"First Everything"

Hair in a ponytail.

Solid red polo.

Black jeans.

Raging Bull Red Jordan 5.

Black hoodie.

Chain with his name on it.

That was his fit for the first day. It wasn't anything crazy. He was comfortable and that was all he cared about. He didn't want to do too much, but still wanted to do enough. Maybe as days go by, he'd dress up and be extravagant. Right now, it wasn't necessary. Shai made sure he had all his school supplies in his bag which wasn't much besides his laptop, notebook, binder, pens, and pencils.

His aunt made sure he a lot of supplies as if he was still in elementary school. He remembered exactly what she said when they went school shopping. "Better more than less," she told him as she threw packs of pencils, pens, highlighters, and sharpies in the Staples shopping cart. Shai knew he wouldn't need this much stuff, but he didn't want to break his aunts happiness for school shopping.

Shai checked everything one last time to be sure. He didn't want to be that one kid who forgot something during the first day. He was trying to avoid all the freshmen tendencies his classmates may carry with them. Rushing to class. Being early to class. Not knowing where his class was. And more. He was hoping his first day went smoothly.

Throwing his bag over his shoulders, he grabbed his phone and earphones then left out his dorm. Axel was still slump, so I licked the door behind him. Putting his AirPods in, he went to his music app and played one of his favorite chill songs. Come Through and Chill played through his AirPods at full volume. He put his hands in his pockets and started on his way.

"Pick up the phone, show me it was real. Pick up the phone, show me it was real." Shai mumbled the lyrics, bobbing his head as he walked down the stairs. He wanted to get his exercise in, so he didn't take the elevator.

Yeah I don't wanna put no pressure on ya
I just wanna put a blessing on ya
Since our last undressin' session I'm not really sure if you've been checkin'
I'm progressin' I just heard my songs is poppin' out in Macedonia
And even Serbia I don't mean to burden ya

Exiting his building, he put his hood on his head as the cold hit him suddenly. His schedule for the semester was easy in his eyes. His first class was Math 110 which was Algebra 1 & 2 and Geometry. He knew that wouldn't be hard because he was good at math. After that he had Introduction to Sports Management, Financial Accounting, and last but not least English. He wasn't a big fan of English because of his high school teachers, but he figured college would be different.

Plus, English was only on Mondays and Wednesdays. Being able to see his professors on certain days was a blessing. As he continued on his way to the buildings on the east side of campus, he saw other students walking around. He gave a head nod to a few of the dudes he recognized from the freshmen events. He got through his song and started another just as he reached the building. Walking inside, he turned his music off and looked around. The building was empty so he assumed since he didn't see anyone.

"Room 5," he said under his breath, remembering the room number for his class. He didn't want to have to keep checking his phone, so he memorized the classrooms and buildings. He had it down pack which was a surprise.

He clung to the straps of his bag as he walked down the hall. He saw all the lecture halls that were dark inside. Reaching his classroom, he peeked inside the window and saw it was empty. He looked up and down the hall for any staff, but didn't see anyone. He quickly realized that he was early for class, something he was trying to avoid. Sighing lowly, he found a seat on a bench and used the time for himself.

During the entire week, Shai tried to do something quite ridiculous. And that was calling his parents. He left them voicemails, letting them know what he had going on. In his mind he still thought they didn't know he had left for college. It happened too quickly, so he gave them a pass if they didn't know. They were busy, is what he thought all the time when they didn't answer his call. It wasn't like it was false. They were famous, so they had a lot of events happening at once.

He didn't want to always make that excuse for his parents, but he couldn't help himself. Going to moms contact, he stared at the picture he was using of her. It was the picture he took when they went to his dad's basketball game. For once, Shai was actually smiling in a picture. If he could remember, he was maybe six or seven at the time. He was young and was overall excited to be seeing a basketball game in real life. During that time, he still adored his father.

It was the opposite now. Pressing the call button, Shai listened to the ringing. It rung once. It rung twice. It rung three times. It rung four times. Voicemail instantly. He listened to his mom voice. Even though it was over the phone, hearing her made Shai relax. He loved his mothers voice with all his heart. It was raspy and low-toned. It also had a sense of smoothness to it, especially whenever she sung.

Shai could remember the lullabies she would sing to him when he was a baby. He always wondered why his mother decided to be a model instead of a singer. Yes, she was stunning in the looks department. Brown skin, sharp jawline, almond eyes, a phenomenal smokey eye. Her body was that of supermodels as well, skinny with little bit of thickness. An athletic body some would call it. She worked the runway and even the streets. She strutted everywhere she walked. Turned heads in every room she steps into.

She had men drooling all over her. She was a woman. But, whenever she opened her mouth to sing roses grew in the garden. Birds sung along with her. Chills went down Shai's spine. He listened to her vocals. The low pitches. The high pitches. Even the ones in between. She could be an alto and a soprano. He went into a daze whenever she sung. It was as if he could visualize the lyrics, feel them going through his body and settling in his mind. It made him happy. It soothed him. It made him want to lay in bed and stay there all day with her singing in the back.

That was how his mothers voice made him feel. That was how his mother in general made him feel. If only his mother could see the type of love Shai had for her then she wouldn't stay in a broken relationship. However, she was grown. Shai was grown as well. His mother made a decision and he had to accept it.

He came out his daze once he heard the beep sound. It was time for him to do his voicemail. Actually saying something was the difficult part.

"Uhhh, hey mom," he began. "It's your son, Shai..." he paused, scratching the back of his head.

He continued, "I'm calling because I wanted to say hi. I've been gone for a good week or so now and I wanted to let you know what's been going on. I started my classes today...they seem easy for the most part. I'm actually sitting here waiting for class to start. I came early which isn't a surprise really."

He looked down the hall seeing an older woman coming down. She gave him a smile and he returned a small one.

"Umm, I'm sure you're busy which is why you didn't answer. I'll leave you to whatever business you're taking care of. Uhhh, I love you." he concluded his voicemail, hanging ip afterwards.

The older woman he saw opened his classroom door. Before stepping in, she looked back at him with a huge smile on her face.

"Are you here for Math 110?" She questioned. Her voice high pitched like Tiffany doll from Bride of Chucky.

"Yes...yes, I am." he answered.

"Don't you think you're a tad bit early?" she chuckled, making Shai tuck in his lips.

"Yeah, I know. Sorry." he apologized for some reason.

The lady shook her head. "No worries. Come in." she told him, entering the classroom. Shai got up and followed her inside, seeing the set up of the class.

There were no desks. Just seats with a small flap beside it for writing on. The seats started high then descaled as you went down. In the front of the class was a big screen and a desk. He watched as the woman walked down the stairs to the front. He was a little confused on what to do, so he found a seat in the corner.

"What's your name hon?" the lady asked.

"Shai...Shai Carter," he answered. He saw how quick she looked back at him. The same smile on his face that was slowly starting to become weird.

"Shai Carter?" she questioned and he nodded his head. "Are you in any way related to that basketball player? What's his name?"

She snapped her fingers, trying to remember. "Sean Carter!" she exclaimed once she had it.

"Are you?"

Shai hesitated to answer since he knew how this was going to go. If he answered yes then she was going to act a certain way towards him. And he can't really say no because well...that was a lie. If you searched up Sean Carter on Google, Shai and his mothers name would show up. It wasn't hidden. Unfortunately, his dumb self answered anyway.

"Yeah," he answered.

"Hmm, that's very interesting. You know the both of you look very alike. You could pass for twins..." she paused, leaning back on her desk and staring directly at him. He noticed her batting her eyelashes which made him uncomfortable.

"How old are you?" she questioned.

"18."

"Old enough."

Shai tucked in his lips, not knowing what to say to that. He kept quiet and went on his phone. He knew this year was going to be something.

"Everyone come in and take a seat. We have a lot to get to, so let's not waste time!" Professor Herbert shouted as he wrote on the blackboard aggressively.

Entering the classroom, Shai looked around for a seat. He was late to class since he had a hard time finding it. Because of that, he missed out on the seats in the back of the class.

"Hurry up and find a seat!" His professor raised his voice, looking over his shoulder.

Shai nodded his head, moving his feet. He found a seat in the second row and settled down. As he finished writing on the blackboard, Professor Herbert turned to face his class. A frown was plastered on his face seeing majority of his students had sat towards the back. His first five rows were somewhat empty with only three or four students in it. He shook his head, letting it go for now.

"Alright! Welcome to English 101. As you all may know this is a required course that you must pass. This is not your regular high school setting, so don't expect me to be lenient towards you all." He began, scanning his crowd. He could see how bored the students were.

Did he care? Not at all. He was an English teacher for Christ sake. All English teachers were boring.

"If your other teachers didn't inform you then I will. We use Canvas-" he hit his stick against the blackboard under the word Canvas. "-to do our assignments, discussion boards, quizzes, etcetera." he continued.

"You will be required and expected to check canvas for all your assignments on your own timing. I will not be your babysitter and inform you what assignments are near due. You're all grown, so act like it. Understand?" he questioned.

Shai looked around the classroom, wondering if anyone would answer. Nothing was said. He put his attention back on his professor who continued talking like he wasn't ignored. Shai tired to listen to everything he was saying and processed it. His professor talked quickly and at times he sounded like Donnie Yagabodigity from The Wild Thornnerry's. He got out of his thoughts and went back to listening.

"...books will not be provided, so get them asap. We'll be starting our reading of 1984 Wednesday, so get your book as fast as you can. I will not be giving out any form of paper. Take that into consideration because I will not help you. If there aren't any questions, let's get started on our first assignment of the semester."

The class groaned. Professor Herbert turned around to the blackboard. He grabbed his chalk and began writing.

"You're first assignment is an essay..." Herbert began. "It's a personal essay telling everyone who you are. The essay can be however you want it to be, but you must incorporate these few things. I want to hear your likes and dislikes. Your dreams, goals, and aspirations. Your background. Greatest accomplishments."

"There's plenty of things you can tell me and your peers, so please do so. Your essay must be at a minimum of 4-5 pages. There's no word limit. Times New Roman 12-point font. Double-spaced. If said requirements aren't reached, fifteen points will be taken off instantly. The essay part is half of your grade. The other half will be you reading it in front of the class. Yes, we present in front of everyone. If there's no questions, you may begin." Herbert finished writing on the board.

A few students groaned again, pulling out their laptops. Shai did the same, not sure why some of his classmates were irritated. Though he didn't like English that much, he did enjoy writing. Maybe because he spent his high school writing tweets, journal entries, and even school new articles about sports. His extracurricular activities list was a long one. Logging into his laptop, he went to his docs and got started. He couldn't help but check the time in the corner.

He took a deep breath realizing he was about to be in here for a good hour and a few more minutes. Now, he understood the groaning.

"Chicken sandwich or a cheeseburger? Pizza? Hoagie? Nah, chicken sandwich." Axel spoke to himself, scanning the eateries.

Class was finally over. It was two in the afternoon and everyone was out and about. First of classes was a breeze to some while others it was hard. To Shai it was in the middle. He found his classes well, but the actual class itself was hard. He wasn't sure what to expect stepping on campus, but it sure wasn't what he experienced today.

Standing in line with Axel, both boys were trying to figure out what to eat. They were in the student center—which was filled—looking for something to eat. Shai decided on getting good ole Chick-Fil-A while Axel was having a hard time choosing.

"Whatchu getting bruh?" Axel questioned, looking back at Shai.

"Chick-Fil-A." He answered.

Axel nodded his head. "Yeah, imma get that too." he finally made up his mind. Shai shook his head, the two of them stepping up in line.

"Aight, anyway, how was the first day homie?" Axel changed the subject, taking his wallet out his bag.

Shai shrugged, "It was something. I feel like my math teacher is gonna try some shit with me though." He spoke up, Axel raising his brow.

"What nigga!" He exclaimed, causing some of the kids to look at him. He apologized to those close to them then put his attention back on Shai.

"What do you mean by that?" he questioned in his normal tone.

"Uhh, so pretty much I told that I was Sean Carter dad which lead to her asking my age. And she made a comment like "old enough" after I said I was eighteen." Shai explained, scratching the back of his head. Explaining it out loud felt weird. Axel's reaction didn't make it any better.

Axel stood there with his mouth wide open, processing what his friend said. "Nigga, what?" he whispered.

Shai nodded his head. "Yup. I might drop out that class to avoid her though. All through class she kept looking at me."

Axel started laughing loudly, making Shai smack his lips. He didn't find anything funny about his teacher acting flirty towards him. He knew he'll receive special treatment that he didn't want. Not to mention, his professor was going to try and get something out of him. Something he never gave to anyone and didn't plan on doing so any time soon. Axel's laughing soon died down. He held his stomach and wiped his face. Shai shook his head, pushing Axel forward as the line moved up.

"That shit isn't funny." Shai told him.

Axel wiped his face again, "Yeah, aight. That shit is funny. It's like one of them events that happen in this LifeTime movies. Next thing you know your professor gon' start stalking you." Axel said, chuckling.

"Whatever," Shai muttered under his breath.

Next up in line, Axel ordered his food first. While Shai waited he thought about what his friend said about his teacher. He squirmed at the thought of an older woman stalking a teenager because of his status. Thoughts filled his head that were disgusting and vivid. He shook them away once it was his turn to order. He ordered his chicken sandwich meal with his large fries and Lemonade. He stepped out of line once he was done and leaned on the wall.

Like always, he looked around the place. He wouldn't help but to scope out his scenery since he was still in shock. He really was in college. It was such a sudden change to him that it was taking him some time to get used to it. It reminded him of the voicemail he left his mother earlier. He hadn't received a call back and was going to cry again later. Axel hit his arm, bringing him out his daze.

"Are you gonna fuck?" Axel questioned, Shai raised his brows.

"My professor?" He asked for clarification and Axel nodded. "Hell no."

Axel laughed. "I expected that answer. I mean I would...what's her name?"

"Miss Blair," answered Shai. "Light skin, straight hair-"

"Big ass? Nipples so hard you can see them through her shirt?" Axel cut Shai off.

"Yeah."

Axel nodded, "Yup, I'd hit. She's fine as fuck and my teacher too. I know if I fail that class, I'll do just about anything to get my grade up." Axel joked but Shai knew that he wasn't kidding.

Shai kept his comments to himself since he didn't have anything positive to say. He pulled out his phone to occupy his attention while they waited. He went to Instagram and the search option. In the search bar, he typed in her username and clicked the profile that showed up. Desdemona aka Dess, the pretty girl he ended up meeting at the party. The same girl who followed him for five years straight. After she left, he wanted to see if that was true and indeed it was.

He wasn't trying to be a stalker, but he stayed on her page for a minute looking at her pictures. He found her pretty Gorgeous was actually a better word to describe her in his opinion. He wasn't trying to be extra either. Though, the campus was big, he hoped to run into her again. He exited her page then went back to his feed.

"Ladies three o'clock," Axel nudged Shai, making him look up. They both turned their heads in the direction of a group of girls coming their way. The one in front stepped to Shai, her two friends behind her.

"I saw you at the party the other night." She said, pointing at him. Shai nodded his head since he remembered seeing her too. He held a small conversation with her that wasn't much besides comparing their outfits.

She had came up to him clowning his fit that night. He wasn't wearing much besides jeans, a Tupac shirt, and air forces. His simple attire wasn't up to par so the young woman told him. That was funny to him since she was wearing a short tube maxi dress. In his opinion, it was basic but he didn't say anything.

"Yeah, I remember you." He told her.

"Good, so let's get together. Here's my number, schedule something for us to do ASAP. I'm not a picky girl, but that doesn't mean you need to be lazy. Cool?" She
