oikawa tooru had been surprised to see his high school girlfriend with his more recent hookup when the duo walked into the bar.

"hi tooru", the girls waved, attracting an insane amount of glances because they were too gorgeous to miss.

"how is...", oikawa pointed between the two of them, "this feels like a crossover of my life or something- i don't know how to explain"

cami walked upto him and hugged him before placing a kiss on his cheek. mio did the same and he smiled at both of them.

"surprised?", mio asked, flashing him a smile.

"scared", oikawa chuckled, looking over to cami and then back to mio, "this is unexpected"

cami assumed that oikawa and mio had things to catch up on so she took herself out of the equation, walking off to greet other people that she recognised.

oikawa had not anticipated that there would be any more surprises to the night.

he spoke to mio for an hour and a half. their lives weren't very similar anymore but oikawa thought it was better to talk to someone that he knew rather than buzz around from group to group making painful small talk with people that knew him but he found alien.

about thirty minutes into their conversation, he realised mio was flirting with him. her eyes would linger on his lips when he spoke and she would lean into him far too often for him to miss.

he continued the conversation though, trying his best to not give her the wrong idea. in the middle, he began to speak about y/n but mio gave him a murderous look so they shifted the topic immediately.

but when she led him away from the crowd... god, he should've known better.

"mio", he finally said when they were hanging around outside the building

"i missed you", she whispered.

the conversation after that felt like a blur until he heard her voice. y/n, oh my god, his y/n.

was it her or was he fucking hallucinating again?

he was struggling to process it as her and mio got into some sort of argument.

"why? you can disregard our friendship whenever it's convenient for you!!", mio yelled

"suddenly we're friends whenever it's convenient for you?", y/n yelled back, "seriously mio you have got to get over high school"

"you're talking to me about getting over things?", mio laughed, "you have been obsessed with one guy since forever and you shifted countries for him. you're the fucking pathetic one"

"you did what?", oikawa questioned, eyebrows raised.

"you knew i was in buenos aires", y/n glared at her with accusation in her eyes, "you were there when i told the others."

"so what if i knew?", mio scoffed, "i haven't followed you here. we have an actual job."

cami sighed, "babe, i don't wanna be mean but don't group me in with you. i get paid forty times more-"

"y/n, can i punch miss cassie over here?", akamine tugged at her sleeve.

"what do you mean by an 'actual job'?", y/n questioned, holding akamine's arm to stop her from ruining mio's beautiful face.

"i mean i actually work and i don't spend all my time sweet talking and screwing half the V league", mio said with a frustratingly straight face, "bokuto koutarou, ushijima wakatoshi, miya atsumu- talk about sleeping your way through"

oikawa wasn't very fazed by this because he more or less knew about all of this.

"wait, miya atsumu?", akamine questioned, joining the dots, "oh. oh. you're the hot mystery woman. that makes so much sense."

"midori-", y/n looked at her out of guilt but she nudged her

"let's talk about it later", akamine shrugged before glaring at mio, "what's your name again?"

"mio"

"mio...", she looked at her with a sweet smile, "it must really suck."

"i don't know what you're talking about"

"it must be hard being this fucking jealous and bitter"

cami covered her mouth and stifled a laugh. then she turned it into a sneeze. thankfully no one in the tense atmosphere noticed.

mio walked towards akamine with a glare on her face.

"what reason would i have to be jealous of her?", she questioned.

"you really lack so much awareness, mio-chan", akamine snorted.

y/n felt oikawa walk closer to her, nervousness creeping over her. she didn't even know what to tell him.

cami seemed to notice the tension between the two of them so she slung an arm over mio's shoulder and led her away.

"maybe you simply need a drink, honey", cami worked her charm perfectly, motioning to akamine to come along with them.

"are you okay", akamine whispered to y/n who simply nodded, "tell me what happens"

now both of them were alone.

for a few seconds, they said absolutely nothing.

"i didn't follow you here", y/n broke the silence first and he looked up at her, nodding slowly.

"how long have you been here?", he asked

"it's been... nearly two weeks i think", she explained, "it was a job transfer and my boss knew that i knew you so he... i don't have the energy to explain."

"did you come to my opening game?", he questioned, piecing everything together with a new perspective.

"yeah, i'm sorry. you weren't going insane."

"fuck", he breathed, "why didn't you just come see me?"

"i don't know", she buried her face in her hands, "we have a lot to talk about"

"y/n", he walked closer to her and he held her wrists, "look at me, please"

she slowly lowered her hands from her face and she sighed.

"before anything else...", his voice wavered as he struggled to deal with the fact that she was here. "i'm sorry. for everything."

"tooru...", she whispered, coming closer to him. for the first time in months, she could feel again.

"i'm sorry for being an asshole", he took both of his hands in hers, "i'm sorry for hurting you. and i'm sorry for not calling you to tell you that i..."

her eyes fluttered shut. her hands were trembling in his because he was finally here and he was so fucking close and she missed him and she-

she opened her eyes.

"you told me i was pathetic for loving you.", she said, her voice faltering halfway as she struggled to express how he made her feel, "i know you were drunk when you called but you- you made me feel like i was the problem"

she could tell that he didn't remember. his eyes were swimming with guilt.

"you're not pathetic", he whispered, "i'm the pathetic one. i thought- i was jealous and irrational. i didn't want you to love someone else."

she scoffed. yeah right, as if she could love someone else.

"let's talk later", she took two steps back from him, "i'll call- i'll text you"

"y/n-"

"you also told me that loving me was a mistake, tooru"

"i'm sorry", he repeated, the longing in his voice making her broken heart soften for him, "i know it's not enough but it's all i have. i'm so sorry."

"i can't...", she took another step back, one figurative foot out the door.

but he held her hand, slowly pulling her back to him. he was not about to let her go again.

he guided her closer, enveloping her in his arms. her head rested against his chest. for the first time in months, she could feel herself tearing up.

"tooru, i'm tired", her voice wavered but he only tightened his hold on her.

"i love you", he whispered, his lips pressing lightly against her forehead, "and... just because i haven't loved you for long enough doesn't mean i've loved you any less."

his words made her realise what she was afraid of all along. she was scared that he didn't mean it. scared that his feelings would fade and that the only person that got hurt in the end would inevitably be her.

she had spent a large part of her life loving him and she was okay with it. she had made peace with it till he insinuated that he could return her feelings. that he was returning her feelings before she knew it.

"baby...", he whispered when he suddenly felt her sniffle a sob into his chest. "shhh.."

he felt her fall apart in his arms, knowing he would keep her together. and he didn't realise when tears were rolling down his face too.

she was crying from all the feelings that had built up in her. she was crying from the realisation that she could cry.

he was crying from relief. overwhelming relief.

they stayed like that for a while in silence. taking in each other's presence. they missed this.

"why are you crying?", she whispered, rubbing his back.

"you didn't say it back", he accused, voice teary

"i love you, it's kind of obvious", she stated

"i-i i just missed you", he said in a shaky voice and felt her nod.

"we are fucking wimps", she remarked, the sound muffled because she was squished against him.

both of them broke into laughter, the kind that felt like the stillness of the air after the storm.

"how in the world did you become friends with miya atsumu's ex", he randomly asked without breaking away from the hug.

"i don't know, everything seems so connected"

-โ€ข-โ€ข-โ€ข-

there is a difference between kissing someone you're attracted to and kissing someone you love.

and oikawa noticed this difference as the girl he loved pressed her lips to his in the backseat of a taxi.

"i missed you", he murmured, feeling her smile against his lips.

oikawa had walked out of the bar through the back entrance carrying y/n bridal style. she refused to let him go out through the main entrance of the bar like this because they both would look ridiculous and also already looked like they'd been crying.

y/n waved at akamine as she was leaving and the girl had winked at her. akamine was happy because maybe for the first time since she'd met her, y/n's smile was wide and genuine.

the newly reunited couple sat in the backseat of a taxi that would take them to his house.

she turned to him and hesitated a second before leaning in and pressing her lips to his.

oikawa understood the difference between being attracted to someone and being so hopelessly, deeply in love with someone.

before he loved her, her kisses used to steal his breath away.

and now, her kisses felt like they were breathing life back into him.
