Masyarakat jawa dulu menganggap bahwa rumah joglo tidak boleh dimiliki oleh sembarang orang, oleh orang kebanyakan, tapi hanya diperkenankan bagi kaum bangsawan, raja, dan pangeran, serta mereka yang terhormat dan terpandang.
