The Baudelaire family lives in a large mansion in the center of a busy city. The family is happy until the day the mansion burns down with the parents inside it. The Baudelaire children, now orphans, aren't so happy anymore. They are placed in the care of a careless banker, who, in accordance with the Baudelaire parents' will, sends them to live with two separate, but equally unknown, relatives - in between two locations not listed in the will.
No matter if the location is in their parents' wishes or not, the Baudelaires are pursued by villainous actor and active villain, Count Olaf. With the assistance of his horrid henchpeople, Count Olaf tries to get his rarely washed hands on the enormous fortune the Baudelaire parents left behind for their children through a manner of nefarious plots, including kidnapping, disguises, trickery, hypnotism, murder, and, most terrible of all, badly done theatre.
