Essence

Staring at my ceiling in silence I go over everything that happened the day before, the interaction surely wouldn't come back to bite me in the ass as I had no intention of seeing any of those boys again. I just had to figure out a way around that, it seemed impossible as one of them lived next door and four of them went to the same school as me. It was a struggle I had to figure out on my own.

Hearing a large grumble interrupt my thoughts I look at my stomach I groan. Still, I had no food located in this house other than the left overs I had been preserving for two whole days due to procrastination. I trot down the stairs to slip on my shoes and grab my keys. While walking out the house and towards my car I found myself looking next door.

Why was I looking over there?

Mentally scolding myself I shake my head releasing it of the thoughts I had about the boys I encountered, and walk to my car in silence.

I sit in the driver's seat thinking for what felt like ever. I groan pounding my filled head on the steering wheel. It seemed as if nothing could get my mind to settle.

I'm just being dramatic... that was his favourite word to call me..every single thing I said I was being dramatic, his words probably seeped into my brain from hearing them for so long. He brainwashed me into thinking so many things that I don't even know what's real or not.

Starting up my car, turning the keys and putting my belt on, I was close to driving off until I see a black car come to a stop in front of the house next door. Neil's house.

It was big, like a mother with a whole soccer team of kids would have. Except stepping out were the same boys that ran through my mind, along with another unfamiliar face.

The unfamiliar face fell onto the grass head first, ouch. No reaction came from the boys as three of them walked to the door gracefully leaving Jacob standing behind the guy nudging him forward into the house aggressively. The car sped away quickly as soon as everyone got out of it.

What are they doing?

I need to mind my own business but I can't drive away now that those two were still there. Impatiently waiting I pounded my head on the wheel again but this time accidentally hitting the horn. Of course.

A loud honk screeched through the area causing me to look up to see if they noticed which of course, the did. Both of their eyes land on me not a moment later. Jacob a little flustered, had his hand by the waistband of his jeans like he was going to grab something. He let go immediately and went to pick up the guy by his arm rather roughly.

He smiled and waved at me innocently, I nervously waved back and gave him a soft smile to ease the awkward air that lurked both inside and outside my car.

He stood there holding the guy like he was his friend linking his arm into his own, they stood there for a few seconds keeping a hard eye on me the entire time. It seemed like he was waiting for me to go so I took that as my chance and pulled out of the driveway.

I'm not going to interfere, it's none of my business, damn it Essence, another thing to overthink.

I pulled up to a small store with bold glowing letters written at the top, half-burnt out and flickering. I pause hesitant to do all my shopping here until the person parked next to me shows up with a cart full of groceries and a smile on her face.

When I enter shock hits me, It was bigger inside than I expected, and had a lot more isles than I assumed. I guess you can't judge a book by its cover.

Swinging my keys around my finger I walk between each aisle with an intention of what to buy. I grabbed three boxes of frozen food and continued on my journey. I wish I knew how to cook, but I never had anyone to teach me. Now I'm shopping for myself and there's no beer involved or any illegal substances for that matter, it was all out of the ordinary, frozen food was the best it was going to get for me.

I turned around a little too fast bumping into a wall..."Ow" not a wall. I opened my narrowed eyes and saw a girl, wow she was pretty.

Her black hair was all over her face and she was on the ground "well that wasn't expected" she muffled out snapping me out of my frozen state, immediately I offered her a hand.

"Shit, I'm so sorry. I didn't see where I was going, are you ok?" I asked worried she'd snap at me but she did the opposite and started to laugh.

I laugh along out of nerves "your face," she said in between laughs "you were so worried" she took a deep breath calming down "I'm completely ok don't worry- oh wow you're pretty" she gawked at me removing the hair from her face.

"Oh- Thank you, so are you" I replied smiling sweetly, suddenly the nerves I had disappeared and her smile grew while she held out her hand "I'm Brianna" I grabbed into her hand taken aback at her strong grip

"Essence," I told her shaking her hand, "I'm sorry for running into you" I sigh out.

"It's fine I've been through worse than a fall"she shrugs as if it was nothing which only sets the conversation on a weird note. The feeling seems to be one sided as she contours to talk, "why didn't you grab a cart?" She says noticing the items I dropped in our collision.

"Oh uhm, I didn't have a dollar on me to put in the cart" I explain embarrassingly gathering everything. When she sees me bend down she follows and starts to help me. "You don't have to help me."

"Here you can use my cart" she placed the items she grabbed into her cart full of groceries that sat a few steps away from us.

"Are you sure," I pause with the rest of my groceries, she rolls her eyes and grabs them from my hand.

"Of course," sensing my still hesitant self she crosses her arms. "I accepted your apology" she raises a brow.

"Wow," I chuckle, "you can't take it away after you already forgave me."

"Says who?"

"Says me," I state matter of factly, she narrows her eyes jokingly before turning around and pushing the cart. "Heyy," I strut after her.

"Come on," she says the moment I catch up to her.

We walk through the store together talking about the most random things that pop into our heads. For the first time since I got to this town I haven't overthought what I was doing.

When we finished shopping Brianna let's of the cart and grabs her phone "give me your phone, we'll exchange numbers and maybe we can hang out one day," she says.

I nodded giving her my phone and grabbing hers "you don't have anyone in your contacts." She states.

I didn't have a phone until a month ago and until then I wasn't allowed to, I had gotten one secretly before only to have it smashed and thrown away right in front of me. It ended up being waste of money that I had been saving up to run away with.

"Yeah it's a new phone" I covered it up and noticed she didn't have that many either "neither do you."

She laughed nervously "Yeah, overprotective brother. I'm homeschooled so I don't have many friends" I gave her a small nod, giving back her phone before saving my contact name as "Ess"Β  I figured it was easier than my full name.

"Well now you have a new friend," I said excitedly, she handed me my phone with a grin, I looked at the new contact to see a nickname just like mine, Bri.

I smiled slipping it in my back pocket, she did the same. "Well I have to get home before my brother kills me or tells the other so they both end up killing me, but I'll text you, maybe we can hang out," she said hurriedly and gave me a side hug before running off "bye" I smiled.

"Bye" I yelled back.

Well, she seems nice.

I feel a buzz in my pocket and slip my phone out, reading the message she had just sent me.

Nice meeting you!

She just left how did she text me so soon, laughing I repliedβ€”

nice meeting you as well!
