Mike's eyes darted towards the broken pipe, then up to a light bulb above, his gaze shifting between the two with a dawning idea. Sam noticed it too, her head tilting in subtle agreement.
As the fight continued, Hannah's Wendigo tore into the other creature with an almost feral strength, slamming it to the floor before her claws found its neck, ending the struggle with a swift decapitation. The movement of Sam's foot set off a creak in the floorboards.
Hannah Wendigo's head whipped towards her.
As the Wendigo advanced, Mike inched towards the light bulb, his hand hovering over it. He clenched his jaw, took a breath, and crushed the bulb in his hand.
Ashley took her chance, slipping out the door and into the night, while Emily hesitated, backing up as the Wendigo loomed closer towards her.
''Hey!'' I shoutede. The Wendigo turned, its monstrous gaze settling on me, and Emily met my eyes with a look of gratitude, a slight nod, before she too fled, escaping the lodge.
The Wendigo let out a guttural screech as it faced me, but thenโjust as quicklyโit turned, seeming to lose interest as it sensed movement elsewhere. I slipped to the side, pressing against the wall.
One by one, Chris, then Mike, and Sam all moved towards the exit, Sam giving me a nod before slipping outside. The chaos resumed inside as Hannah Wendigo clashed with another one of the monsters, the lodge ringing with their terrifying screams.
This was my moment. I took a deep, shaky breath, feeling the adrenaline flooding my veins, and sprinted towards the light switch. The Wendigo caught sight of me, its scream ripping through the air as it lunged forward, but I reached the switch first, flipping it with every remaining strength I had.
In an instant, the gas ignited, and the lodge erupted into flames, the force of the explosion propelling me forward and I was hurled out onto the cold snow.
My ears rang as I struggled to breathe, the world was a dizzying blur until I felt hands under my arms, pulling me up. Emily and Sam both gave me a nod before they steadied me.
We turned, all of us staring back at the burning lodge, flames licking at the sky. The orange glow reflected in our eyes, staring into consuming fire that signalled an end, or perhaps, a bitter new beginning. But as I watched the flames, a part of me felt hollow, knowing that somewhere in those dark mines, Josh was still there.
One way or another, I'd come back for him. Even if it was only to bring back his body, I wasn't leaving him behind.
