one memory. oikawa had one distinct memory of his best friend's little sister. it used to play in his head over and over for weeks after he left the country.

to put it simply, oikawa failed to reach the summit in his final attempt.

right from the moment the ball left an impact on his forearms and fell past the boundary of the court for the very last time, earning the referee's conclusive whistle, everything was a blur.

he walked to the baseline. he thanked the crowd. in his own way, he let his teammates know he appreciated them. he listened to his coach convey his reassurance about them being a great team despite the loss.

oikawa understood that it was true. it was just unfair that he didn't reach his goals even though they were within his grasp.

he was trying.

to not let himself feel disheartened, to understand that this wasn't the end of the world, to not be tired of chasing people more gifted than him.

he was trying to keep believing that hard work would get him somewhere because if he ceased to believe that, his career really was as good as over.

between masking his agony to trash talk shiratorizawa's captain and contemplating leaving the sport for good, he felt suffocated and overwhelmed.

and that's when she appeared.

"tooru"

he was alone. they'd just come back to the school from the stadium. the sky was dark. his teammates had gone on ahead and he said he'd meet them to eat later on.

he didn't think he'd see iwa's sister walking straight towards him.

she seemed like she'd been crying. her eyes looked a little red. as if she was as torn up about the loss as the rest of them.

"y/n-chan..."

"i wanna offer you something"

he tried to keep up his shallow demeanour as he tilted his head.

"oh? what is it?"

"a hug", she was surprisingly blunt when she said it with no hesitation.

his smile faded when he realised she was serious, and he nodded, closing the gap between them slowly.

she wrapped her arms around his neck cautiously, feeling his hands around her torso pull her closer.

his eyes fluttered shut when he realised how much he needed it, just staying that way for a few seconds. it was quiet and comfortable.

"better?", her tone was soft when she felt him relax.

and he hummed, his shoulders slumping as he prolonged the hug. he was alarmed by how he could feel her heart beat faster.

now that he looks back, maybe she was even trembling. he didn't understand why.

"thank you", he whispered and her arms around him only tightened. he responded by burying his face in her neck.

he was merely grateful.

but she was so in love.

-â€Ē-â€Ē-â€Ē-

the thing about kawasaki mio was that she could read people very well.

she could understand how they felt by their body language, expressions and by words they said but didn't mean.

she had watched iwaizumi y/n be hopelessly in love with oikawa tooru long before she came along and long after their relationship met its end.

tooru thought of his best friend's little sister fondly, cared about her fiercely and praised her at every chance he got. despite all of this, he never would reciprocate her feelings and she knew it.

mio knew that y/n bore an inferiority complex towards her, the then-owner of oikawa tooru's heart.

and in the beginning, she had simply pitied her. she was nice to her and she became someone she could rely on. she babied her and confided in her and did everything that a good friend would do.

but that was because she enjoyed that feeling of superiority. she wanted to be friends with y/n only till she could feel that sense of superiority.

and y/n's newfound confidence, getting involved with oikawa, bringing him as a date... let's just say, she was not a fan.

"you okay?", y/n was out of the bathroom a good five minutes after mio left and the man that asked these words was oikawa tooru.

"yeah", she said without thinking, smoothing her hair absent-mindedly.

y/n was not usually a jealous person. she was easygoing, maybe a little petty sometimes and she tried her best to be nice to everyone.

but when it came to oikawa... he used to be a sore spot for her for years. and apparently he still was, cause she could feel mio's eyes on her and the only thing she felt was rage.

"tooru, what were you talking to mio-chan about?", she asked, wrapping her hand around his arm as they walked towards the open bar

"what were you talking about to tobio-chan?", he countered, looking at her like she was the only person in the whole room.

"...i was telling him he was sloppy in yesterday's game", she said and then looked at the bartender to give her drink order.

"yeah he was", oikawa agreed, earning a questioning glance from her

"how do you know? did you watch-"

"no i didn't!", he said it too defensively, shaking his head, "he's always sloppy, he sucks"

"keep telling yourself that", she laughed, taking a sip of the drink handed to her

"he said something that made you smile", he poked her arm, "what is it? what is it? what is-"

"wow, i didn't know you could be so jealous tooru", she raised her eyebrows at him

"i'm not jealous", he huffed, "tobio-chan doesn't compare to me"

"that's true but he doesn't need to know that"

"i love the optimism", she stated and then downed the drink, "do you wanna kiss me again?"

"yes", he said without skipping a beat.

she walked a little closer to him, staring at his lips, "really?"

his eyes widened. he looked around for people listening, especially hajime. but people were engaged in their own conversations and couldn't care less.

at least, most of them.

"yes please", he whispered, "let's get out of here right now"

"i can't do that yet", she whispered back, "and where-"

"let's go", he said bluntly, "you have car keys don't you?"

y/n looked around the room to wherever mio was standing, lips forming a thin smile. then she nodded.

when tanaka and kiyoko were back and all the attention was turned to them, oikawa and her went away from prying glances.

his hand was resting along her lower back as they walked through the crowd. rei saw y/n and only smiled.

as they walked, they saw kuroo and his girlfriend walking into the elevator at the lobby, barely able to keep their hands off of each other.

y/n got flashbacks from that night when the both of them practically destroyed- nope, this wasn't the time to think about her impulsive threesome.

but her thoughts would be wiped out all the same as oikawa wrapped his arm around her waist to pull her close. the sky was dark and lights dimming and music fading but he looked perfect anyway. he always did.

there were butterflies in her stomach. she was fucked.

"have you seen y/n-chan?", she heard someone ask for her. it sounded like her friend that was talking to mio earlier.

y/n did not wish for a confrontation so she pulled oikawa into a darker corner right next to the beginning of the parking lot. it was nearly hidden away because of the sharp angle it was located at as well as the fact that there was negligible lighting in the small space.

"woah", oikawa muttered, "i meant we could go to my place or-"

her back was against the cold wall. he was so close. she could hear him breathe. she could hear her own heart beat loud as fuck.

out of the corner of her eye, she saw three girls enter the parking lot together.

she hoped they wouldn't see her and at the same time, she desperately hoped they would.

"y/n", oikawa whispered and suddenly he had all of her attention

she hummed, one of her hands tugging at his tie to pull him closer. his breath was shallow as he stared at her lips.

there was a millisecond of anticipation and then he was kissing her again. hard. as if he'd been on his best behaviour all night and he now deserved a prize.

his hands were all over her in a matter of moments, running up her sides while using his weight to pin her against the wall.

his tongue met hers and she had to stop herself from moaning. it was messy. her fingers were tangled in his hair and she felt short for breath.

he was soon pulling away from the kiss, his lips falling to her neck instead. he nipped at the sensitive skin and this time she moaned quietly.

"tooru~fuck-", her hips moved slightly forward to grind against his, causing his hands to tighten around her.

her lips were parted, breaths shallow and focus entirely on his lips attached to her neck. it felt so good. he felt so good.

the world around her was pretty much falling away until... until she opened her eyes for a second.

her eyes were about halfway open when she saw someone watching the two of them. her eyes quickly widened but she made no effort to pull away from him.

mio was watching them.

her gaze met y/n's with an accusatory glare.

and mio expected the glare to work. she expected y/n to pull away immediately, to apologise profusely, to tell mio she was such a good friend for forgiving her, to never repeat this mistake ever again.

y/n did none of that.

y/n looked straight at her and then she only smirked.

she wasn't sure if it was visible but the look on mio's face told her that it definitely was.

"mio's watching us", she whispered to tooru, who kissed further down her neck and caused her to moan again.

"let her"
