Her mother was a bit of an adventurous youth (supposedly) from Otherworld. In her dimension, fates were determined by stars. Constellations, horoscopes, star signs-these things that people on Homeworld wrote off as pseudo-science was our reality. A reality far too cruel for her. As her mother went into labor with her second child, her father cradled his wife. He raced to the nearest light portal. But it was too late. Or, perhaps, too early. The moment they stepped foot into the dimension between dimensions, The Sky of Nothingness, The Realm of Darkness that bridged their two dimensions, her mother still gripping the light crystal fast in her hands-the baby's head crowned. And thus, she was the Girl Born Without Time.They weaved a necklace made from gold and silver, and for the charms, strung on pure, carved birthstones of every kind. Neil lay in the window sill, betting on raindrop races. He didn't have any actual money but he did have the lint in his pockets to bet on the left raindrop making it into the second pane of glass before the right one. Come on. The right raindrop won. This was his favorite part of rainy days. He shifted around,antsy, before he pulled out a Rice Krispies treat from his sweatshirt pocket. Sky blue cellophane reflected onto his tan fingertips from the light grey clouds. He ripped the treat open, then in half and ate the half in his left hand. He set the other half back into the wrapper. He wanted to get hurt. He wanted to see the nurse with the eyes. Fluorescent lights made Neil look ghastly, but everyone was a ghost at Griffin Hospital. He was slowly slipping into himself, his own raindrop race, from a hit to his head. The left tackle was a bull and Neil was wearing red, the school colors. An hour later, Neil woke up to see his young nurse standing over him. She probed him, quietly. A needle was in Neil's left arm, taking his blood, before she attached a clear fluid bag to his IV. Maybe she was changing his blood from red to blue. Maybe, he thought, she was lowering his hemoglobin count to make her white skin tan like his. Neil knew she wanted: she was weakening him to inhabit his body. She wanted to be inside his brain, to take his rainy days away. Her eyes were a gray sky, stormy, and when she sat down in a chair, light cirrus clouds meshed with darker cumulus. He saw her pupils dilate, "I'm sorry if I hurt you." she said. She watched his chest rise and falls as tears welled in her eyes. Silently, Neil watched teardrop races, betting his Jell-O cup that the right tear would rush down her cheek faster than the left. Her cloudy eyes grew darker and his hands started to shake. She took his pulse, her pale fingertips on his warm skin. Neil saw his eyes in her stethoscope.…
