CHAPTER FIVE
β€” pretty boy β€”

amelia chewed nervously on her lower lip as jonathan drove up hawkins high. emerging from the parking lot were multiple teenagers. girls with stylish clothes, and boys with hairstyles for days. it made amelia feel bad about herself and jonathan, the two having flat, straight hair and plain, boring clothes.

as jonathan drove up to a parking spot, he started explaining to amelia on what to do. "so you're gonna go to the principal's office." he began.

amelia furrowed her brows. "principal? what's a principal?"

at this point, jonathan was fed up with amelia asking stupid questions like that. he felt as if he was talking to a preschooler, and couldn't help but be slightly annoyed by her. but every time he'd turn to her and see those empty, dull eyes, he'd be reminded that the two were raised different ways and were taught different thingsβ€”or not taught anything at all, in amelia's case.

"the head of the school." jonathan ended up answering with a soft nod. amelia nodded understandably as she licked her lips, looking to the front.

"so as i was saying, you're gonna talk to him, and you do your mind..." he pointed to her head. "thingy, and you talk him into letting you attend high school without the right records."

amelia chewed on her lip as she stared at her reflection through the car mirror. "got it?" jonathan asked. she nodded. "god it."

he started rustling around the copies of will's flyers and got a small packet from the back of the car.

her first day of school was pretty special. it is special. but with jonathan and his uninterested tone, she began to think that maybe it isn't anymore... "you make it sound so easy." she mumbled nervously. jonathan sighed softly, "because it could be for you."

jonathan opened his car door and carried the pack of flyers out with him. he glanced at people with wide aware eyes. he heard their opinions just by the looks and giggles they'd give when they stared at him.

amelia stepped out of the car with a head held high. her eyes were glued to the students walking by, whispering about a new pretty face they haven't seen before.

she walked to jonathan on the sidewalk proudly. "jonathan..." she mumbled softly, closing her smile and pushing her hair behind her ear. "what?" he sighed.

"why are my palms sweaty?" she asked with closed lips. jonathan couldn't help but scoff. "it's anxiety." he replied. "i get it every time i come to school, too."

amelia wiped her palms on her dark jeans and continued walking down the parking lot to school with a fake grin. "remember, principal's office." jonathan reminded her as he started walking away. she nodded rapidly and walked into the school as he set the flyers down on a pin wall just outside of the building before coming in.

as she walked into the building, she looked around the school. although the building was like any other normal high school, amelia's never seen such great architecture. she couldn't help but grow a warm smile, realizing that this is her first step of having a normal life.

with a proud sigh and smile, she looked straight and strode across the halls of hawkins high, making her way to the office. as she made it into the main hall, she walked by nancy and barb.

"when alpha particles go through gold foil, they become..." barb read off a card, waiting for nancy to answer. "unoccupied space." the brunette answered.

"a molecule that can–" steve walked up to the pair and snatched the cards away from barb. "hey!" nancy yelled, growing a smile and following steve to his group.

"i don't know, i think you've studied enough, nance." steve sighed. he began going through the cards and scanned them.

"steve–" nancy called. "i'm telling you, you know, you got this. don't worry." steve said genuinely. nancy blushed lightly at the fact that steve knew she was smart, while barb softly rolled her eyes.

"now, onto more important matters." steve began, sliding the cards in his back pocket. "my dad left town on a conference meeting and my mom's gone with him, 'cause, you know, she doesn't trust him."

"good call." tommy h., stated with a nod. "so are you in?" steve finishes. "in for what?" nancy stuttered.

carol chuckled softly, following with a scoff. a silent pause grew between the two, yet the petite girl didn't know what steve was talking about. "no parents? big house?" carol said as she raised her eyebrows. "big party?" nancy guessed. "ding, ding, ding!"

tommy began laughing. "it's tuesday." nancy said steadily as she looked to steve, hoping that he'd understand the fact that her parents might not let her out. "iT'S tUeSdAY!" tommy mocked as he slapped steve's chest. "shut up" steve said quickly. both carol and tommy began laughing.

"come on. it'll be lowkey. it'll be just us. what do you say?... you in or are you out?" he asked, to shockingly both barb and nancy. "um..." nancy muttered. but before she could make up her mind, carol began laughing. "oh, god. look."

the small group turned to see jonathan byers hanging one of will's posters on the poster wall. "oh, god, that's depressing." steve said with a sigh.

nancy remembered her mother telling both mike and her about ms. byers' call yesterday morning. nancy didn't believe it but when she saw jonathan hanging pictures of his brother on the wall... it hit her.

watching jonathan hang will's poster made her picture herself hanging a missing person's flyer for mike. "should we say something?" she suggested with a light shrug. tommy scoffed inaudibly as he glared at nancy with a shaking head. "i don't think he speaks." carol commented.

the petite brunette turned back to see the lonely boy hanging his missing brother's poster. "how much you wanna bet he killed him?" tommy joked. steve clicked his tongue. "shut up." he told him again.

nancy sighed annoyingly as she departed herself away from the group. tommy and carol turned to steve with a shaking head. "why get a good girl?" carol mumbled, trying not let barb hear, but the red head did.

as steve was about to answer with a sneer remark, his eyes got caught on someone walking by them. carol glimpsed at steve, then looking to the girl his eyes were locked on.

the girl strode in with a smile, not a plastered and vague one that anyone can look through. she looked... genuinely happy; so someone looking that joyfulβ€”walking to someone that depressed looking like jonathanβ€”really got their eye.

nancy stopped walking as she saw the raven haired, tanned girl step up to jonathan.

"i did it!" amelia said, showing a paper and squealing. jonathan felt uncomfortable as the eyes from nancy's group still laid on him. him and nancy looked to each other as nancy slowly walked back.

"good." he mumbled, looking back at amelia. amelia knit her brows together, confused on his small tone. she knew he spoke quite softly but not too soft. "what's wrong?" she asked, tilting her head like a child.

"who is that?" steve asked with a soft tone. carol shrugged as her lips continued smacking to her bubble gum. "probably some new bitch for me to hate." tommy laughed harshly at the comment and continued staring at amelia and jonathan. "steve, honestly i wish i knew who she was." carol turned to him with a sharp brow.

steve didn't answer and instead stared at her. although he's only stared at the back of her head, he already wanted her in some kind of way. it was just like her presence got him in a deep trance that he couldn't snap out of.

surprisingly, just as he began to wonder what she looked like, amelia sighed and rested her back against the wall, blowing a raspberry.

and when steve eyes rested on her freckled face, his throat went dry. her chiseled cheek bones and dark chocolate brown eyes sent him into an emotional spiral, making him almost sick... but the good kind. he tried to look away, but he couldn't. his eyes were literally stuck on her.

"do you need help?" amelia asked jonathan, turning her head to him. steve finally could look away, but it turned into a glance when his eyes fell on her again. it was almost impossible for him to turn off that stare. "no.", jonathan replied to amelia.

amelia gazed at him, feeling his emotions from only a foot away. she blinked to the floor and finally, turned to the group.

they were all staring at poor jonathan.

well, expect for one.

amelia's eyes landed on steve. the two locked eye contact, him hoping it'd be longer and ever lasting but it wasn't. it was a simple glance, not showing one sense of emotion from her side of the glimpse.

he felt hurtβ€”how could one feel such pain by someone simply glancing at you?, he thought. a question that he wouldn't ask himself unless he was well... in love.

and that's when steve knew that he was playing himself. but he honestly didn't mind. he felt as if he was on a high when he looked at her.

"are they making fun on you?" amelia turned to jonathan. steve learned to realize that maybe he wasn't attractive to her. he knew his looks were a stepping stone to getting girls. but the charm and personality were the real winner.

jonathan shook his head, gulping at he grabbed another flyer to hang. "are you sure?" amelia asked. he heard the care in her voice. he couldn't help but be reminded of his mother. back when she actually cared about him and will. the two of them and not just one.

"amelia." jonathan called, finally looking up at her. her eyes lit up when their eyes met, happy that maybe he'd be back to the normal jonathan she thought she knew. "they're not mean but..." he licked his lips and glanced away from the noirette. his eyes looked back to the staring group, his sight falling on nancy and slowly traveling to everyone else. he merely noticed steve's long gaze at the new raven haired girl. "they're just not friendly."

amelia blinked at him bluntly. you can say that was it. the iconic amelia stare. her eyes only carried confusion. with a tilted head, she held that puzzled expression as her brows were furrowed yet defined. jonathan glimpsed again at the group but turned back to his sad state of hanging the flyers.

amelia looked to group, watching them all stare at her now. her eyes fell on the petite brunette to the stylish looking girl and freckled faced boy. and just when her eyes landed on steve, his heart fluttered wildly again. the solid stare that lasted for more than a second made his breathing stagger. he didn't know what grip she had on him.

it was almost as if she was controlling him.

amelia sighed, still looking at steve but then quickly shot to jonathan. steve wanted her to stare. he wanted her to be infatuated with him as well as every girl in hawkins... but she, out of all of them, wasn't.

"look, i'm gonna talk to them." amelia began. she saw him gulp, softly nodding. "a–and you go find your dad." this time, jonathan nodded assuredly. "okay." he said softly, hiding a choke behind the word. amelia nodded and patted his shoulder.

"have a good day." she smiled faintly. he did too, yet she wouldn't count it as a smile at all. it wasn't real.

she walked away from jonathan, making the group stutter and grow tense as they noticed the dark head walk up to them. "hey." she grinned, showing her white pearls for teeth. carol ignorantly rolled her eyes to tommy as he charmed, "hi."

nancy didn't even bother to glance at the new girl as her gaze was set in stone at jonathan. without excusing herself, she left the group and approached him.

"i–i'm amelia." she slightly stuttered. steve caught on to her nervousness. the rest of the group stood silently, all holding a quiet judgmental stare. even barb, finding her fashion sense kind of trashy. carol held knives for eyes, thinking the same thing. also the fact that she was fat in places that she knew tommy would like.

amelia looked to all of them, scared of what to do next. so she did the obvious. "um," amelia cleared her throat and pulled out her schedule from her zipped, maroon sweater. carol scoffed at how there was cotton rolls on the old clothing. "do any of you guys know where room C106 is at?" amelia finally said.

"it's on the other side of the school." carol spat with a smirk. steve finally tore his gaze from amelia and glared at carol. amelia blinked blankly at her, rejecting the answer. she knew she was lying. "if i were you, i'd be heading over there right now. you wouldn't wanna be late, would you?" amelia heard the temper in her tone, making her not want to bother with the lie. "th–thank you."

she walked away from group, giving her fleeting look to steve. impressionably, he seemed to be the only person that has brought her comfort, other than jonathan. but his sudden depart and mood swing made her second guess. steve's eyes followed, later his body. "steve, where you goin'?" tom asked. "somewhere."

amelia looked up from her paper, seeing students talk with each other in the halls of hawkins high. she left the main hall, seeing more people around her age. she noticed what the girls looked like. all with either curled blonde hair or light brunette hair that was wavy. none with her piercing dark, black, straight boring hair. she sheepishly pushed her hair back and continued walking to her class.

when she felt the confidence to maybe talk to someone, she felt a light tap on her shoulder. she turned to the person behind her.

the guy with the pretty brown eyes.

"uh," steve's words left his mind as soon as they locked eyes once again. his throat grew dry as she smiled softly at him. she was joyful that he approached. amelia stood with a small smile, waiting for him to speak. "um..." he blinked at her, licking his lips.

she couldn't help but giggle at the gaze he held. it reminded her of a child's gaze. "hi?" amelia held her hand out. reading self help books gave a little sense with how to get someone professionally. steve glanced at her hand and held his hand out. "hi."

they touched hands, feeling an internal shock. "ow." he said under his breath, pulling his hand back. amelia looked down to her hand with a small raised brow. "i–i'm sorry." she apologized with a soft scoff, sheepishly pulling her arm back.

steve began chuckling with a shaking head. "it's fine." he furrowed his brows. "why would you be?" he asked. amelia chocked on her words before she was gonna speak. she just smacked her lips and wore a closed smile. "nevermind." she said with a giggle following. steve chuckled too, admiring her awkward smile.

he stood for a minute, slowly crawling back into that stare that she began noticing. "um..." amelia glanced away. "i'm gonna go find my class..." steve began shaking his head as he followed her. "i'm sorry. uh, i'm steve." he stuttered. she couldn't help but a grow a bigger smile. a guy who actually wants to get to know her grabbed her attention. "steve harrington."

"amelia." she grinned. "amelia cruz." he nodded slowly. "that's a nice name." steve mumbled, still holding that admiration. "thanks." she smiled, looking up to him as she pushed her hair behind her ear. "steve is too."

he scoffed as he playfully threw a hand up. "no, it's uh, pretty common."

"but still is very pretty." amelia stated, finally not walking anymore. the two stopped walking, steve growing slightly confused. and amelia read it in his face. she pointed to the door behind him, c106 printed on the door. he turned and chuckled. "yeah, sorry."

amelia shook her head, wearing her stupid smile. "it's fine.", she laughed. "but your friendβ€”the girlβ€”led me to the wrong room, so..."

steve furrowed his brows. "carol? oh, she's uh, yeah don't talk to her. she's a bitch." amelia didn't know what that word meant but she's for sure heard jonathan's mom yell that word out before.

"oh..."

"yeah, we're not gonna talk to her." steve stated. amelia chuckled. "we?" he nodded and looked away. "yeah, we." amelia knew he was playing as she heard the sarcasm. with a shaking head, she looked into the classroom, seeing a teacher talk in the front of the class.

"so uh, lia" that name caught her attention. "lia?" she repeated. steve froze in a light utter. "people don't call you lia?" he asked. amelia lightly shook her head. "i mean–"

"do you not want be called that?" he asked, sounding as if he did something wrong. and she heard the concern in his voice, making her laugh. "no. it's fine." she giggled, covering her mouth. "no one's just ever called me that."

"well i'm glad to be the first." steve said. amelia nodded cooly with a smile. "yeah..." the two just stood in front of each other. steve looked at her in a different way. a way that this time, amelia didn't feel slightly weirded out by. "so uh, lia, where are you from?"

amelia froze with her brows raised. "um..." she quickly licked her lips and looked away. "i'm from... new york." she said slowly.

steve furrowed his eyebrows as he put his hands in his pockets. "why'd you leave new york?" he asked her. amelia hasn't really thought out of a plan so she had to wing it. "uh..." she chewed on her lip as she thought. she thought of a million excuses but not one was good enough. "i–its complicated." she stuttered, trying to sound sure. and it worked since steve nodded. "maybe we can talk about it sometime."

amelia giggled, actually scoffing. "yeah. sure. definitely." steve smiled at the small tone of sarcasm. "i'm being serious!" he said with a grin.

amelia nodded, still holding that closed smile. "mhm. yep. cause you'd love to hear a girl's story."

he clicked his tongue. "come on." he playfully shoved her, making her start to feel warm from her face. "'course i do."

she laughed carelessly, looking to him. and that was it. the look that he wanted from her since he laid eyes on her. that look made him sure that he had a shot. "look, i'm throwing some lame get–together tonight. you should totally come."

amelia furrowed her brows. "what's a get–together?" she asked. unlike jonathan, he didn't break out into a laughter. "of course. you're from new york. you only have parties and gala's." he said with a grin.

amelia chuckled lightly as she didn't know what a gala was. "it's like a party except it's way smaller. and uh, i want you to properly meet my friends."

by friends, he meant the staring group. but amelia didn't think of them at that moment. she just wanted to talk with steve. "uh, yeah. i'll, uh, ask if i can go." she mumbled. he nodded and smiled. "great."

"great." they both just stared at each other again with his nerves spiking up with the fact that she's actually looking at him that way.

"i think i should get to class." steve suggested, finally dropping that gaze behind his meaningful eyes. amelia scoffed and nodded with a smile. "yeah.
