"I also signed you up for AP classes at Forks High."
Tama's smile dropped then, the girl looking over at her mother with a frown. "You did? When?"
Mitena's smile never left her face, "I just came back, Charlie told me to meet him here so he could tell me the good news. Isn't it great? You'll have college credit before you even graduate! You might even get your degree at the same time if you work hard enough."
Charlie held his tongue, knowing it would do no good. Mitena loved her daughter dearly, and she knew she had a bright future ahead of her, she had seen it. But, she had a tendency to take Tama's education a bit too far. Whenever anyone brought that to her attention however, they were met with denial and the conversation steered in a different direction. "Why didn't you ask me?"
Mitena's smile wavered, the woman laughing nervously as the conversation took a turn. "Well, I didn't think I had to. You'll only be going three days out of the week anyways, the other two you can spend with your friends at school."
Tama fumed in her seat. She still hadn't gotten over the fact that her mother had lied to her weeks earlier, the two having got into a screaming match over it that lasted approximately three days, the last day ending with Mitena buying her daughter a car to try and mend the issue. It did somewhat but, now she was playing with fire. It was bad enough that Tama had no classes with her friends and now, she was being told that she'd only see them at school twice a week. Her weekends were filled with shifts at the cafe and when she wasn't working, she was studying. Two things she grew tired of quickly. Exhaling loudly, Tama stood up quickly, Seth following suit as he stared between his friend and her mother cautiously. The girl stormed off, headed towards her room, her younger friend in tow.
Mitena looked over to Charlie for help, a worried glance on her face. The man shrugged, receiving a scoff in return before Mitena left his side to follow after her daughter. "Sweetheart, wait. I only want what's best for you, and I know you do too. Don't you want to get into a good college?"
Tama didn't stop to listen, the conversation one they had already had too many times to count. She slammed the door once Seth had entered behind her, the boy wincing at the sound before carefully making his way over to her bed. Tama let out an annoyed huff, throwing herself onto the bed next to him, scowling at the ceiling.
They sat like that, in an uncomfortable and tense silence for what seemed like hours but in reality was only twenty minutes. Tama tried to calm herself, ignoring the sound of thunder outside of the window, knowing rain was soon to follow. Just as a thought entered Tama's mind, it seemed to happen, lightning striking so close to the house, the pair jumped in shock, Tama sitting upright then. She glanced around, trying to convince herself that her first thought was wrong.
"So..." Seth trailed off awkwardly as he messed with the strings that were coming undone on the hem of his t-shirt, gaining Tama's attention. "Does this mean I'm not getting beignets?"
