18. she dared

'So, Imane and you seem close.' James asked as Rae held the cue stick while the staff member arranged the pool table for them.

Rae touched the pointed end and nodded, 'Yea. Roomies and best friend.'

They procceded when James started the game with his first break. He took another shot when the ball reached the pocket and Rae observed how good James was at the game. Mostly because she had no idea about the game.

'Okay it's your turn.' He said, pointing his finger at the balls she should take a shot on.

Rae clearly had no idea how, she just vaguely know on her basic knowledge but clearly her stance was incorrect. James watched her silently, unsure of what she was trying to do.

After a complete two minutes of trying to take a proper stance, she stroked only to completely miss and Rae groaned.

'This is harder than I thought!' Rae almost yelled, frustrated. She looked at James who was still eyeing her and his expressions weren't amissed by her.

'What?'

'Um, nothing.' He said, taken back by her loud voice. 'You probably don't have  any idea to play such games, even though you play games for a living.' He said with a nod and played his turn.

Rae took a deep breath, afraid she'd just take the stick and poke his eye out. But then James pocketed two more balls while Rae stood there holding a stick. It was for the first time she was playing a game and was at a losing end.

She hated losing.

'Go for the yellow one here.' James instructed.

At this time she just rolled her eyes and just pushed the stupid stick and by complete fluke, the ball pocketed and Rae smiled, raising her fist in the air. It was completely off stance, off rules but James didn't pointed it and Rae continued her aim at the other one.

'You don't talk much, do you?' Rae asked when James pocketed few more and they were onto few last rounds.

James pushed the stick and the black ball was down and that round was over. 'I speak when I think it's feasible. Incessantly talking just is not what I look forward to.'

'Wait what does incessant mean?' She asked.

James almost thought she was kidding but when she folded her arms across her chest, he realized she wasn't. 'Um, incessant means continously talking.'

Wow.

Now that she knew what it meant she realized how different they were.

Rae never wanted to run away this farther away from anyone as of now.

She shook her head, 'It's pretty hard then, for you to be here with me.' She said, tilting her head and folding her arms. 'Because I am the queen of incessant speech.'

James looked taken aback, 'Yet, you haven't spoken a lot today.' He said, eyeing her intense staring.

'Yes.' She said, as she took the cue stick when James was done arranging the set for the next round. 'It depends on my proximity with the person. I hardly know you.' She shrugged.

'And T?' James asked as Rae looked at him, confused. 'I see, he's quite acquainted with you.'

Rae didn't get what James was indicating and she thankfully didn't care either.

'Sykkuno is my homie. We share a braincell.' She said, smiling absentmindedly.

'What?' James asked, dumbfounded. 'Is it a streamer thing?'

'Oh. You wouldn't know.' Rae taunted, shrugging, 'and I don't think you'd like associating with us streamers.'

The tension was hardening, the air around the duo was stiff as James kept the stick aside and shook his head at Rae.

'I am sorry, did we step on the wrong foot?' He asked, genuinely confused.

Rae let out a humorless chuckle, 'I would have explained.' She eyed him, 'But, let's just say this egg girl doesn't really like weird nicknames.' With that Rae raised her brow and James stood still, his face expressionless and Rae smirked slightly.

'Rae!' They heard Janet screaming from the other end of the lawn, and Rae waved back.

'Gotta go.' Rae said handling the cue stick to James who walked towards her and took it back.

With that Rae walked towards Janet and she was never more thankful to Janet coming at the right moment and saving her.

That night Imane, Janet, Alex and Alex's best friend Simon were out at the Alex's room and seated with wine, whiskey and a game of cards. They had been done with all the arrangements and Imane wanted to relax a bit before sleeping for the night and Rae suggested that a glass of wine would do.

Their families were all tucked in their rooms and Janet was drowsy already but she sat on the bed, not wanting to miss the fun. Imane was seated in between Akex and Rae, while Simon was up chatting with Janet.

The knock on the door interrupted their conversation as James peeped in. Rae looked at the guy, who was dressed in jeans and a fitting white t-shirt while she sipped her wine and Alex handed him the laptop charger.

'J, why don't you join us?' Alex said, as Imane nodded while Rae hid her groan.

'James doesn't like to play.' Rae said curtly, eyeing James who had locked her gaze with her. 'I am pretty sure he's preoccupied with work. Right?'

Janet's sleep instantly vanished as she eyed the duo, one seated on the bean bag, one standing with a shut laptop while Simon was grinning, enjoying the tense environment. Imane gave Rae a knowing look and Rae shrugged, while James took a deep breath.

'I wouldn't wanna intrude.' He said, looking at Alex and then Imane.

Imane shook her head. 'Nothing as such, James. You're more than welcome. And I'll come to know more of how Alex is at work.'

'Ooh.' Simon said from behind them. 'Dirty office secrets.'

'All of them?' Alex asked Imane, pouting.

'All!' She chuckled and James entered their room.

He took a seat at at the chair next to Rae's bean bag while Imane and Alex sat on the floor, Janet and Simon joining them.

'This is so fun.' Simon said rubbing his arms, pouring everyone some wine and a whiskey for Janet.

'Nothing for me please.' James said, smiling a bit. 'I have an important call tomorrow.'

'Come on man!' Alex nudged him. 'I thought we're on vacation. Let's go!'

'He doesn't do vacation, Alex.' Rae said, simply smiling, as she finished her wine. 'We shouldn't force our will onto others, you know.'

James looked at her, confused but the game they decided to play started and Rae couldn't care less of what James thought about her.

He had insulted Sykkuno's decision to be a streamer, insulted her profession and work and belittled them with his high and mighty job. Rae had literally nothing to do with him.

He could just vanish and she wouldn't even budge.

All she had to do right now was to sit still and let the two days pass, without intervening them with James. She hoped that nothing would affect her uplifting mood.

'Alright Rae, you gotta chose, tell us your secret or chose a dare.' Alex asked  as Imane mouthed dare.

'Um, throw me the dare, I'll chose anything.'

'Anything?' Janet asked, narrowed her gaze.

'Anything!' Rae yelled, the alcohol hitting her early.

And Simon smirked, looking at James and then at Rae while the latter now regretted accepting dare.
