his head. "How would I know?"
"She tried to set Yanyan up with someone else," Jin Chen frowned, clearly displeased. "Just for that, I can't help her."
Lu Feifan was taken aback, then burst into laughter. "So she didn't pick you at first, huh? But now that you've upset her, Su Hanyan might not be happy either. Don't let this affect your relationship."
"It won't." Jin Chen smiled confidently.
"So sure of yourself?"
"Yes."
"Alright then!" Lu Feifan chuckled. "Let's go finalize the surgery plan. You've got a busy few days ahead."
...
In the afternoon, the sun was scorching, and the cicadas were buzzing loudly outside the window.
Su Hanyan rested her chin in her hand, struggling to stay awake. She had stayed up late the night before, and now she was too tired to focus on her reading.
"Yanyan, if you're tired, take a nap," Zhu Lin said, stretching and yawning herself. With exams approaching, they were all cramming and exhausted.
"Yeah, I can't keep my eyes open. I'll sleep for a bit," Su Hanyan gave up fighting her drowsiness, closed her book, and laid her head on the desk to sleep.
355: Sending Her Away
Ring ring—
The telephone on the desk suddenly rang, startling Su Hanyan. She rubbed her eyes and sat up, answering the phone, "Hello, who's this?"
"Hanyan, it's me, your second sister! Come out for a bit, I need to talk to you about something," Su Chanjuan's voice came through the receiver.
Anything related to Su Chanjuan usually meant trouble. Hanyan had been busy and tired lately, and now she was sleepy and didn't want to get involved.
"I'm busy right now," she replied curtly, and with a click, she hung up the phone.
Su Chanjuan hadn't even finished speaking when the line abruptly cut off. She stood there dumbfounded.
"Boss, I'll call her again," she said and dialed the number once more.
The phone rang again, but Su Hanyan didn't want to answer, annoyed by the persistent ringing.
"Hanyan, pick up the phone, this is unbearable!" Zhu Lin also wanted to rest but couldn't sleep well because of the disturbance.
In the office, besides the two of them, there were also Lin Qingyu and Jiang Kuo, engrossed in their storybooks. Hearing the phone, they urged her to answer.
"Hello, what's up?" Su Hanyan asked with her eyes still closed, groggy from sleep.
"Come out, it's a long story..." Su Chanjuan began.
"I can't come out. Make it short," Su Hanyan interrupted.
"You..." Su Chanjuan was irritated by her younger sister's attitude, but what could she do? She needed her help and couldn't afford to be submissive.
"I want Jin Chen to help your brother-in-law with a business deal. It's simple, the big boss your brother-in-law wants to cooperate with is Jin Chen's cousin..."
"Jin Chen won't help you, right?" Su Hanyan cut in, not wanting to listen to her rambling.
"Yes. Can you talk to him..." Su Chanjuan started again.
"I can't help either, that's it," Su Hanyan interrupted again.
With that said, she hung up the phone.
"Hey! That stubborn girl!" Su Chanjuan persisted and called again.
The phone in the publicity department rang again, making everyone in the office explode. Calls in the middle of lunchtime disrupted everyone's rest.
"Cut, cut, cut, cut the phone line," Lin Qingyu shouted.
"No, what if it's a leader?" Su Hanyan rubbed her sleepy eyes, smiled faintly at Lin Qingyu, "Qingyu, you do it, send her away."
"Okay! My words may not sound nice!" Lin Qingyu preemptively warned.
"It's okay. Say whatever you want! I won't get mad!"
"Alright." Lin Qingyu picked up the phone and shouted on the other end, "Are you done? It's lunchtime and you're disturbing our rest! I'm telling you, Su Hanyan isn't here in the office. Stop calling! If you call again, we'll cut the phone line!"
The phone hung up, and Su Chanjuan was left jumping and yelling at the door.
The guard at the front gate had heard the commotion from the phone and said to Su Chanjuan, "Just leave, stop calling. We won't let you through anymore."
The office finally quieted down.
Su Hanyan slept until the afternoon before waking up for work. The first thing she did was call Jin Chen, "Did my sister come looking for you? You handled it well! Remember what I told you, you don't need to worry about our family matters. You can't handle them either. If necessary, I'll talk to you myself."
"I got it," Jin Chen smiled faintly, "I'll listen to Hanyan."
