May 7th

"You're stealing! He's stealing!" A toddler said loudly as Tez shamelessly put candy in his pockets.

"I was gon bring it back with yo loud ass!" He threw a lollipop at her head and walked out, seeing Xander in distress across the mall.

He didn't like being out in public with other people. Everybody got on his nerves and managed to make him dislike them by the end of the day except Tez and Chubbs.

They met Chubbs a few months ago while they coincidentally ran into eachother while running away from the police. They'd been down ever since.

"No running!" A mall cop said in Xanders ear, making him turn around and look at him crazy.

"Nigga you in my ear. No screaming." He looked back down at his watch seeing it was 7pm and prayed Tez got bored so he could get away from Vince.

"Do I look like a nigga to you?"

"No sir." Xander said politely, feeling the strong urge to violate the middle aged white man.

"Let's go, racist ass mall." Vince and Chubbs began walking but Xander tapped them getting their attention.

"Sir you have a bug on your neck. Stay still." Xander approached him slowly, and the man freaked out quietly.

"Get it off!"

"I gotchu." Xander smirked and Tez laughed as he walked close to the front door wanting to be as far away from his best friend as possible.

He quickly unclipped the back of the chain then grabbed it off the mans neck before he could react. Tez, Chubbs, and Xander laughed loudly as they dashed out of the automatic double doors, the man not far behind them as they ran.

Vince on the other hand freaked out as he ran out with them on the verge of tears.

"Hey!"

"Aww shit!" Tez said when he heard police sirens, growing more and more excited as his legs took off with ease.

"Yerrr!" Xander said loudly, stuffing the heavy chain in his jacket pocket before hopping the fence and taking off again.

He hadn't ran from the police in weeks, he could honestly do this in his sleep.

"Why they catching up?" Chubbs asked, turning and shooting at the cars recklessly.

Chubbs was skinny as hell, had never been fat a day in his life. He ate a lot so everyone assumed he was only skinny because he was always running from the damn police.

Xander jumped another fence and turned the corner with Tez, running until the sound of sirens silenced and the lights faded.

"You still got it?" He asked through labored breaths, leaning over and looking up at his friend.

"Hell yeah!" He smiled, pulling it out of his pocket and taking off his jacket as they walked to a bench.

Xander heard his phone ring and answered, seeing Chubbs laughing loudly on the screen.

"Vince stupid ass crying. Fuck you crying for pussy?!" Chubbs teased, nudging his head.

"Unlike y'all I'm scared of jail!"

"Stay yo ass in the house then bitch. I just stole this months rent." Xander laughed, looking at the thick gold chain shine in the night. It was getting dark and this chain was sexy.

"Bro you can't just be stealing shit. He might've worked his ass off fo-"

"Don't care. Never did. If I see his ass again I'll take the clothes off his back, old white racist ass." He shrugged, not wanting to hear it.

"You cool with this Tez?"

"I'll steal the bib off a baby shit I don't care."

"Take yo ass home. Bye you boring." Chubbs said to Vince.

"I'm normal."

"And clearly we ain't so skip jiffy or I'll make some cornbread off that Apple Watch on yo wrist, with my theivin ass." Chubbs taunted, making Tez and Xander laugh.

"Fuck y'all I'll see y'all tomorrow." Vince grumbled, walking off.

"I'll call you tomorrow." Xander hung up and Tez sucked his teeth seeing his moms car in the driveway.

Tez was from Bankhead but his mom wanted him out of trouble, moving them into a modest one story house in the ghetto instead of glen circle, the apartment complex they used to live in. He was still getting in trouble because it was in his nature but it was a less dangerous area, but it was still dangerous.

"Yo momma care about you and you don't know how to stay out of trouble." Xander pointed out, seeing the porch light on.

"Yo aunties care about you and you don't know how to stay out of trouble."

They just looked at eachother, not knowing what to say from there. Tez was really playful but deep down inside he was an angry person, it didn't take a lot to make it let it be known. Anywhere at anytime he could snap which is why he tried being nice hoping people could give him the same courtesy.

"Im so used to people not caring that I forget that I can't do what I want. You think Jay really love me?" He asked seriously, leaning back on a bench by the park.

"Yeah, definitely. You love her?"

"Duh. I wanna be a better person. I hurt her feelings sometimes and it's not fair to her, I don't even do it on purpose. I'm just not used to loving someone and having to consider them. I've been doing what I wanted since I could walk like deadass."

"My momma work all the time but it ain't enough for her to do what she want. Shit I gotta get it, don't matter how to me." Tez shrugged and looked up at the sky, hearing crickets making noise in the patch of grass beside him.

"Ain't no wrong way to make money and can't nobody tell me nothing. Just because I don't like the way somebody make theirs don't mean it ain't logical. Making money is never moral. There is no moral way to make money because you taking from somebody someway."

"Whatchu mean?"

"Even the cashier behind the counter at Walmart going out sad. Half they fit sweatshop made, the resources to make it come from countries we stealing from or once colonized. They know but it don't matter if they make they money. It's life."

Tez just nodded in understanding, taking the idea into consideration.

"Don't nobody genuinely give a fuck about other people enough to stop living the life they live to better another's. You don't see bill gates dropping billions to Africa to end world hunger. He could do that and still sleep on money beds. That nigga don't care, nobody do. They all sleep good as fuck at night knowing somebody else is starving."

"When I die fuck it I wanna go to hell, cause imma piece of shit it ain't hard to fuckin tell." Tez sang quietly, feeling his chest heavy with the idea of dying.

"It don't make sense goin to heaven with the goody goodies, dressed in white I like black timbs and black hoodies." Xander sang back, scraping the heel of his shoe against the rough cracked concrete.

"Hanging with the goody goodies lounging in paradise, fuck that shit, wanna tote guns and shoot dice!" They said at the same time, laughing at the ironic lyrics.

"Jaylani I don't know what to tell you girl be good and hope she let you leave." Laylani shrugged before hanging up.

"What's wrong with him?"

"Mommy took her phone and told her she couldn't have company over, including Xander. She called from the house phone crying and it took everything in me to not laugh at her."

People thought the kids went without discipline but all of them stayed in line for the most part. There was no talking back, sneaking out, or failing classes.

"What he did?"

"Got smart with the teach then walked out when she got mad. Ma was gon take her phone and keep it pushing but she caught attitude about that so now she really in trouble."

"You got in trouble when you was his age, have some sympathy."

"Uhhh no I didn't I was the good one." Laylani said with a laugh, looking at her nails as the lady finished, shooing her off to the sink.

"You not holding my baby with them claw machines tongs."

Taylin grabbed her hand and looked at her nails. She didn't wear makeup or weave but she loved long ass nails.

"Lets go I'm hungry." Laylani said tiredly, having already paid for the $140 set of nails.

Taylin just nodded as they left the shop, thinking about how fun life was back home. But he also took the fact that he was a grown ass man into consideration.

At some point you have to level up and mature.

"What you wanna do now?" Taylin asked, hoisting her up when she began to slip. Whenever she was around him she didn't walk anywhere. She was light and easy to carry around so it was never a problem for him.

They also decided to spend time together with this being the 3rd or 4th day he'd had completely basketball free since before last week. Either he was home for 10 hours or gone for 2 days.

"I don't know. I need my body waxed." Laylani said suggestively, laughing underneath her breath knowing she was trying him.

"I'm not putting wax no where near my dick so you can forget about it. It's fine the way it is." Taylin rolled his eyes making her laugh out loud.

"You don't get that hairy anyways I was just joking. Even your arms and legs are normal. Most boys have an obscene amount of body hair and it's disgusting. Need to shave that shit off."

"I keep myself up to par out of consideration. You're welcome." He retorted, still bothered with her implying that he was hairy which was definitely false. He hated dirty unkempt people and when Andrew told him he only shaved like once a year he could feel himself on the verge of vomiting.

It wasn't necessary but it made him feel cleaner. Even when he saw long ass armpit hair it made his stomach turn, regardless of gender. The only body hair he'd put up with was Laylani's and his. He naturally wasn't all that hairy and she could really do no wrong so it didn't matter to him.

"Okay so let's.. I want a tattoo. Like something cute. I should get a tramp stamp!" Laylani said in quiet excitement, making him sick his teeth again.

"Shut up. If you get a tattoo get something fye, you soft so I can't really imagine it."

"I do have one tattoo." She rolled her neck and moved one arm away from his neck to show her the one in between two fingers.

"A.M. Cute. Point proven. Wait." He squinted his eyes, wondering if he was being delusional.

"Ahmir Muhammad. It's been there since I was pregnant taytay." She called him by his nick name letting out a yawn as he walked into foot locker.

"You said you'd never get me tattooed on you because I'm wishy washy and if we break up-"

"And if we break up, you'll still be my friend. For the rest of my life. Unless you cheat on me of course. I want these." She jumped down from his back and picked up a pair of rainbow AirMax 97's.

She did say that but was before he got her pregnant, proposed, and asked her to move in with him. She used to question his commitment.

"You don't even wear sneakers yo fatass just wear slides all day. Do you even know what they called?" He asked mockingly, being mean just because he felt like it.

"No. But I want them. They're cute so stop being a bully."

"They got other colors. You want another pair? You need actual shoes." Taylin pulled another shoe down and she shrugged, liking the design.

"I guess." She picked out multiples pairs that were different styles and chose them in different colors from there. She was a size 5 so most of her shoes were $90 regardless of the style.

He genuinely didn't care about what she spent on what she liked and he never did. Laylani had hundreds of shoes floating around and only wore 6 pairs.

"I'm done." She said quietly, hiding behind him and only peaking her head out from behind him when the cashier made uncomfortable eye contact.

"You mixed?" The girl asked randomly.

"No. Not directly. My mother's father was Vietnamese."

"Is that your sister?" The girl behind the counter asked, slightly confused. They were hugged up but Laylani was so small compared to him, standing right above his elbow.

"Fiancรฉ." He answered, feeling Laylani's hands wrap around his waist, body still hiding behind his.

"My bad, I see a lot of weird shi- I mean stuff here. Cash or card?" She asked politely.

"Cash." He pulled out his wallet and she laughed quietly, singing a song in her head.

I need a rich nigga too chile. Fuck this job. Lemme stop being grown bitch.

"She looks Jaylanis age." Laylani said quietly, making him nod.

"How old are you?"

"Sixteen sir. You got money and yo girlfriend seem shy so I'll just say it off rip. I am not into prostitution so-"

Taylin's mouth fell open in shock and Laylani laughed, shaking her head.

"My sister visits sometimes, she's 15 and from Atlanta so she doesn't know anyone here. You seem fun, wanna be her friend?" Laylani asked seriously.

"Awww you're so cute." Raven nodded and put her Instagram on the notepad next to her, making Laylani blush.

"Right. She think I'm the only one that faw-"

"Wait a dam-dang minute. You play basketball?" She asked, taking a good look at Taylin who'd she seen somewhere.

"Yeah."

"Oh shi-shoot y-oh my god I saw you on TV the other day my grandma think you just so fine can you sign my shoe?" She asked seriously, kicking off the white Air Force and putting it on the counter with a sharpie.

"Y-yeah." He mumbled, growing shy.

Him and Laylani were both shy and easily embarrassed but he only got that way when he felt flattered. She stayed in her shell around other people regardless of what was being said.

"Thank you! I hope y'all have a good day!" She said with enthusiasm, bagging up Laylanis shoes and signing off the hundreds he put on the counter.

"You're so ado-"

"Shut yo ass up." Taylin grumbled, slapping her hand away from his cheek.

-

"We've been together for I don't know how long and you've never mentioned your grandfather being Vietnamese." Taylin pointed out as he put up his shoes.

"He was ghetto Vietnamese. Wanna see?" She asked, pulling out the picture Naomi gave her. Her dad wasn't a deadbeat like Sandra played him out to be, he was in jail.

"The fuck? This nigga is black." Taylin squinted hard, seeing a tall Asian man with face tattoos and dreads down his back.

"No he ain't. I have slanted eyes, Jaylanis eyes are slanted, and Milani has slanted eyes. Kambren and Isys have round eyes like our dad. Big ass eyes."

"This is ghetto."

"Taylin your daughters name is Namiko Sanai Muhammad and my name is Laylani Xuan Willis. Nahjay isn't my legal middle name." Laylani explained, laughing at his confused expression.

"Y-"

"Da!"

Taylin looked in the doorway and Namiko stood there catching him off guard.

"You standing up by yourself?" He asked, getting up and walking towards her.

"Da!" She wobbly walked to him and Laylani smiled smugly, already having seen her walk.

"When did she- bro what?!" He smiled happily, holding her hands as she giggled and continued walking to the bed.

"The other day. You were at work." She said casually, making him frown at the thought.

"The season is over now thank god. I hate missing big moments." He said under his breath, kissing Sanai's cheek when he pulled her up and onto the bed.

"It's not a big deal. Atleast she was excited to do it for you again. We have to pack by the way."

Taylin groaned and shook his head, not in the mood for responsibility. He wanted to lay down and talk to his daughter who couldn't seem to want enough attention. It wasn't a problem though, coming home was his favorite part of the day.

"Sanai let mommy take your picture." Laylani pulled out her phone and she looked at Taylin, seeing the gummy worms by the night stand.

She was 10 months old and he still didn't understand how her skin constantly changed colors. Some days she was a deep milk chocolate and other days she was caramel. When she was first born he didn't expect her to look exactly like her mom but she did.

She had his eyebrows and hair though.

"Okay cool." Laylani nodded, sucking up her pride. Namiko after so fake with Taylin was around.

"I'm not packing shit. Moving is so annoying. Can't I just pay somebody to do it?"

"Yes bu-"

"Problem solved. You want one Nami?" He asked, holding out the gummy worm.

-

Jaylani rolled her eyes as he asked the lady at Waffle House for more syrup for the second time.

"G'looks." He said under his breath, making Chubbs and Tez laugh.

He noticed the little packet she gave him and made a face immediately calling her back over.

"Sir can you leave me alone?"

"All I wanted was some syrup. Can I please get more syrup?"

Chubbs put his head down on the table as he laughed loudly. He knew Xander was really about to annoy her since she wanted to be rude.

"No you can't get no more syrup! If the waffle is dry then drink the juice you bought! You called me over about syrup multiple times!"

"I wouldn't be calling you about syrup if you gave me enough. Hoe all you had to do was bring me the fuckin bottle and I could've handled it on my own but yo nappy headed ass wanna get an attitude." Xander retorted, putting more syrup on the waffle.

"Who you talkin to? Lil boy you need to get you some respec-"

"Woahhh relax. You got syrup and she bout to go to the back so-" Jaylani tried intervening, not wanting him to cuss her out again but Xander wasn't going for it.

"Bitch you grown working at da mufuckin Waffle House, mad as fuck cause I asked for syrup with these dry ass waffles. The fuck you want me to eat em with?" He asked seriously, getting up and putting a 20 on the table.

"Get your food and get out sir!"

"Girl fuck you bye!" He put his finger up with his other arm around Jaylani, Tez and Chubbs in the background dying as they began walking out.

"Stupid ass nigga." She mumbled from behind them.

"She actin classy throw some money on a stank hoe!" Tez sang, throwing change behind him.

-

When Jaylani got home she noticed the shiny chrome pink Bentley in the drive way and rolled her eyes but smiled in excitement at the same time knowing Laylani was home.

"When she get back in town?" Xander asked, taking notice of the flashy car as well.

"I don't know." She shrugged before unlocking the door and walking in.

Laylani was sitting next to Taylin who had Namiko on his lap on the couch. Amber and Naomi were cooking and Nasir sat in the high hair by the bar, bothering them while they did so.

"Hey ihiti." Laylani smiled, quickly frowning when she looked
