How I Became A Killer

Panic killed the small glimmer of hope I had in my heart as his footsteps slowly creeped up our stairs. Memories of the to many to be counted times, we had been through this, crawled around my mind.
I remembered when I was only a 6 year old boy not able to fall asleep because the smallest sound made me think he was coming, and that thought sent fear into me. Followed by a prickle of goosebumps and a sense of unease.
And now everything was happening too fast. He was standing besides mother breathing heavily, I swear I could hear him gritting his teeth. He was the only one in the room with his eyes opened. I guess we thought  if he thought we were asleep he'd leave and not cause disruption.
You know how it is, if the bare sees you dead he'll leave you alone. That's what we were doing. Playing dead.
