Chapter-Ten

Brandon's POV:

I glanced around the examination room to search Madeline but I didn't find her anywhere at the sight.

A teacher handed me the exam paper and I took the test silently. My mind went back to my best friend who didn't call me this morning to wish me luck for the exam.

The bell rang and I run out after handing my examination sheet to the teacher. I went to her class to find the students rushing out of the room laughing, shouting and smiling. They had a right to be happy after all it was the last day of school.

My eyes roamed around in the search of one girl who was making me insane by ignoring me.

I caught Madeline staring at me and I felt a punch in my gut at the emotions in her eyes. I didn't understand why stare affected me that much. But they made my heart beat faster and my mind blocked the rest of the world out. I could only see her standing there in her usual messy attire. Her blonde hair with brown streaks was touching her back in loose curls.

I started walking in her direction at the normal pace but she took off.

"Madeline!" I yelled her name. Other students looked at me confused.

"Madeline, stop!" I yelled.

She turned and looked at me but didn't stop running away. I pushed aside the students, running in the hallway like a madman. When I reached the parking lot, she was gone.

In past, we fought many times and had arguments. But she never ran away from me like that. Actually, I started to ignore her first because I was angry at her for making a stupid decision to date that Connor. But I realized my mistake and tried to talk to her.

I called her thousands of times but she didn't pick my call. I went to her house but she refused to meet me.

Now she had been ignoring me and avoiding me for weeks now.

From the day we become friends, I don't remember that we have ever studied alone for examination.

It was our thing to do combine studies either in her house or mine.

But this was the first time that I had to study alone. Before the exam, she would teach me calculus while I keep stopping her from chewing the pencil.

I didn't know how a petty argument turned into a war.

"Hi, baby, I was searching for you everywhere. Where are you going?" Laura said halting me in my steps.

"I was running after Madeline. I guess I have lost her again. Do you know why she is avoiding me?" I asked her shrugging off her hand from my bicep and walking in the direction of the parking lot.

"Brandon, please, stop. Listen, I know why she is ignoring you." She said.

"Why?" I asked her.

"She wants you to accept her relationship with Connor. She is in love with the guy." She said.

I was shocked. I couldn't believe it.

"Did she say it to you herself?" I asked her.

"No, I just know. I noticed how happy she has been with him" Laura said.

Why didn't I notice it?

I need to stop her from doing something stupid. That guy is not for her.

"She'll come around, just give her some time," Laura said.

"I have given her time, it's almost two weeks now. We have been the best friend for ages. Now we are turning into a stranger because of that jerk." I said opening the door my car and getting inside.

Laura got into the car and put the seatbelt on.

"Tell that you have no problem with her dating Connor." She said making me turn around to face her.

"Are you insane, Laura? Why would I tell her that I've no problem with her dating that good for nothing boy? He tried to force himself on her by drugging her." I said feeling angry.

"You don't know how girls think Brandon. She has never dated anyone before and you did the same because of her" She said staring down at her red stiletto.

"I've never dated before because I liked one girl and that is you. I was waiting for the right time to tell you what I feel about you so it has nothing to do with her." I said gritting my teeth.

"I know but she had your company. Now she's alone. You spend more time with me. We make plans where we don't include her. Before this, we used to make plans which involved three of us. She wants attention which only a boyfriend can give her." She told me like this justifies her explanation.

"Laura you and I both know she is not the attention seeker. There have to be something else behind this attitude of her. I will find out, don't worry." I said feeling defeated at the situation.

"There's another reason behind her ignoring you." She said making my head snap in her direction.

"What?" I asked her.

"She likes you," Laura said.

"I know she likes me that's why we become friends," I replied rolling my eyes at her.

"No, she likes you. Like she wanted to be your girlfriend but you never looked at her in that way." Laura said and my stare turned into a glare.

"Madeline? Are you talking about my best friend, Madeline?" I asked her.

She nodded her head making me laugh.

"It's not really funny, Laura," I said sarcastically at her stupid attempt of a joke.

"I have seen her eyes follow you everywhere. She was jealous when I announced that you asked me to become your girlfriend." She said with the clenched fist.

"Enough, Laura! You're talking about our friend. You know her for twelve years of your life. She has never shown a single sign that makes me think she is interested in me. You should feel ashamed right now for making this up." I said in anger.

"I...I'm not lying. You'll realize it one day." She yelled getting out of the car.

"Madeline and I are very close friends. You knew it from the very beginning and there is nothing romantic in our relationship." I said.

"Brandon, you will trust me one day." She tried to convince me once again. But I was not in the mood to hear her nonsense so I left.

I couldn't believe her. I never thought Laura would say something like this about Madeline.

I hoped that Laura would realize her mistake and changed her mind.

I arrived at my house but stayed in the car for a few minutes thinking what should I do to make her start talking to me again?

Sighing, I stepped out of the car and went inside my house.

"Hey, honey, how was your exam?" Mom asked while working in the kitchen.

Instead of going to my room I sat down on the kitchen counter and stared at my mom.

"The exam went well. Hopefully, I will get As in all subjects." I said.

"That's good. So why the grim face?" She asked me frowning.

I rubbed my hands on my face in frustration.

"Mom, it's about Madeline. She is ignoring me for weeks now and I have no idea why."

"Oh, I see. It's strange. Isn't it?" Mom said waving her spatula in front of my face.

"Mom, can I ask you something?"

"Sure." She replied still busy in her work.

"Mom is it possible that some person who was like really bad can suddenly change and become good?" I asked her.

"Well, it's possible that he/she can change with time. But it doesn't mean that things that they had done would ever change." She replied.

"So can we judge someone because of their past mistakes?" I asked.

"No, we can't judge them. But we should make sure that the person has really changed from the heart. They are not doing an act to fool you." She said.

I never trusted Conner. He was acting like he cares for Madeline to take advantage of my best friend. He always wanted her physically. If he loved her, he should have waited for her to accept him like I waited for Laura to accept me. He didn't have forced her and tried to force himself on her.

I knew my best friend deserves someone better than him.

I'll make her realize she is worthy enough to get a better man than him in her life. The man who will take care of her and love her.

It's what friends do, right?

They knock senses into your head when you're going to do something stupid or do the stupid thing with you.
