"We always have the North Star, M&M," Elijah reminded her. "It shines bright, just like you do. No matter where I am, I can follow that star, and it'll lead me to you."
"That's not how the North Star works."
"It does when the person I'm looking for shines brighter than the stars."

She'd grown up to the sounds of screaming, objects being thrown, and the slamming of the front door at the house next to her own. Madeline's home was his haven away from his own personal hell. But at the age of eighteen, Elijah packed was little he had, said goodbye to her in the middle of the night, and drove away from their quiet town.
Years have passed. Madeline is no longer that nine-year-old child who'd watched him drive away, yet her heart never allowed the pain of losing him to fade. There was no forgetting her babysitter, her best friend, the boy next door. Not a single clear night has passed without her searching for that North Star, wondering if he'd looked up that same night and thought of her.
Wishes were powerful things. The first time Madeline allowed herself to wish for his return, her wish came true.
