In a great stoic metaphor, we are like dogs leashed to a chariot. We can choose to run along with it or be dragged by it. Helmholtz in Brave New World, when asked where he'd like to be exiled to, says he would prefer a desolate place with miserable weather. He thinks one would be more capable of writing where the air is miserable. I think I would be a very unhappy and unpleasant writer, but I keep being reminded that it's most of what I've got and probably what I'll be doing. Writing comes up against many mental barriers, so I've come to adopt a practice of writing exercises. Sometimes they're like journals, and sometimes they're like debates, and sometimes they're the seeds of a poem. This book contains those seeds.Writing should be conscious of its own limits. Spending an hour picking out the right word is a way to direct a piece closer to truth, but I think there might be a better path to arrive at truth--a path that first involves saying some things that might not be true. I want to call forth the rivers in my mind, point them in a direction, and see where they go. But letting these torrents go can be dangerous. Plowing forward in one hypothetical direction can cause missteps, can lead to dishonest words, and can spitball conclusions that the writer himself doesn't believe. This is an exercise in precision and realization. Every time I say something I don't believe, it will be because I'm trying to get closer to something that I don't know. Every time I write on something I don't really know, it will be because I want to understand what I have to say about it.This book takes the position that speech is powerful but dangerous.
