"Do you know what's going to happen to me and Remus in Risuca?" Logan asked, careful to hide to his injured hand from Patton.

"Uh, no. Sorry, Kiddo, Rose never really tells us anything."

"How do you trust a Captain like that?"

"Because she's saved all our lives at least once." Patton said defensively.

"I did not mean to offend you." Logan said, picking up on Patton's tone. "I apologise."

Patton blew a little breath up through his fringe. "It's fine." He muttered, not looking at Logan. "I really don't know anything, Kiddo, so don't ask."

"How did you know I was-?"

"I'm good at picking up on what people are like." Patton said, smiling. "And it's kinda funny sometimes." He giggled. "Logan? You okay, Kiddo?"

Logan looked up. "Oh. Um, yes, I'm fine. Just thinking."

"Penny for your thoughts?"

Logan shook his head. "I'd rather really not. It's not something you need to be burdened with."

"Okay, Kiddo." Patton opened his sketchbook. "I here, though, if you need to talk."

"Why do you care?" Logan asked. "I mean, I'm going to my death either way. Why are you wasting your energy on me?"

Patton shrugged, thinking. "I think everyone should experience kindness." He said eventually. "Even if they're a mermaid and even if they're going to their death. And it's not a waste of energy, any-how. It's just how I am." He grinned kindly at Logan. "Is that the thing that was on your mind?"

"Uh, no. It just- nevermind."

Patton held Logan's gaze for a few more seconds before looking at the blank page in his sketchbook.

"Am I going to see Remus again?" Logan asked. His voice was very small and it surprised Patton.

"I, uh, I don't know, Kiddo. I don't think so. I'm really sorry, Kiddo."

There was actual sincerity in Patton's voice. Of course, this was to be expected from this human but it still startled Logan a little. Humans had always been horrid, horrid creatures and yet, this one seemed to actually care.

"It's odd." Logan found himself saying. "I've never had to say goodbye to Remus before and now, when I have to for the last time, I won't be able to. It's rather heart-breaking, really."

"I'm so sorry, Kiddo."

"It's fine."

"No, it's not. You're never going to see your soulmate and it's my fault. Mine and everyone else's."

"I didn't mean to worry you, Patton."

Patton nodded. "I know. But you don't need to apologise. This isn't an apologising matter. Not on your part, anyway."

Logan shrugged and hugged his elbows.

"Logan, your hand!" This time, Logan didn't even bother to hide his injuries. "What happened?"

"I tried to get out and soon realised it was rather pointless after the second nail." Logan said candidly.

"What-? Why-? Kiddo-"

"I'm not going to die, Patton." Logan said. "You might as well tell your Captain this, too. I'm not going to die and I don't intend to die any time soon. I'm not going to hurt any of you when I try and escape but I can't promise anything if someone like that Daniel character gets violent."

Patton bit his lip and rubbed his arm. "You know I'm going to have to try and stop you, Kiddo."

Logan nodded. "I'm aware. And I've accepted that." He looked up at Patton. "I think you should try and accept it too."

Here. I don't know what to say about this except it's the sort of angst that, as you write it, you feel evil giggles building up inside of you because it's so fun to write.
Bye,
Blaize
