"This next move is a complicated one, are you sure you're up for it?" Nightheart questioned Sagepaw, her apprentice's eyes burned with a fierce determination.
"Absolutely!" Sagepaw boasted.
"Of course!" Hailpaw chimed in as well.
"This move is best suited for when you've got yourself pinned up against something with nowhere to run." Nightheart began and looked to Dustfall who nodded, preparing himself for Nightheart's demonstration. "Say that I'm fighting Dustfall and I'm backed into a wall." Nightheart looked her shoulder at the pine tree behind her. "Usually you would lash out and try and fight your way out of this, but if you do this right then you can take your attacker by surprise."
Nightheart leapt backwards using her front paws, as her paws hit the surface of the pine tree she used the surface to launch herself forward. Her body hit Dustfall's and his weight gave out, he slammed into the ground and Nightheart pinned him on his belly. "See? Now I've got the advantage."
"Wow!" Sagepaw mewed in awe. "That's so cool! I want to try!" She was incredibly eager to get started, and from the amazement on Hailpaw's eyes, she was too.
"You have to be quick." Dustfall explained. "When you feel your paws it the tree you have to jump off quickly, but with enough force that you'll be able to knock your opponent down. "
"Got it." Sagepaw nodded with determination, and Nightheart felt a surge of admiration for her apprentice. She's so determined. In the two moons that Nightheart had been training Sagepaw she had witnessed a cat with unrelenting resilience. She never gave up when she failed, and she would try over and over until she perfected was she was trying to do. I'm so excited to see her grow even more.
"Sagepaw you try first, you'll take turns." Nightheart and Dustfall cleared the area to give Sagepaw and Hailpaw enough room to practice the move. Sagepaw backed up against the tree, facing her sister. Sagepaw attempted to jump backwards, but fell short of the tree, just bumping her hindquarters on it and falling to the ground. Nightheart withheld a purr of amusement.
Hailpaw stepped up next while Sagepaw prepared to be tackled, Hailpaw's first attempt was similar, with her falling just short of the pine tree. Nightheart and Dustfall continued to give their apprentices advice while they made many attempts.
On Sagepaw's fifth attempt she managed to get her paws on the tree and actually launch herself off, she hit Hailpaw clumsily and the two landed in a tangle of limbs and laughter. "Good job." Hailpaw laughed and took her own next shot. She copied what her sister had done and landed on top of Sagepaw, knocking her to the ground.
"Good job both of you." Dustfall praised. When Sagepaw had first started training, she felt self-conscious of not being able to be as good as Hailpaw but with proper training, the two sisters didn't compete, they learned from each other. If one succeeded while one failed, they would give each other advice on how to improve themselves.
After a few more attempts, Nightheart could see that the apprentices were starting to get exhausted. "We should probably call it a day."
"Nooo." Sagepaw complained. "I still have some of my paws left to lose." She held up her forepaws, they had been scratched and worn down by the rough tree bark. It looked painful, but Sagepaw has such a strong determination on her face. Nightheart was so inspired by Sagepaw, but the apprentice needed her rest.
"Come on," Nightheart flicked her tail of Sagepaw's ears. "You need those paws treated, I know Blackstorm will have something for both of you. Tomorrow we'll work on partner fighting."
"Awesome!" Hailpaw exclaimed and the two of them began racing back to camp.
"I don't know how they do it." Dustfall mewed, exhaustion in his voice. "They train so hard, end up with scraped up paws and still have the energy to race."
"It's amazing really." Nightheart chuckled. "I don't think I had that much energy as an apprentice."
"They'll make amazing warriors when they're ready." Dustfall added.
"I agree." Nightheart purred and the two of them followed their apprentices back to camp.
By the time Nightheart and Dustfall returned to AshClan camp, Sagepaw and Hailpaw had already made their way to Blackstorm's den and were getting their paws treated. Nightheart spotted Rabbitspring sharing prey with Primroseheart in the center of camp. Nightheart felt her heart skip a beat at the sight of her mate. Every time I see her. She thought fondly.
Nightheart and Dustfall approached the two of them. "Welcome back." Rabbitspring purred loudly, it was like honey to Nightheart's ears. Nightheart touched her muzzle to Rabbitspring's and sat down beside her, their tails intertwining.
"How was training?" Primroseheart's eyes shimmered as she looked at Dustfall. These two are as close as ever. Nightheart thought fondly. I expect kits from them soon. She thought and Dustfall sat down beside Primroseheart, their pelts touching.
"Good." Dustfall replied, soothing down his fur. "Those apprentices have more energy than a hare being chased by a MoonClan warrior. Did you see Blackstorm about your bellyache?"
Primroseheart nodded. "He treated it, and I do feel better but I still don't have much of an appetite." She nudged her small mouse. "This is almost too much for me."
"I wonder if you have some kind of bug." Rabbitspring questioned, expressing concern. "You should really be getting some rest."
"I plan on it." Primroseheart took a small bite of her mouse, wrinkling her nose at it. She forcefully swallowed the morsel and stood up. "I think I'll do that now actually." She turned away, making sure to touch her tail to Dustfall's pelt, the tom had the eyes of a love sick dove.
Nightheart and Rabbitspring shared a look and returned to it Dustfall. "What?" Dustfall rasped his tongue across his chest fur in embarassment.
"Nothing." Rabbitspring giggled and finished her prey. "I should get some sleep too."
"I'll meet you there in a bit." Nightheart told her. As Rabbitspring stood up, she ran her tail across Nightheart's flank just as Primroseheart had done. She cast a teasing look at her brother before vanishing into the warrior's den.
"Ha ha very funny." Dustfall snorted.
"I seem to recall you and a few other cats doing the same thing to me and Rabbitspring." Nightheart jagged him lightly with her forepaw. "Though it was your teasing that just us to finally admit what we felt. You should do the same thing."
"I plan on it, soon." Dustfall mewed. "I really care about her, I think she already knows how I feel." He shuffled his paws. "I hope she does anyway."
"I think she does." Nightheart assured him. "She looks at you the way Rabbitspring looks at me. Just stop being such a feather-brain."
Dustfall rolled his eyes mockingly at Nightheart and twitched his tail. Nightheart stood up and started heading towards the warrior's den. "You know, sometimes you don't have to tell someone how you feel. Sometimes, you both just know."
With those final words to Dustfall, Nightheart stepped into the den full of warriors starting to settle down for the night. Nightheart reached the nest right beside Rabbitspring and curled up next to her mate, rasping her tongue over Rabbitspring's ears while the small she-cat purred loudly. Not a day goes by where I'm not happy I told Rabbitspring how I felt. She thought. She has made my life perfect.
