As we all walked on the strip of land towards the Cornucopia, Katniss explained, "This entire arena seems to be laid out like a clock with a new threat every hour, but they stay only within their wedge."
"That makes sense." I said.
"It all starts with the lightning. Then the blood rain, fog, monkeys. That's the first four hours. At 10 the big wave hits over there."
"Wiress, you're a genius." Finnick said.
We reached the Cornucopia and I grabbed a silver bow and a set of arrows, a spear and a few knives which I slipped into the holes of my belt.
"Look, the tail points to 12." Peeta said.
"That's where the lightning strikes at noon and midnight."
"Strikes where?" Beetee asked, squinting at the wedge.
"That big tree." Katniss pointed out.
Meanwhile, Wiress, satisfied that someone understood what she meant by 'Tick Tock', started to recite, "Hickory, dickory, dock. The mouse ran up the clock. The clock struck one the mouse ran down, Hickory dickory dock."
The rest of us assembled around Peeta, who drew the map of the arena in the sand. "So 12 to 1, lightning. Then 1 to 2 is blood. Then fog. And then the monkeys."
"10 to 11 is the wave. What about everything else? Did you guys see anything?" Katniss asked Johanna.
"Nothing but blood." She replied.
"It doesn't matter. As long as we stay clear of whichever sector is active, we'll be safe." I said.
"Yeah, relatively speaking." Finnick said.
A sudden gasp was heard and we snapped our heads towards Wiress. A dripping-wet Gloss let Wiress slide to the ground, her throat slit open. A canon fired as my eyes widened with horror. Katniss, fueled with anger, shot Gloss with her arrow. Another canon blast was heard.
Cashmere tried to sneak up on Katniss, but Johanna pushed the latter aside and swung her axe at the enemy from district 1. Cashmere dodged and was about to strike at Johanna with her knife, when I threw my spear and it pierced right through her chest.
The canon fired.
I turned around to see Finnick fighting off Brutus with his trident. Enobaria came up behind Brutus and flung a knife at Finnick, cutting his arm. I sneered and aimed an arrow at her, but as soon as I let it fly, she ducked behind the Cornucopia. The two tributes from district 2, knowing they were outnumbered, slipped away. Peeta tried to run after them, but Finnick held him back with his good arm. Katniss raised her bow and arrow and followed them.
"Katniss!" Johanna exclaimed and ran after her. Suddenly the ground jerked beneath my feet and the circle of land that held the Cornucopia started to spin fast. I fell down on the rocky surface with a grunt and my fingers barely managed to hold onto a protruding rock.
I looked towards my left, and saw Johanna grabbing onto Katniss, while Finnick shielded Beetee from weapons and crates that flew out of the Cornucopia. I heard a strangled yell from my left and saw Peeta trying to get a good grip onto the stones, his fingers almost giving up. I reached towards his hand and grabbed hold of his wrist.
A wave washed over us, causing Peeta to completely lose his grip, and all his weight fell upon my arm. I let out a wince as I was yanked down. My fingers burned, but I didn't let go of either Peeta nor the rock. My face contoured in pain as my arms begged for relief. All of a sudden, the spinning slowed down and we came to a halt.
Peeta stood up and lifted me up from the ground. He let go once I was stable on my feet. "Thank you, (Y/n)."
I gave a small smile and replied, "Consider it a token of gratitude for saving my life."
He smiled in return before looking towards Katniss, who had been thrown into the sea due to the spinning. Johanna helped her out of the water and Katniss was coughing and gasping for air.
Peeta rubbed her back in soothing manner. "Are you okay?", he asked, his eyes filled with concern.
She nodded and gave a thumbs us, still coughing.
With a huff, Johanna said, "Let's just get what we need and get off the bloody island."
