These were the final, and very violent, days of World War II - but the carnage was far from over.As the Battle of Berlin raged during the final major offensive of World War II the Red Army advanced through the city, forced to fight house-by-house and street-by-street. The relentless hoard of Russian troops swept stubbornly forward, heading for the centre of town; heading for Hitler’s chancellery. As May approached the Third Reich found itself seriously depleted, but they were far from finished. Hell rained down across the entire city of Berlin.Late April: A few friends, a one winged angel and the lootAn independent unit of enterprising British squaddies was alone on the outskirts of the small, bombed out and virtually abandoned town of Falkenberg lying just to the northeast of Berlin. Officially these soldiers should have remained with their own outfit, in their own lines, but that was some sixty miles away. This small group of long time friends could see no profit in simply waiting for the war to end along with the rest of the Allied forces. Here, though isolated and alone, they may just be able to turn over a few quid. But, in order to profit from the carnage, they would first have to collect their loot and then return to their own lines - alive. And this was unfriendly territory, very unfriendly indeed.…
