PONYBOY CURTIS STIRRED in his sleep. He opened his eyes to reveal the sun shining through his curtains. He looked over his shoulder to see his brother Sodapop was gone, meaning he was awake.

Ponyboy sat up rubbing his eyes, he stood up and stretched his arms out, yawning. He grabbed a random t-shirt he found in his drawer and slipped his jeans on.

He grabbed his shoes and he walked out of his room, once he walked out of the room he was hit with the smell of bacon. He walked towards the kitchen and found his older brother Darry making breakfast.

"Hey kiddo, sleep good?" Darry asked him, "Yeah." Ponyboy nodded setting his shoes down by the kitchen table and sitting down.

Darry placed a plate of eggs and bacon in front of Ponyboy, "Thanks." he mumbled and began picking at his eggs.

Sodapop came rushing in, his hair dripping wet. He grabbed a piece of bacon off the plate and rushed out of the kitchen searching for his shoes.

"Hurry up and eat, you got school." Darry said leaving the kitchen and Ponyboy nodded. He finished up the last of his eggs and slipped his shoes on.

He walked into the living room and scanned the room looking for his backpack.

"Hey Pony."

Johnny Cade, Ponyboy's best friend walked into the house. "Hey Johnny," Ponyboy said searching the living room, "Whatchu looking for?" Johnny asked.

"My backpack." Ponyboy answered looking behind the couch, "Oh, it's over by the door," Johnny said pointing at the door.

Ponyboy looked over at the door and spotted his backpack, "Thanks Johnny." Ponyboy said patting Johnny on the shoulder and grabbing his backpack.

Johnny gave him a small smile and he stood over by the door waiting for Ponyboy so they could walk to school.

"Hey, Darry I'm leaving!" Ponyboy shouted and Darry peeked his head out of the bathroom, "Okay, be good and stay out of trouble." Darry said pointing a finger at the two.

"Yeah, yeah, I know the rules." Ponyboy rolled his eyes and they walked out of the house.

Halfway to the school Dallas Winston joined the two, Dallas was one of their friends.

"Hey Dally," Johnny greeted as Dallas showed up, lighting a cigarette. "Sup Johnny."

"You goin to school Dal?" Ponyboy asked him, "Nah, school's for losers, I'm heading into town." Dally responded and they nodded.

The boys walked in silence to the school, although that silence was quickly disturbed by shouting coming from a nearby house.

They stopped in their tracks as they saw a girl stomp out of her house shouting a few things.

"Does it look like I give a fuck?!" She shouted waving her hands in the air, next thing a shoe is flying towards the girl.

She quickly ducked and she looked back her mouth wide open, "Fuck you!" She shouted and she stomped off the porch and towards the gate.

She opened the gate and she stepped onto the sidewalk, she stopped once she noticed the boys watching.

"What are you looking at?" She snapped at them and they stayed quiet their eyebrows raised. She walked ahead of them, also going to school.

The boys looked at each other and began walking once again. "Someone's feisty." Dallas whispered and he looked over at the angry girl.

Dallas smirked an idea coming to him, "Watch this." he said to the boys and he walked towards the girl. Johnny and Ponyboy looked at each other knowing that this wasn't going to end well.

"Hey," Dallas greeted walking beside the girl, the girl looked at him and rolled her eyes. "What do you want?" She asked him, not in the mood.

"Trouble with your mom, huh?" Dallas said and the girl rolled her eyes. "Not much of a talker I see." Dallas said and the girl was trying very hard to control her anger.

"Oh I talk, just not to you." she said and Dallas smirked, "Your feisty, I like that," he said and the girl stopped walking and looked at him.

"No one cares what you like." she said and Dallas just continued to smirk at her. "I care what I like and that's all that really matters," Dallas said and the girl scoffed.

"Right."

"What is that supposed to mean?" Dallas asked her, "Dally come on," Ponyboy said and the girl looked at him and back at Dallas.

"Dally? As in Dallas Winston?"

"Oh so you've heard of me?" Dallas smirked, "Yeah I've heard of you, I heard your a terrible person," she said and Dallas' smirk faded.

"You've gotten arrested many times, you steal, you fight, your rude, I wonder how your parents must feel," the girl said.

"They must be real disappointed in you." she said and Dallas glared down at her.

"Don't try to make conversation with me, it won't end well." the girl said and she walked away from him.

Dallas watched her walk off, "I don't like her." he said and Ponyboy chuckled.

"Looks like the feelings mutual." he said and Dallas looked at him.

"Shut up and keep walking."

Once they got to the school Dallas separated from the two boys, they walked into the school and went to their first class.

Class was over and Ponyboy walked out of the classroom, he spotted the girl that told Dally off down the hall. She didn't look very happy.

Although, she didn't seem like the happy type.

Ponyboy could see a crowd of jocks gathered up at the lockers and they were laughing at something.

No, they were laughing at someone. Ponyboy stood on his tiptoes trying to get a good look at the person, his eyes widened once he realized who the person was.

It was Johnny.

He was about to go over there and try to get Johnny out of the situation without trying to cause any trouble. But he stopped once he heard someone shout at the group of boys.

"Hey!"

The boys stopped laughing and looked over their shoulders to see a girl. The girl that talked down to Dallas Winston.

"Leave the boy alone." she said and they all looked at each other and back at the girl, "Or what?"

"Or I report you to your coach, and knowing the consequences I don't think you'd want that." the girl said and she crossed her arms.

"So what will it be, boys?"

The boys looked at each other and sighed, "Fine, let's go." one of them said and they all walked away sending glares towards the girl.

Johnny let out a sigh of relief and he looked at the girl, "You alright?" She asked him and he nodded.

"Yeah, t-thank you," he said shyly and she smiled.

"Skye Hart." she introduced herself sticking her hand out for him to shake. Johnny looked down at her hand and he grabbed it, "J-Johnny Cade."

"Nice to meet you Johnny," she smiled at him and he gave her a small smile. Ponyboy walked over to the two, "Hey Johnny, you alright? I saw what happened," Ponyboy said and Johnny nodded.

"Yeah I'm fine, thanks to Skye here," Johnny said gesturing to Skye. Ponyboy turned to Skye, "Thanks Skye, for sticking up for my friend here," Ponyboy said and Skye nodded.

"Someone had to."

"I'm Ponyboy." Ponyboy introduced and she smiled at him, "Nice to meet you."

"Your friends with Dallas, right?" She asked them and they looked at each other warily and they nodded.

"Yeah..."

"We're sorry about him, he can be an asshole sometimes," Ponyboy said.

"Don't worry about it, I know how to handle guys like him," Skye said and the bell rang. Skye took a step back, "I better go." she said and the boys nodded.

"Oh and tell Dallas that I didn't mean what I said, I was just trying to rial him up, get him to back off," Skye said walking backwards.

"Oh, uh ok yeah, sure we'll tell him," Ponyboy said and Skye smiled, "Great, see ya!" She called out jogging down the hall to her next class.

"Weird girl." Ponyboy mumbled watching Skye run off, Johnny nodded.

"Nice though." Johnny said and Ponyboy nodded.

"Yeah...let's go."

Skye slipped past the crowd of students and managed to make it to her next class in time. "Well would ya look at that, your finally early," her teacher said with a grin on her face.

Skye smiled, "Yeah, looks like luck is in my favor today," Skye said going to her seat. Her teacher chuckled.

"Looks like it."

Skye sat down pulling out her textbook and settling in. She heard a loud thump from behind her which made her jump a little, she whipped her head around to see what caused the noise.

It was a guy.

The first thing she noticed about him was his grin, it looked very...friendly. He had dark blond hair and long sideburns, some of his hair swooped down on his forehead.

He had his arms crossed and he had his feet propped up on the desk, he was grinning at her. He winked at her and Skye's eyebrows raised. She chuckled and shook her head.

Usually she would give someone a disgusted look and tell them off but with this guy...it was different. He seemed flirty, but then again, what guy isn't?

But he seemed flirty in a kind and funny way. He didn't look too cocky or rude, he looked fun.

The guy smirked and he took his feet off the desk and he leaned forward in his chair far enough to be able to whisper in Skye's ear.

"Hi," he whispered and Skye turned her head slightly to be able to see him from the corner of her eye. She smiled, "Hi," she whispered back.

"You new here?" He asked her, "No, are you?" She asked him and he shrugged.

"Not really."

He leaned back in his chair and she looked back at him, "Let me guess, your not here very often," she said and he let out a dramatic gasp.

"How'd you know?"

"Lucky guess."

"I like you...who are you?" He asked her and she chuckled, "I'm Skye Hart."

"Well it's nice to meet you Skye Hart, I am Two-Bit Mathews at your service,m." Two-Bit joked doing a small bow.

Skye chuckled at his goofiness.

"You may be early but that doesn't give you a free pass to talk in my class." the teacher spoke up and Skye looked back to the front her mouth open.

"Right, I'm sorry, paying attention now." she mumbled fumbling with her pencil.

She looked back at Two-Bit who was laughing silently, she bit back a smile and shook her head.

The rest of the class went by without any interruptions, in which the teacher was grateful for.

The bell rang signaling that it was time for the next class, everyone stood up and began packing up. As Skye put her textbook into her backpack, Two-Bit went over to her.

"Hello Skye,"

Skye paused and looked at him, "Hello Two-Bit, that's a strange name by the way, a lot of strange names recently," Skye said.

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah, I like it though, it suits you," Skye said and Two-Bit smiled, "Glad you like my name."

"I'm surprised I've never seen you before, I'm pretty sure I would remember a pretty face like yours," Two-Bit said pasting on a cheeky grin.

Skye chuckled, "I'm flattered, but you don't seem the type to come here very often so that's probably one of the reasons as to why you've never seen me," Skye said.

"Yeah well I'm eighteen and a junior, what do you expect?" Two-Bit said and Skye cocked an eyebrow.

"Eighteen and a junior? Wow..." Skye said and Two-Bit sighed, "Yeah I know I'm stupid." Two-Bit said.

"Your not stupid, you just don't try hard enough," Skye said as they walked out of the classroom. "You're not gonna learn anything by not coming to school and not paying attention, you could do anything if you just put your mind to it," Skye said.

"But you don't, the only reason you'd be dumb is because you didn't allow yourself to learn, and that's your fault." Skye continued.

Two-Bit scoffed, "What is this a lecture?"

"Yes actually it is, you're a greaser right?" Skye asked and Two-Bit nodded.

"Greasers aren't stupid, but they're not smart either, and that's because they don't care about school or learning, they only care about their looks and being tough, but if they all tried to come to school and actually learn something then they'd be really smart." Skye said.

Two-Bit stopped and looked at her, "You should be some kind of therapist or something," he said and Skye laughed.

"I'm sorry, I tend to ramble a lot, but I'm just speaking my mind," she shrugged and continued walking.

"That's one mind, you're really smart." Two-Bit said and Skye looked down and smiled to herself. "You a greaser?" He asked her and Skye bit her lip.

"Yeah."

"You don't look like one, I mean other than the clothes, you look more like a soc type," Two-Bit said. "Please don't compare me to a soc." Skye winced and Two-Bit chuckled.

"Alright I won't."

"See you later Two-Bit," Skye said walking away and he waved her goodbye.

Skye walked off to the direction of her next class, this one was a lot less boring than the other one. But she didn't care, she just wanted to get the day over with.

โ€”

AFTER SCHOOL SKYE went straight to work. She worked in a little diner that was near the school, she worked shifts there everyday after school.

It was a bad diner, fights broke out every now and then between some soc and a greaser. People came in trying to rob the place, they always failed and managed to leave the place with a broken a nose.

But Skye didn't mind any of that, she was used it by now, it was more of a regular thing. It'd be rare and weird if any of that stuff didn't happen.

Skye grabbed her pencil and notepad and went over to a table to take orders. "How can I help-" Skye froze when she looked up and realized who the person was.

Dallas Winston.

"You." she finished and he smirked at her, "What do you want Winston?" She asked him crossing her arms.

"I heard you worked here and I thought, since I know you, that I could get like a free soda or something," Dallas said and Skye scoffed.

"Yeah sorry, but that's not how it works," Skye said, "Hm, how disappointing." Dallas said playing with the salt shaker.

"Yeah well..."

"Ponyboy told me what you said today," Dallas said setting the salt shaker down. "Huh? Oh right." Skye said.

"So is it true? You didn't actually mean any of those things?" Dallas asked her, "No, I didn't, I was just trying to piss you off, looks like it worked," Skye smirked and Dallas scoffed.

"Whatever."

"Now you gonna order anything or are you just gonna sit there?" Skye said pulling her notepad back out.

"Bring me a coke." Dallas said and Skye smiled, "Coming right up."

A few minutes later Skye came back with the coke, Dallas grabbed a straw and stuck into his coke and took a sip.

"You know, you remind me a lot of Ponyboy," Dallas said. "Really? How so?"

"You're both smart." Dallas said and Skye chuckled, "Just because we're both smart doesn't make us alike," Skye said.

"And your both wise, do you like to read?" Dallas asked her and she shrugged, "Yeah, I guess."

"See, you two have a lot in common already," Dallas said and Skye chuckled and shook her head. "Yeah whatever Dallas, I gotta get back to work." Skye said and she walked away.

About half an hour later Dallas finally left, and Skye's shift was over. Once she got home her mother was at the kitchen table reading off a newspaper, drink in hand.

"Tips."

Skye stopped, "What?"

"Your tips, give me your tips." her mother said looking up from her newspaper and sticking her hand out.

"Uh...I don't have any tips?" Skye said and her mother gave her a look.

"So many customers but yet not one tip? What kind of waitress are you?" Her mother said and Skye rolled her eyes.

"I'm sorry but the tips I make are not for you, so even if I did get any tips I wouldn't give them to you," Skye said and her mother stood up.

"Yes you would because I am your mother and we need that money," her mother said, "First of all you are not my mother, second of all yes I know we need that money which is why you need to get a job!" Skye shouted waving her hands in the air.

"I am not getting a job I already told you that! And I don't care if I'm not your real mother, I still raised you! I fed you, I gave you everything you needed, and this is how your repaying me? After everything I've done for you!" Her mother shouted.

"Yeah and I thank you for that, but you stopped caring about me ever since your husband died and that was five years ago!" Skye shouted and her mother stayed quiet.

"Ever since then I've been taking care of myself, I've been working and helping to pay the bills and what have you been doing? You've been sitting on your ass the whole time and not doing a damn thing!" Skye shouted.

"Don't you talk to me like that!" Her mother shouted stomping towards Skye.

"I am your mother and you will respect me!" Her mother shouted and that sent Skye over the edge.

"You are not my goddamn mother! So stop saying you are because you're not and you never will be!" Skye shouted. She stormed off into her room and slammed the door shut.

She threw her things aside and she sighed running a hand through her hair.

What a day.
