Officer Ed Wells strolled through the hall of the Rampart police station as police memories slipped through his mind. There were exciting, funny, and sad memories.

One particular time Officer Wells thought up a plan for an undercover assignment. The officers had to use a little girl's bike during the operation. It ended up damaged. Afterwards the little amber-haired girl stopped by the station. Wells looked at her angry face and explained the police department would fix it. She never said a word. She just stared at him with her little sceptical face.

There were so many other times the officers passed around jokes. They laughed with each other. That alone might light up a officer's day or night.

There were times when the officers were in the depths of despair. Sadly, sometimes one of them looses his partner on the job.

Officer Brown had been a good friend. Who was he kidding? He was more than a friend; he had been a member of the family.

Last night. It kept replaying in his mind. They had been called for a 211 silent. Just as soon as they entered they entered the bank, the robber fired a shot at the officers. Brown went down in front of him and that was it he was gone.

He wanted to remember the good ones and not the bad ones. He tried to block them, but some of the bad ones slipped through his mind anyway.

All the events of the night kept reoccurring in his mind. The more he thought about it the more he considered it his fault. Maybe he could've stopped it somehow. Maybe he could have seen it coming.

Officer Malloy broke into his thoughts. Ed didn't know which felt worse: when someone stopped to comfort him or everyone left him alone to stir. Officer Pete Malloy said, "I heard what happened. I'm sorry. I know exactly how you feel. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know Mac wants to see you."

"Alright."
