Sliding into the driver's seat, he tossed his keys into the cupholder but didn't start the engine right away. He glanced back at Ana, who was still standing outside, her arms crossed tightly over her chest again. She was scanning the parking lot one last time.

The buzzing in her head had begun to fade, retreating like the tide pulling back from the share, but it left an unsettling stillness in its wake. Finally, she got into the car, sitting back with her arms crossed as she stared out the window.

But Ana's unease lingered. She could still feel the faint echo of that threadβ€”fragile, electric, deliberateβ€”thrumming out there in the dark. Someone was working magic. Something big.

And Jeremy pulled the car out into the road, she couldn't shake the sinking feeling that whatever it was, they weren't going to like what they found when it finally revealed itself.
