"Maybe if you didn't move and kept your mouth shut!" Fishlegs snapped.
"What do we do?" Arrow asked.
"Maybe we can put him back to sleep." Hiccup said. He grabbed the arrow in Tuff's helmet and loaded it into his crossbow. He fired it, but it dodged and the other two woke up as well. They began to dig into the snow.
"Okay, so that didn't work. Burrowing! That's new." Hiccup commented.
"I know. And I don't think I like it." Fishlegs said.
"Oh, I know I don't like it." Snotlout added.
"Quick! Defensive formation! Everybody, take an angle, fire as soon as you see them." Hiccup ordered. You all got into a circle and you pulled out your weapons, ready for a fight if need be.
"Feels like they're going left. No, right. Left. Which one's which?" Snotlout asked as the vibrations on the ground grew. You stilled, closing your eyes and breathing in and out slowly. Focus.
"Forget that! Just cover your zone!" Hiccup said. Focus... You repeated. You felt the sensations through your feet as they traveled up your body. Your eyes opened and you quickly shouted to Hiccup.
"Hiccup! They're at your side!"
"Just stun em', bud." Hiccup told Toothless. The dragon fired as the Snow Wraith showed itself and he stunned him. The other two grabbed the third and dove back into the tunnel.
"Anybody feel anything?" Arrow asked.
"Just a profound sense of relief," Tuff said.
"And perhaps a tinge of sadness?" Ruff added.
"Oh, exactly, sister."
"I think they're gone," Fishlegs said.
"Maybe they tunneled all the way out. If they did..." Hiccup began.
"That could be our way out too." You finished. Then, you all heard a distressed roar from one of the Snow Wraiths. Hiccup's eyes widened.
"The Hunters! Let's go." He led the way with you right behind him.
"Come on, girl!" You told Nightshade. She hurried forward, right behind Toothless. The others got a little tangled up, but they were alright overall. You heard a roar again.
"Follow me!" Hiccup said, leading the way out. You saw cages and arrows scattered about. You frowned, knowing they'd been taken. "Ryker knew about the burrowing the whole time. He used us to flush the Snow Wraiths out. Then he captured them."
"Looks like they're headed back to their ship along the south side of the glacier," Arrow said, looking at the footprints.
"They're not gonna get there." Hiccup replied.
"Great time for the snow to let up," Arrow commented as you all hurried to get back to the hunters' ship.
"Okay, we can't get too close. We need to stay out of the range of their arrows." Fishlegs said as you spotted them. Hiccup spotted an overhang above the hunters.
"Maybe we don't need to. Ruff, Tuff, see that ice sheet up there?" He said.
"Please say avalanche. Please say avalanche." Tuff prayed.
"We need an avalanche!" Hiccup told them.
"Our specialty!" Ruff cheered.
"Yes! Positive thinking works!" Tuff said as the gladly flew over to it and fired. The ice and snow began to fall. They all scrambled out of the way.
"You guys get the Snow Wraiths out of here! I'll deal with Ryker." Hiccup ordered. You all hurried to get the Snow Wraiths. "Ryker! Looks like you're in the tough spot this time." Hiccup said. Heather suddenly swooped in. "I would take another count of your riders, Hiccup! Fire!" He ordered Heather. She had Windsheer fire a shot above you. You looked up and felt your heart skip a beat. There was another overhang...directly above you.
"Nightshade, look out!" You said. She tried to dodge, but she was hit. She roared in pain as you both fell. Toothless quickly caught Nightshade and she steadied herself, but Hiccup called out for you.
"(Y/N)!" You saw the terror in his eyes.
"HICCU-" Your scream was cut off as you felt your back hit a large piece of protruding ice. You felt something crack and your lungs felt like they had just had the air punched out of them. You let out a violent cough, hacking up some blood as well, evident by the warm and salty taste entering your mouth. You went limp and you felt another crack as your side hit the ice-cold and hard ground. You heard a loud scream, but it sounded fuzzy and distant along with two roars that also sounded greatly distressed. Your vision faded in and out as you saw somebody land and quickly run toward you. Then, the world went black.
Hiccup's POV
I rushed over to her. I picked her up and held her for a moment. My heart was beating a million miles an hour.
"(Y/n)!? Oh gods, no! (Y/n)! Please, answer me! Wake up!" I begged. I heard a laugh. I saw Ryker and Heather on Windsheer above me. Nightshade roared at them in outrage. I felt my blood boil despite how cold it was on the island.
"YOU WON'T GET AWAY WITH THIS, RYKER! YOU HEAR ME!?" I shouted in rage. The two began to flee.
"Sorry, Hiccup, but we gotta go!" Heather said and they hurried to get away from us. I quickly left (Y/n) with Nightshade and got on Toothless. I wasn't letting them escape. Not this time. He fired arrows at us, but Toothless dodged all of them.
"Nice flying, bud! Now, it's our turn." I wanted to take them out. This is for (Y/n). Toothless got ready to fire, but suddenly, Stormfly and Arrow came up out of nowhere. "Arrow, look out!" I shouted and kept following them. Toothless got ready again, but Arrow called out to us.
"Hiccup, no! Heather is with us!" I pulled Toothless back and he missed the shot. I turned.
"What did you just say?" He looked guilty. I couldn't believe it.
"Get back to the others! (Y/n) needs to get back to the Edge, now! We'll deal with this topic later." I said. I didn't care if I was being harsh. He decided to tell me this now!? After (Y/n) is almost killed!? How could he keep this from me!?
"Hiccup, wait! I'm sorry! I didn't mean for-"
"NOW, Arrow!" I shouted. He looked shocked, but said nothing more and hurried back to the others. I hovered with Toothless for a moment, anger surging through me. He lied to all of us. Toothless roared at me a little, clearly worried.
"Come on, bud. (Y/n) needs us." I said.
We hurried back to where we left her and Nightshade. I picked her up carefully and I held her close to me the entire way back to the Edge. The others went off without me to relocate the Snow Wraiths. Nightshade followed closely beside Toothless, grumbling and growling worriedly as she stared at (Y/n) in my arms. "I know, girl. I'm worried too." I told her. I felt guilt sink in. "H-how could I let this happen?" Toothless churred at me as if to reassure me that it wasn't my fault. "Thanks, bud. I just hope she'll be alright, for all of our sakes."
Once we made it back to the Edge, I rushed her into her hut and quickly began to do everything I could to patch her up. I put wood in the fire pit and told Toothless to light it. I grabbed some medical supplies that she kept and I looked over her injuries. Mostly, it was just a huge bruise on her back and the right side of her torso. I knew she wouldn't have blacked out from a fall like that if she hadn't have hit her head. I put a cold washrag on her forehead to ice it a bit. I also laid one under her back, this one has actual ice spread out on it. I gave her something for the pain too. I sent a Terror Mail to Berk for Gothi and Gobber, telling them (Y/n) was gravely injured and it was an emergency. It flew off and I hoped it would get there fast.
After that, I knelt there. I took her hand, knelt there, and I watched over her. I bowed my head and began to pray. I was so worried, so desperate. I just had to keep her alive. She was my all, though I'd never admitted it to anybody else as we currently weren't actually a thing, but Thor almighty I wished I had told her now. I didn't want her to leave me. Not without her knowing at the very very least. "Gods, if you can hear me, please, heal my friend. She's important. She's so important to all of us. She means everything to me and I assure you she's worth saving. Spare her, I beg you. We need her here. I need her here." I said, trying not to let the emotion show through. I was nearly crying. I had never been so scared in my life.
(Y/n) and I had come out of a lot of things worse for ware before, but nothing like that. Nothing where one of us took a hit that hard. The only time I could think of that was like that was when I lost my leg. I had been out for a long time then, but...I didn't care about myself. I vowed to protect her no matter what. A lost leg is nothing compared to what she just went through. That bruise wasn't purple, it was black. She took a hard hit. It was a miracle she was still breathing. Even I knew that much.
I stayed there until I heard a roar outside. I knew the others were back. I sighed heavily. I stood up and turned toward the door. "Nightshade, watch over her. Alert me if anything, and I mean anything, happens. Got it?" She barked and sat down, sitting proud and tall. "Good girl. I'll be back to stay the night. Come on, Toothless." I said, beckoning him with me. "Arrow has a lot of explaining to do."
I walked into our main place with Toothless beside me. Everyone was there and Arrow still looked guilty. I crossed my arms and he began to talk.
"Heather pretended to join Dagur to get close to him to avenge her family. When she found out about his alliance with the Dragon Hunters, she decided to get closer to him to find out more." Arrow explained.
"But when Ryker captured us on his ship, you and Heather were fighting all the time." Ruff pointed out.
"That's what we wanted people to think," Arrow replied.
"Heather's not evil? There goes that dream." Snotlout said.
"Oh, I knew she was good at heart," Fishlegs said. He was probably the only one who was pleased about this.
"Hiccup, would you say something? Please?" Arrow asked. Toothless nudged my hand. I was deep in thought. I felt so...betrayed. My hand curled into a fist.
"We're supposed to be a team, Arrow," I said, refusing to look at him.
"I know. I-I should've told you. I wanted to. I really did." Arrow said, trying to explain himself. I wasn't letting him off that easy.
"But you didn't. You said nothing and look at (Y/n). She could've died, Arrow. I don't even know if she has a chance."
"I'm sorry. But without Heather, the Dragon Hunters would have a key to the Dragon Eye right now and those Snow Wraiths would not be safely hidden on another island." Arrow said. Honestly? That didn't matter to me anymore. (Y/n)'s life isn't worth that win.
"Still doesn't explain why you wouldn't let me take her and Ryker down. We could have captured the head of the Dragon Hunters." I said.
"Hiccup, Ryker isn't the head of the Dragon Hunters. According to Heather, their real leader is somebody named Viggo Grimborn." Arrow replied. I was surprised by this, but it only angered me more. More information that I needed to know. Great.
"Awesome name. Scary, but awesome." Ruffnut said.
"I don't know. Viggo Grimdeath would be cooler. Or how about Gore Grimskull. Grimskull!" Tuff replied.
"He lives in the shadows. Everyone's afraid of him, even Ryker. Heather hasn't met him yet, but she's our best shot at drawing him out." Arrow replied.
"Well, I hope she knows what she's doing. For all our sake. And if Heather comes that close to hurting any of us again...I don't know how trustworthy she actually is." I said.
"She didn't mean to do that to (Y/n), I know it! She just had no choice." Arrow said. I still wasn't pleased with his answer.
"What's more important, Arrow? Her life? Or your secrets?" I asked. He looked even more guilty.
"I...I didn't want this to happen, Hiccup."
"But it did. All of this happened because you lied to us. You lied to me." He was silent for a moment.
"I'm so sorry." I turned to the others.
"It's late, Gang. We should all get some sleep. Arrow," I said. He looked at me, nervous, yet hopeful too. "You're on watch. I sent a Terror Mail to Berk for Gothi and Gobber. If they get here, you get me right away. Got it?" He frowned. He looked down and nodded silently. I turned and began to head out.
"I'll be in (Y/n)'s hut if anybody needs me," I said and left with Toothless beside me.
I walked into the hut and headed upstairs to where (Y/n)'s room was. Toothless followed close behind me. I was glad (Y/n) had made her hut so roomy.
When we got up there I saw Nightshade resting her head next to (Y/n)'s hand. I frowned. I sat down next to the tall slender Armor Blade as Toothless laid down on my other side. I pet her neck and leaned against her.
"I know how you feel, girl," I said. Her eyes drifted over to meet mine, a sad whine leaving her mouth. "I really do."
