The phone slipped from Mickey's dainty fingers as she looked outside the dorm window to see an ambulance, and A crowd of students hovering over the scene. She couldn't believe it. Why would he do this to us? Why would he leave me?
She dashed out the door, heading outside hoping to see her brother one last time. All she wanted to see his scruffy hair, and gentle smile and to have him tell her that they were going to see their mother together. She froze abruptly when she saw Archer wrapped in a blanket near the ambulance. He looked hollow, and withdrawn. He was in shock over what he had witnessed.
She turned over to the side to see her brother's body being taken away.
"No," she whispered, "No! Stop! Luke!" Mickey was screaming, how could this have happened? The police held her back, and she struggled to free from their grip.
"That's my brother, let me see him you assholes!" she shouted at them, tears still falling down her face. She stopped struggling, and fell to her knees in defeat. I can't believe it. He's actually gone.
Mickey turned around to face Archer, and crawled towards him. She wrapped her arms around him, wanting to be held and cradled, but he wouldn't budge. He stared, with no emotion lighting his bright green eyes.
"It's all my fault," it was a faint croak, "I'm so sorry, Luke."
Mickey pushed the hair away from his eyes, "What do you mean its all your fault?"
Archer slowly shifted to face Mickey, tears welling up in his eyes.
"Luke told me he was in love with me, but he knew that I just didn't love him that way," he paused, "I rejected him, but he never looked unhappy so why did he, why did he..."
"Luke was in love with you?" Mickey restated, sniffling.
Archer nodded, "I loved Luke just not in a romantic sense, he was a person I could actually talk to without having to hide myself behind a cowardly face. And he did so much for me, but yet I couldn't love him back? Why do I have to be so stupid?"
"No stop, I know that Luke would have been happier to hear you say that than to pretend to love him," Mickey reassured him. Why did Luke never tell her? She surely would have given him up so that her brother could be happy after years of unhappiness. So why, why did he leave her?
Jessie walked towards the grieving couple, with Noah at her side. She couldn't believe it. It was her fault. She told him that he had to give up Archer. Wow, I'm such an idiot. Why did I tell him to give up someone he loved?
She stood in front of them, and you could see the tears that stained her cheek, and her red eyes.
"I fucked up. I'm sorry."
Noah grabbed Jessie's hand.
Mickey's and Archer's eyes widened.
"I never meant for this to happen, I just wanted to see you two happy and yet," she froze, "I ended up making everyone unhappy."
Jessie squeezed Noah's hand.
"I manipulated you all from the start, and played with your feelings until I was satisfied with the result. I'm not a selfless person, I'm a horrible human being. I should've died, not Luke."
Mickey stood up and inched toward Jessie, slapping her in the face with the back of her hand. She was angry, but this was no way to handle it.
"You two faced bitch," she spouted, "Please don't ever say you should die. Because no one deserves to die. But why would you do that to us? Did you pretend to care?"
Jessie shook her head in denial, "I care a lot about you guys, and I just wanted you to be happy but I never expected Luke to be such a big part of the whole thing and sometimes I wonder why do I even do this to people? I just constantly push people together because I know what it feels like to be pushed away."
"And Noah, did you," Mickey hesitated to say it, "Were you pretending this whole time? Did you pretend to actually like being my boyfriend?"
"No, I may not have loved you, but I did care Mickey. I cared for once in my fucking life," Noah said, a bit harsher than he wanted it to be.
Archer simply watched before quietly asking Jessie, "What did you tell him?"
"I told him that he should have given up on you, and learn to love himself."
"Why would you tell him that? Why would you tell him to give up? Why would you fucking do that?" Archer yelled, and Jessie backed away. Noah jumped to her defense.
"He would have killed himself sooner if Jessie hadn't told him that! And it would have been your fault!"
Archer fell onto the ground, "My fault?"
"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" Mickey screamed, "We are all at fault here."
Silence fell over them like a sheet of snow, and they broke away from each other.
And Mickey thought to herself, I hope you're happy Luke. Because over here, no one is.
