Silence.

Darkness was all that surrounded you at that moment. Darkness...and a semblance of sound. What is that?

Tap.

Tap.

Tap tap tap.

Your systems rebooted, waking you up from your unexpected coma. You stared up at the being who awoke you.

It was...a small hatchling. It paled in comparison to your head, but it was still rather headstrong. You picked it up and inspected it.

"Are you in need of assistance?" You gently asked, the hatchling tilting its head at you.

"Hello!" Another voice chirped, louder than yours, coming in between you and the hatchling.

"I am Rozzum unit 7134, but you can call me Roz. I believe you mistook my task for yours. May I retrieve it?"

"Surely!" You replied, handing the chick back to Roz. "I am (R/M) Unit 1462."

Roz takes a second to process the information. "I will call you (R/N)."

You looked up at her unsurely. As you repeated her nickname, it kind of...rolled off the tongue. You stood up as she helped you, examining the hatchling in her hand.

"(R/M) robots are designed to help anyone in need!" You instinctively said, the words already written in your programming.

Roz got excited at this. "Rozzum robots are also designed to help anyone in need!"

You whirred in delight. "May I assist in your task?"

Roz sheltered the hatchling close to her and looked on a bit in skepticism. "I appreciate the offer, but your assistance is not necessary."

You stood there, wondering what you did wrong as you looked at her in confusion.

"Roz! What's taking you so...long," Fink exclaimed as he went to find the robot. He then saw you two were engaged in conversation, and he smirked.

"Oh, off making a new friend, were we?"

"Friend?" You questioned. "What is a...friend?"

"A friend is a companion who feels mutually positive feeling towards you," Roz answered as she looked at you. "Do you want me to teach you what 'friends' are?"

You looked at her, something shifting in your programming. You looked happier than before. "Yes. I would enjoy that."

Roz scanned you as she lit up in different colors.

"New task acquired: develop friendship."

A while later...

"(R/N), (R/N)! Will you teach me to cook someday like you?" Brightbill asked as he looked at you.

"I am...unsure that is safe for you, Brightbill. I would have to consult your mother."

"Okay!" He exclaimed as he ran circles around you. He then saw Roz and waddled over to her.

"Roz, Roz! (R/N) said we should ask you if I can cook like her!" Brightbill chirped.

"That's far too dangerous," Roz gently cautioned. "Did you agree to this?"

"Negative!" You quickly assured. "I only told him we should consult you."

"Are you two gonna divorce? Because I don't want to have to take care of Brightbill when that happens," Fink joked.

"What is...a divorce?" You asked, and Roz quickly shut the conversation down.

"What are you talking about, Fink? We are not married. We are just friends." As she said that though, deep inside her, she felt a little pang in her chest, a pain that said she wanted otherwise.

The fox shook his head. "Mmmm, doesn't seem like that to me. Just look at how you're both taking care of Brightbill!"

"You are helping take care of him too. It is not special," you replied, refusing to look at Roz as you said that. The other robot looked down dejectedly.

"Roz! It's getting dark..." Brightbill muttered as he got closer to his motherly figure, nuzzling up to her for comfort. She looked up to the sky at this.

"Indeed. We should go inside," she answered, voice blank and unfeeling now.

"Yeesh..." Fink mumbled as the tension subsided, you looking over to him and then Roz as she stepped inside of the house you made.

You walked away, staying near the house, plucking the dirt for food.

"What are you doing?" Roz asked, popping her head out of the wooden den.

"Aiding your task," you simply answered.

"Come inside. There is a 87% risk of potential danger," she warned.

"Bill needs food. I am getting it. I can take care of myself," you retorted.

"(R/N). Please. I am worried."

"You...cannot feel," you uttered as you looked up at her, confusion in your steely eyes.

"I feel worried," she repeated, contradicting your words.

"I do not want a divorce," you finally said, a little louder than you wanted to, standing up with the worms for Brightbill in hand. Roz looked at you in surprise.

"I...do not listen to Fink. I won't have anyone to aid in my task if you are gone."

You both stood there, staring at each other for a long period of time. Roz lit up yellow as she gazed on, worry consuming her.

Suddenly, she extended her arm to hold your free hand, her eyes narrowing in a pleading expression. You short-circuted for a second, walking towards her as she pulled you in.

"It's warm inside. I started the fire a while ago," Roz said, breaking the silence.

"I would like warmth," you replied as you finally walked inside.

A few short months later...

"Do you know what love is, (R/N)?" Roz asked.

"It is...a human emotion. Of glee towards someone," you guessed.

"It's much more than that. It's something you thrive on, something you fight for. Something that every human needs to survive, even if they may not admit it. It is something I feel strongly, now that I've...learned to feel," Roz explained.

"You feel...love? For what?" You inquired.

"Brightbill. I...have watched him grow. He has helped me see what I previously couldn't."

"You...overwrote your programming," you uttered in awe.

"And you are overwriting yours. I can tell. You are like me."

"You...believe so?"

"Affirmative," she replied, looking off into the sunset.

"Are we...friends yet? Did I help you complete your task?" You hesitantly voiced, looking at her.

"Yes. My task is complete. But...I believe we may be...more. If you feel the same way," Roz replied.

"If I feel...love towards you?" You answered, uttering the word neither of you were brave enough to say.

"Yes."

"I...do. I do feel love towards you," you realized, looking over at her. Suddenly everything was so clear. Suddenly...you were brand new. Roz looked back to you as she glowed pink, holding your robotic hand in hers.

"You've found how to feel," she pointed out, gazing at you fondly.

"I have. Thank you," you replied as you held both of her hands.

You two got closer as you sat by the sunset, holding hands and laying your heads on each other's. Brightbill walked in on the moment and squeezed between you two. You each took your turns patting him on the head.

"I love you, (R/N)."

"I love you, too."
