"Where's Crabbe?" Draco asked, just now noticing he was missing. Alexandra looked at him sympathetically, and he knew his friend hadn't made it. He looked at Goyle before pulling Alexandra towards another part of the corridor. "Are you alright? What the hell were you doing in there? What are you doing here?"
"I'm fighting," Alexandra told him. She took his wand out of her pocket, and handed it to him.
"No, keep it," he told her, pushing her hand away. "You deserve it more than I."
"You can't go wandless!"
"I'll snatch one off another Death Eater. Don't worry about me."
Alexandra sighed, putting the wand back in her pocket and holding his hands in her own.
"Thank you for what you did in the Manor," she smiled.
"Stop," Draco sighed, knowing he didn't deserve any kindness from her. He sat and watched while she was tortured for days and nights on end. All he could do was give her an old blanket. "Go fight. Don't wait around for me."
"But you-"
"Don't worry about me," he protested again.
"Stop saying not to worry about you! Of course I worry about you! I love you!" She yelled, throwing her hands down in a fit. She was getting frustrated, waiting so long to be reunited with him only for him to turn her away. She didn't even notice the words that had come out of her mouth.
Draco's face softened. He did nothing to deserve her love, but he welcomed it nevertheless. It was what drove him to make a decision he never thought he could.
He kissed her quickly, for the first time in nine months now, pulling away before running in the opposite direction without saying a word.
"What the hell," she muttered to herself. She hesitated for a moment before ultimately deciding to go find her friends. She was surprised when she found the trio rather quickly, and even more surprised when she saw Ron and Hermione practically on top of each other.
"If you two haven't noticed, there's a war going on!" Harry yelled impatiently, causing the two to pull away from each other.
"Exactly. It's now or never, mate," Ron said proudly, looking at Alexandra as she approached. "Where have you been?"
"Definitely not where you've been," Alexandra stated, causing Hermione to laugh. Loud bangs followed by high screams caused the four friends to look ahead of them where they saw many witches and wizards on either side fighting for their lives. One wizard caught Alexandra's eye as he struggled to keep up with the Death Eaters cornering him.
Without thinking, she quickly ran to help him. Shooting spells left and right, she refused to let anyone get near Fred. It wasn't the spells they had to worry about, though.
"Hello Minister!" Percy yelled from beside Fred as he shot spells toward the sitting Minister of Magic. "Have I mentioned I'm resigning?"
"You're joking!" Fred laughed. "You're actually joking! I don't think I've heard you joke since-"
A loud noise interrupted the conversation, everything moving in slow motion as the wall behind them exploded. Alexandra didn't hesitate, pushing her friend out of the way and landing on top of him as she shielded their heads with her arms. Harry, Hermione and Ron had finally caught up, looking at Alexandra as she laid atop Fred. She picked her head up, panicking when she noticed Fred's eyes were closed and he wasn't moving.
"Fred," she cried, noticing how similar the scene was to the one that haunted her day and night. "Fred!"
Her friends all kneeled beside her and Fred, all equally assuming the worst. It wasn't until his head moved ever so slightly that a loud sigh of relief echoed throughout the group.
"Fred," she stated happily, letting out a sob. For once, something had finally worked in her favor. She defied everything Dumbledore told her, and she changed fate.
"This is a rather pleasant position I'm in," he said weakly, sitting up. Alexandra was quick to throw her arms around him as Harry and Hermione returned to deflecting spells around them. Ron and Percy looked at each other with great relief that their brother was alive before joining Harry and Hermione in making sure he stayed that way. Alexandra and Fred were quick to escape the pile of rubble and join their friends for a short moment before Alexandra realized someone was missing.
"Come with me! I've got to find Ginny!" Alexandra yelled, dragging Fred with her afraid of what might happen if she left him. On their way through the entrance hall, they were met with Draco once again as he struggled against another Death Eater. Alexandra was going to intervene, but Fred beat her to it. Both Alexandra and Draco watched in amusement as the Death Eater fell unconscious, and Draco turned to see who had helped him.
"I don't know what you see in him," Fred scoffed, his wand still pointed towards the man. Alexandra wondered how he could still joke in a time like this, but she admired him for it. He brought light to the darkness.
Draco picked up the Death Eater's wand before standing up and brushing himself off.
"Thanks," he said, nodding to Fred.
"You'd be dead if she didn't like you so much," Fred glared.
"So would you, it looks like," Draco pointed out, noticing how both of them were covered in dirt, blood and small fragments of rocks, Alexandra more than Fred.
"Have you seen Ginny?" Alexandra asked eagerly, not wanting to wait any longer.
"Alex?" A voice echoed as Ginny conveniently joined the three in the entrance hall. She embraced her friend and her brother as Draco watched. He had never truly noticed how close Alexandra was to the Weasleys until now.
"Have you figured out what the key is for?" Ginny asked.
"What?" Alexandra asked.
"The one around your neck. It must have been for something of Dumbledore's if he left it for you, don't you think? I've been thinking about it while I've been stuck in that bloody room. Maybe it leads to something that can help us defeat You-Know-Who."
"I'll take Ginny somewhere safe," Fred said, noticing a new determined look in Alexandra's eyes. "Go change fate."
"I already have," Alexandra smiled, hugging both Weasleys one last time before retreating up the stairs.
"Would you like to join me?" Alexandra asked Draco, noticing he was still standing awkwardly at the top of the stairs. The entire time he's been figuring out a way to tell her he loves her without sounding too revolting, but he's been unsuccessful. He thought that maybe showing her he's on her side would be enough for the moment.
He said nothing, but followed her as she made her way to the Headmaster's Office.
"Dumbledore," he said, having used the password a number of times to meet with Snape throughout the year.
"Thank you," she smiled, grabbing his hand and taking him with her up the spiral staircase. She quickly began looking around the office for something with a lock, but found nothing. All of Dumbledore's belongings were replaced by Snape's, and she felt foolish thinking she would find anything.
"There's a lock on this drawer," Draco pointed out, causing Alexandra to turn her head. She ran to the desk, practically ripping the key off from around her neck and sticking it in the lock. It turned successfully, and the drawer opened to reveal a damaged black book she recognized all too well.
She opened the book, and almost dropped it. Inside was the photograph of her, Harry, Ron and Hermione, but there was a large hole through the middle.
"He kept it. All that time, he kept it," Alexandra stated, turning the book around to show Draco the name inscribed on the back. Draco grabbed the book, flipping quickly through the pages and reading the neat yet rushed handwriting inside.
"He fell in love with you, Alex."
