December 2019

Airport

It was mildly crowded in the premises of the Maharana Pratap airport of Udaipur. People were either seen checking in or out of the airport. Same way, Monami checked in along with her family who insisted on bidding her an adieu. Thankfully, they had the same terminal or else it wouldnโ€™t have been possible for everyone to be there.

After doing the necessary works before flight, everyone took a sit in the waiting area. Monami was busy going through certain details on her phone, although nothing much was shared in detail since, phones can never be trusted no matter what, while Deepak and Juhi were time and again taking a peak at their daughter. Vedant wasnโ€™t there since his phone went off.

When Vedant came, he trudged towards Monami and cleared his throat before patting her shoulder, catching her attention. She raised her eyebrows, looking at him. โ€œDi woh...โ€ Vedant started but then he gestured towards a particular direction.

Monami was not expecting the sight in front of her. There was standing the Shergill family in the direction her brother pointed, talking to her parents. There was just one person who was missing and by observing keenly, she could make out that it was Param. She again looked at Vedant in confusion.

โ€œActually Di, Atul uncle called Papa that theyโ€™ll be coming early too, to see you off.โ€ Vedant cleared and it made Monami feel touched.

The brother sister duo went towards where everyone was standing and Monami greeted them. Atul patted her head saying, โ€œI know youโ€™ll be absolutely fine, soldier. Come back safe.โ€ Monami nodded at him with a soft smile.

Barkha too took her in a side hug muttering, โ€œTake care and be back, safe.โ€ Monami reciprocated to her the same what she did to Atul.

โ€œAunty kahi jaa rahi hai kya? Jo sab unko aise hug karke kuch kuch bol rahe hain?โ€ Baby could not understand. She then remembered something that made her even more confused, โ€œLekin mumma aapne toh bola tha ki hum sab saath mein jaayenge.โ€ She looked at Barkha.

(Is aunty going somewhere that youโ€™ll are hugging her and whispering something?) (But mumma, you told me that we all will be going together.)

Monami could not help but smile at cherubic faced innocent doll who stood in front of her. She looked at Barkha and blinked her eyes as if conveying that sheโ€™ll answer to it. She knelt down before Baby, โ€œBaby, beta aunty ko na thode bad people se fight karna hain, isiliye woh tumhare saath nahi aa sakti. Lekin hum na bohot jaldi milenge vaapis.โ€ She assured her at the end. She then turned her head and looked at Vedant and signed him something with her eyes to his bag and he understood and gave what she asked for. She again looked at baby after grabbing a handful of chocolates from her brother. She held her little palms in her hands and gave her the chocolates, making little oneโ€™s eyes gleam in ecstasy.

(Baby, Kiddo, aunty has to fight some bad people that is why she cannot come with you. But we will meet soon, again.)

โ€œAap na tab tak yeh khaiye, lekin zyada nahi.โ€ Monami told baby sweetly before adding,ย  โ€œAur ek secret batau?โ€ She gestured the little figure in front of her to come closer and the little one did.ย  โ€œVed Bhaiya ke paas aur bhi hain.โ€ She softly whispered making baby a little more happy. Baby kissed her cheeks with utmost joy, โ€œThank you aunty and all the best.โ€

(You eat these till then, but not too many.) (Shall I tell you a secret?) (Ved Bhaiya has many more.)

After watching this sweet interaction, all the members of the both families were full of smiles. At that moment, Barkha wanted to correct Monami and say that she is not just an aunty anymore, but now officially the chachi of her daughter but she held herself back and refrained from saying anything since this was not the right time to do so, especially amidst all these chaos with which she was surrounded with.

Monami looked at the smart watch that was clasped on her wrist and she knew that there are hardly a few minutes left before thereโ€™ll be the announcement of the flight. Barkha and Vedant both saw this and exchanged a look that clearly meant to give a few minutes before departing, to Karan and Monami.

Barkha and Vedant excused themselves along with Karan and Monami and lead them to a bit calm space and left from there. They both stood there in silence not knowing what to say. Monami looked at the man in front of her and said, โ€œYou see Karan there might be many of these incidents wherein Iโ€™ll have to leave just like that.โ€ She inhaled a deep breath before proceeding, โ€œYou still have a chance to think about it before confirming anything.โ€ She smiled at him softly.

Karan was definitely not pleased with what she said but he also knew where it came from. He simply shook his head before looking into her eyes and said a bit authoritatively, as if he had a right over her, โ€œYou have to be back, safe and sound.โ€ย  Then softly holding her right hand in his left one, his eyes never leaving hers, he muttered in a soft but clear voice, โ€œTake care.โ€

There was something so beautiful about this whole moment that took place in between them and it opened a gate for something new. Monami was soaked in the wave of tranquillity that Karan created with his words and gestures.

Again, in his close proximity, she could not clear the clutter of her thoughts that were in her mind since that call in the afternoon because the moment he took hold of her hands, all she could feel was serene; in his presence, in his warmth.

Their moment was broken by the first announcement of the flight and they took steps away from each other and Monami made her way towards where everyone was standing, Karan following her. She quickly hugged her parents and touched their feet, followed by Atulโ€™s and held her brother in her arms before ruffling his hairs and side hugged baby and Barkha and nodded at Karan, which he reciprocated. Then she took hold of her bags and went towards where she was supposed to.

A few hours later,

Pune

As soon as Monami landed, she quickly texted in her family group about her safe landing and as she stepped out of the airport, she settled in the taxi and asked him to take her to the location.
{Mostly in defence forces, a vehicle is always there with the in-charge officer for the senior officers for their easy travel. But Monami is although a part of IAF, she had underwent a training if you could recollect, (Also Iโ€™ve made changes in the first chapter.) where she mentioned Karan about it. So this will further inform you about that. }

The moment Monami reached her location, she ran towards the area where discussion for mission generally took place and saluted the Head Officer of this first ever batch which was formed.

Head Officer, Officer Rawal took his officers in confidence and informed how a three seater plane that went with two more for a regular sortie in the after hours of noon, crashed in the territory of PoK due to the low fuel, network jammers and all. Albeit, all the officers who were seated inside were alive but two of them were gravely injured; luckily one of the three cordless devices they carried with them was in the working condition and the officer who was in a better condition, was able to send the location coordinates to Officer Rawal.

Since the plane crashed in the boundary of PoK, the officers on the other side of the border were on high alert as well and were already looking for the officers, after finding the plane; it wonโ€™t be possible for a longer time that the officers will be able to keep their presence a secret. Hence, the matter was reported to R&AW and the Prime Minister as well. Oh! And the media also got the whiff of the news and the formation of this Special Action Training programme was almost on the verge of getting disclosed.

The meeting was conducted and Officer Rawal started briefing them about the strategy that was discussed in sealed in the meeting. This mission was to be started in the wee hours of morning.

Two officers, officer Monami Mahajan and officer Shastri, who were the Mig 23 flyers, were assigned to distract the patrolling officers from the border and destroy them too, for this rescue Miss was carried along with a mission to knock down the secret location from where the terrorists were constantly triggering the Indian activities of Government and two metropolitan cities of India.

Four planes from Ambala and Amritsar Air Force Stations will be flying too, to make it seem like the random patrolling of IAF. Helicopter officer, Madhvi Barot in the meanwhile will cross the border and the officers sitting in will quickly take the matter in their hands and rescue the officers in the given 6 minute time frame, because if not for those 6 minutes, the end result would be fatal.

Why only 6 minutes? Because the defence and the R&AW system can manage the shutdown of their active system for those 6 minutes; also because the military on the other side of the border will catch the jammers and the activities, if the Indian Officers take even a second more than 6 minutes.

Soon, the officers were ready to go on their very first official mission as team and all they had an oath of rising in victory and safety of their fellow soldiers.

All the designated officers went as per the plan and everything went on smooth but the fighter planes that were to be distracted by our Officer Mahajan and Officer Shastri, were stuck to them like leeches and Officer Shastriโ€™s plane got on low fuel and he had no choice but leave Monami mid way, although Monamiโ€™s condition was same but she had to take the risk and so she did. She literally made those planes chase hers until she soared up and above in sky and then went on to launch the missile on them, when she finally played with their minds as well.

Officer Monami Mahajan was the second last one to reach the ground before the helicopter and as soon the helicopter landed all the officers were waiting on the ground to take the injured officers in the in the base infirmary. When they were given the clean chit about the admitted officers, finally the soldier troop emerged in the joy of beaming first victory.

Coorg

Journey till Coorg was spent in anxiousness and reassurance, all they wanted was to go and watch if there was any news about the mission on which Monami went. Sadly, there wasnโ€™t news except for the fact that some activity took place in the blues of the sky, especially at the frontiers but the Government refrained themselves from commenting anything on it.

Thanks to the hassle and tiredness from the journey, the Mahajanโ€™s and Shergillโ€™s settled themselves in their rooms, although there lingered some sleeplessness but finally they slept until the sun was shining bright up in the sky.

All of them mutually agreed to for brunch in Atulโ€™s room only, so that they can have their meal and even keep tabs on the news, if there was any, since there was no call from Monamiโ€™s end until now. Thankfully, when they turned on the news, all they could fathom was that there was indeed something that took place on the frontier but all that was mere patrolling and nothing else.

Finally when all of them finished their meal, Deepakโ€™s phone went off, it was from his beloved daughter and all he could do was breath in relief and pick it up in beat.

โ€œMonu, baccha theek hai na tu?โ€ Deepakโ€™s state of mind was so clear in these few words and he felt Juhi tapping his shoulder, to which he looked at his wife, who signalled him to put the call on speaker. โ€œMonu, ruk beta, Iโ€™m putting the phone on speaker.โ€

(Monu, are you fine kiddo?) (Monu wait...)

Monami on the other hand was simpering softly. She waited and when her father asked her to continue, she said, โ€œGuys, Iโ€™m absolutely fine. Please donโ€™t take any tension now. Aur abhi aap sabhi log aaraam se enjoy karoge. Okay?โ€ She faked sternness in her voice for the last sentence.

(And you all will enjoy freely now.)

Everyone though were relieved and affirmed her about the same, there was certain someone who was smiling to himself in amusement when he heard the fake sternness in her voice.

Once the call ended, all the elders unanimously decided that they will tell Monami about her and Karanโ€™s rishta, which is now fixed. They also have to ask both the said people about the dates for the auspicious event and time.

Thanks to elders Karan was not a part of this discussion, because he was not ready for his cheeks to compete with cherries in front of everyone. He and his niece were hanging out in his room when Barkha and Param entered and they shared about all this to him.

When his brother and sister in law vacated his room, he, after finally getting his nerves together, messaged Monami,

โ€œGlad youโ€™re back safely.โ€
- Karan

He hit the send button. But he realised how he goofed up by not even texting a Hi or a hello before sending that text and no matter what, text cannot be deleted for anyone. He literally face palmed himself.ย

He spent the day in anticipation of the reply of text from the recipient of his message and he was not ignored. Monami messaged him in the eventide.

โ€œI am.
Thank you.โ€

Well this was their first interchange of messages, although highly stupid but theyโ€™ll remember it for a long time.

Monami was actually not expecting this text when she switched on her phone after completing all the formalities from her side; a warm feeling coated her.

Finally after the stressful morning and some lazing around that day, all of them then explored Coorg, taking in whatever the beauty of nature was offering them. It was a great break, after a tiring wedding and more than that it gave them family bonding time. They relished good food, they travelled and more than that they loved the time they spent together, enjoying. Needless to say, it was one of the best times spent together.

Udaipur

When they got back to Udaipur, Mahajanโ€™s made sure to contact Monami at its earliest and told them about Karanโ€™s answer and what both the families have in their mind. Though they never failed to ask about Monamiโ€™s opinion, who said she was okay with what their family and Karan is okay with. Her sibling even teased her for saying this, but she was thinking practically that if Karan agrees to whatever their families are planning theyโ€™ll have to be considerate about Karanโ€™s schedule as well and then Monami will apply for the leave accordingly; although the teasing remark didnโ€™t failed to cover her cheeks in heat, which she was fighting with time and again.

The environment at Shergillโ€™s was no different; they patiently discussed the matters with Karan, face to face. Until now, all he received was tad bits of news from his Bhabhi.ย  He was definitely nervous, as this will be one of the most challenging decisions of and for his life. He knew that he wanted this and he was confident too, but thinking it from the long term perspective, he could feel nervous jitters in his body too.

His father had talk with him and assured him about all the possible positives and the challenges they could face and even told him about what Monami said to her parents and asked his son to take some time and let him know about his answer the next morning.

The next day arrived sooner than expected and the answer from Karan spread a wave of bustling happiness in both the families. The elders of the families visited the Priest for the auspicious beginning of the new journey of their kids. The priest took his time and told them about the best time, as per their stars. They could either get married in early February or else theyโ€™ll have to wait for the next yearโ€™s December.

The parents had a conversation with their children and explained them the whole matter, and after some discussion, inputs, chaos and consent, it was decided that theyโ€™ll be having a February wedding, the selected day, which was hardly some 40 days away.

On the day this date was finalized, both the man and the lady were filled with thoughts, of how all this changed in a mere span of almost 2 months. It was in October that they both agreed to see the prospects for the marriage and in December they met, they agreed and they fixed the forever.

Monami took the initiative and dropped a text to Karan, the reasons being two. First she wanted to know about him and his consent and second she wanted to give him a little more insight into her career point as of now, since it was necessary. It was also important because then sheโ€™ll have to submit a leave permission letter to the head office for a month as well. Well, a month was the maximum she could afford so yeah.

So finally after a lot of debate she texted Karan.

โ€œHey, how are you?
I wanted to ask you something.โ€

After sometime, she received a notification from Karan, who was surprised to see Monamiโ€™s text and took his sweet time to settle on the bed comfortably and replied.

โ€œHi, Iโ€™m all good. What about you?
Yeah, say?โ€

โ€œActually, I wanted to meet you,
Is there any chance we can do so?
Like do you have any match in Pune?โ€

โ€œOkay... all good?
No, I donโ€™t have any match
In Pune. But I do have a
series in Mumbai.
Will it be possible for you
to make it over there?โ€

โ€œYes, everythingโ€™s alright.
It is possible.
Date?โ€

โ€œGreat. O
8th Jan? Iโ€™ll send you the
Address.โ€

โ€œDone.โ€

After that they didnโ€™t know what to talk about and Monami was feeling reluctant to end abruptly like this so she wished him Good night, getting back the same.

While on the other hand Karan was wondering about what could be the matter, but deciding that itโ€™ll be in front of him soon he just shut his phone and eyes both, slipping into his peaceful slumber. Monami too, did the same.

The celestial bodies of the night were happy glittering placidly, anticipating their meeting and this time in between.
