The rain had passed the next morning, the dark clouds that hovered the day before felt like a distant dream as the sky cleared for the glorious sun's return. And the following days afterwards the sky didn't show any sign that it will rain for a while.

Tokyo had witnessed probably the most beautiful days of the year and it's perfect to go outside. However, you realized that people can't have everything all at once. Even though it's a good day and the sky is clear, the weather is not too hot or too cold, making it a perfect day to have a picnic in a park, you can't go outside.

No, it's not that you can't go outside yourself.

It's Suki who can't go outside.

The morning you woke up, you made breakfast as usual and you were waiting for Suki to make her bento together when you realized she hasn't come out of her room yet so you decided to go and check on her in case she is still asleep.

She is still lying on her bed, but when you walked up to her you noticed her eyebrows furrowed. "Suki-chan?"

She answered you with a supressed whimper. "Mommy..."

You quickly knew something was not right and your suspicion turned out to be true when you put your hand on her forehead and felt how hot it is.

"Suki-chan, you're burning," you said as the little girl slowly blink her eyes open and rubbed them while you stood up and headed to her drawer and took out a thermometer.

You put it between her lips before the little girl outstretched her arms and you picked her up. You pat her back a bit as she leaned on your shoulder and after a while you took out the thermometer. Her fever isn't that high for it to be alarming but it isn't low enough either.

"Let's change your clothes, Suki-chan," you said, placing her on her bed before heading to the dresser and taking out clothes for her to change on.

When you're done, you are about to tuck her back under the duvet but Suki whined and wrap her arms around your shoulders.

"Mommy," she said.

"Suki-chan, I'll just go to the kitchen for a while and bring you breakfast, alright?"

You tried to pull her arms down until she let go and you tucked her back in her bed, brushing some strands of her hair away from her face. You headed outside and saw Kenma in the kitchen.

"Where's Suki?" he asked.

"She's coming down with a fever," you said, taking a bowl and pouring the miso soup you cooked earlier while Kenma stood up.

"I'll go call her teacher, can you buy her medicine?" he asked, taking out his phone.

"Sure," you said. "Here, take it to Suki-chan. I'll be back quickly."

Kenma suddenly stopped, standing there with a bowl in hand and a phone in the other while you headed back to your room. After a second he decided to go to Suki's room and feed her breakfast first before calling her teacher.

When he got inside, Suki opened her eyes and look at him. "Mommy?"

"She went to the pharmacy."

"Daddy," she said, slowly sitting up as Kenma put the bowl on the side and helped Suki. "Daddy, why didn't you go instead?"

"Why don't you eat your soup instead?" Suki looked at Kenma with her eyes half-lidded before she opened her mouth and Kenma fed her a spoonful of soup.

While Kenma is feeding the little girl her breakfast, you headed to the nearest pharmacy to buy the necessary medicines for the little girl. You made sure to go back as soon as possible and when you finally got back you saw Kenma heading from Suki's room with an empty bowl of miso soup.

You took a glass of water and went to her room with the medicine to help lower down her fever.

"Suki-chan," you called.

"Suki finished the miso soup," she said and you smiled at her little accomplishment since you know how hard it is to eat when you have a fever yourself.

"That's great. Now Suki-chan needs to drink this."

She look at the medicine before she scooted back. "Suki doesn't like the taste of that."

"Oh but this one taste like strawberry, Suki-chan likes strawberries right?" she slowly nodded her head but she still looks scared to take the medicine.

"If Suki-chan takes her medicine, mommy will give Suki-chan something she likes later."

"Really?" she asked, her eyes slowly lighting up in excitement. "What is it, mommy?"

"It's a surprise," you said.

Honestly you still have no idea what to give her either. But you can just think about it later after she takes her medicine. You knew she's mature for her age but one cannot deny her childish side as well. This kind of trick often works on children after all and it didn't take you long until you had her drink the medicine.

Once she's done, you tucked her back in bed and caress her cheek. She still feels hot due to her fever but you know the medicine will take effect soon enough and hopefully her fever would go down within the day.

You stayed in her room until Suki fell asleep, she fell back asleep quite faster than usual, probably because of the medicine or the fact that her body just feels heavy due to the fever. You headed outside afterwards and heard Kenma's voice coming from the living room.

"This is Suki's father," he said. "Kozume Suki. She can't attend school today due to fever."

You headed to the kitchen to have your own breakfast, fortunately the miso soup didn't go cold and you enjoyed it.

After a while Kenma went to the kitchen. "Did she take the medicine?" he asked.

"Yeah," you answered while Kenma took a glass of water.

"She can be quite stubborn in taking her medicine," Kenma said.

"All kids can be stubborn when taking medicines, Suki actually took her medicine quicker than most kids."

Because you told her you'd give her something in exchange, which reminded you, you still don't know what to give her.

"What?" Kenma suddenly asked. "Did you tell her something in exchange of taking the medicine?"

You don't really need to ask how Kenma knew since you also know he might have done the same thing before. Instead you asked Kenma another question. "What do you think she'll like to have?"

"You told her you'll give her something she likes?"

You nodded, finishing the miso soup.

"Just give her anything," he said, downing the water in his glass. At first you thought he said that so nonchalantly as if he could care less about what his daughter want or that he doesn't know what she wants. Until he continued.

"She will like anything you give her."

You should have known that much, that Suki is that kind of child. She would never show her disappointment if you were to give her something that she might have not really like. As Kenma said so himself, she will like anything you give her.

In that sense it reassured you. But it's not like you'll just give her anything out of the blue, or anything random.

You had a whole day of thinking about it. You thought about giving her food, but you always cook her favorite food. You thought about making her onigiri but you know she'd be happier to make onigiri with you. Besides, she might not have the appetite to eat anything since she has a fever.

When you came back that evening to check on her temperature and have her drink medicine, you are thankful that her fever is slowly going down.

"Mommy," she called after she's done with eating dinner. "About what mommy said earlier."

"Oh, that," you said, sitting on the chair beside her while she lie on the bed. "Did you know that the weather today was really nice? The news said that the weather will continue to be that good and it will be the peak of spring soon."

The little girl nodded while she listens to you.

"So mommy thought about giving Suki-chan another family date."

"Really?! We'll go on another trip?!" she asked, her eyes wide and filled with glee.

"Well, not a trip this time," you said, since you think the reason why Suki got her fever was probably because of travelling for hours and she might not be used to it that much. "We'll go on a picnic at Ueno Park this weekend."

You've always wanted to go that park in Taito Ward since the cherry blossoms there bloom much earlier than other parts in Tokyo. But you have been busy with work before. This time around, you wouldn't be going there alone.

"So Suki-chan needs to drink her medicine and get better soon, alright?" you caressed her cheek and she scooted closer.

"Alright, mommy. Suki will be brave enough to take medicine and get better soon," she said.Β
