December 2019

Resort

Days were passing by, amidst all the howling laughter, traditional wedding songs, lip smacking scrumptious cuisines, endless dance with a spice of teasing and pranks here and there. Perfectly the way, one would describe the environment where a wedding is supposed to take place.

The most fun part of weddings that take place in winters is that no matter the weather, people would be dressed up to their best and some would rather gulp in some kaadha and hot beverages to get themselves warm enough to enjoy some moments in their wedding ensembles.

The days with SidSaโ€™s wedding festivities and rituals were rolling in at a pace faster than anybody wouldโ€™ve thought, but isnโ€™t this the case when we are enjoying every minute of the moment we are in.

Well to start with Cocktail, Monami and Karan had their dinner together with some small talks and eye locks in between. Shergillโ€™s did stay for a bit longer and left when the party crowd was about to slip in the mood of probably not remembering anything the next day; they were welcomed and had a great time, for mixing up with people who are extremely fun loving, like the couple that will be wedded soon, vibes are always pleasant.

Bottomโ€™s up was already done in the presence of Shergillโ€™s, but when they left, Monami and Sidharth had a full fledged drinking competition amongst them, which much to latterโ€™s intoxicated dismay, he lost. Monami knew how to carry herself even when you go a little overboard with your drinks, because of her life in force.

Before leaving, Karan made sure to give in to the wishes of the people who admire him and clicked pictures but with a request to not to post them anywhere until a few days, to which they happily obliged.

The following day went in smooth and much to Monamiโ€™s chagrin with a tiring dance rehearsal, because Monami didnโ€™t really liked to dance but she had to give in to the annoying behest of her friends. Basically what the fact was that she was not used to dancing and stuff, her mind was not parallel to her body in this new activity.

It was decided to have a Mehendi function in the morning and Sangeet in the evening, so day hours gave ample of time to all the people for getting hennafied and practice for the evening as well. Indeed it was hell tiring but everyone enjoyed it to its last bit.

By the eventide, the place that was bedecked in morning for Mehendi, was quickly transformed into sparkles of some fairy and disco lights, cameras set up in front of the stage to capture the dances, the stage for the bridegroom was just adjacent to left of the cameras, mouth watering delicacies placed in the backmost part of the openness. People were coming in, all in their most appropriate attires; the Shergillโ€™s had arrived too and were standing with the Mahajanโ€™s who introduced them the Ganjuโ€™s and Dubeyโ€™s.

Soon, the bride and the groom made their presence obvious, along with their tribe and were made to sit on their respective seats, alongside each other. Monami and Vedant were standing near them only, nodding to something that was said to them.

All this while, when Monami was in direct vision of Karan, as usual he could not help but appreciate how beautifully and effortlessly she can do justice to anything she wears.

He felt a tug on the trousers of his suit to which he looked down at the source, who was none other than his favourite human, baby. He raised his eyebrows before kneeling, to match with her height. โ€œHaan baccha?โ€

(Yes kiddo?)

โ€œChachu mai chachi se milne jaau?โ€ Baby asked so innocently, but Karan couldnโ€™t help but fluster at this and looked at his Bhabhi, who was looking at him when he knelt down but she blatantly ignored with a teasing smile and shrugged her shoulders.

(May I go and meet aunty?)

Karan caressed her head affectionately, tucking her few open strands behind her ear, โ€œBaccha woh abhi aapki chachi nahi hain, toh aap unko aunty he bulao.โ€ When he saw that baby was going to shoot another question at him, he added, โ€œPlease.โ€ And then he continued in a soft tone, โ€œAur woh abhi aayengi thodi der mein idhar, aap tab mil lena unse?โ€

(Kiddo, she is not your uncleโ€™s wife yet, so call her aunty only.) (Moreover, sheโ€™ll be coming here in sometime, you meet her then.)

While all of this was happening, Deepak had signalled his daughter when she was climbing down the stairs from the stage, to come where they all were standing. So Monami nodded in agreement and came along with Vedant.

Monami greeted everybody and after a few minutes, the family members of Sidharth and Sanjana left towards other guests. From the corner of her eyes, Monami saw how sweetly Karan was talking to his niece, making her lips curve into an almost unnoticeable smile.

Seeing Monami standing in his close vicinity, Karan also stood up and slightly tugged on the coat to remove the creases. Karan was left again in a pleasant bewilderment when he saw her so close, looking like an enchantress in a saree.

Monami was accoutred in an elegant lavender shade- subtly sequined saree, paired with medium length diamond earrings, with a ring in a finger and hair left open in soft curls. She was a walking statement, unaware of the attention she demands.

When finally they caught each otherโ€™s eyes, they deftly passed each other a smile of acknowledgement and Monami cautiously checked him out too.

Karan was dressed in a bottle green suit; with an off white high neck t-shirt underneath, with perfectly gelled hair.

(The dress board is at the end.)

Their attention was diverted towards Atul when he said, โ€œChalo in sab mein yeh acchi baat hui ki Monami ne mujhe Shergill sir se uncle tak ka promotion de diya.โ€ To which all of them chuckled except Monami, who flushed in slight embarrassment.

(But one good thing happened in all this, that now she finally gave me a promotion from Shergill sir to uncle.)

While all were laughing, Baby was confused at this and she pouted, but then she trudged towards Monami and this caught everyoneโ€™s attention including hers as well.

โ€œHi baby. Kaise ho baccha?โ€ Monami knelt down and asked tenderly.

(How are you kiddo?)

โ€œIโ€™m good aunty.โ€ Baby gave a toothy grin. โ€œKya mai aapse kuch puch sakti hoon?โ€ She innocently questioned, making Monami look at everyone once, who were watching this interaction keenly before nodding with a sweet smile of her, โ€œOf course sweetheart.โ€

(Can I ask you something?)

โ€œMai aapko chachi kyu nahi bula sakti? Chachu ne toh bataya he nahi, unhone ne toh bola ki sirf aunty he bulau. Aisa kyu?โ€ Baby asked in confusion, which made Monami and Karan flush and the latter scrunched his face and mentally groaned, they both were absolutely not prepared for this googly which bowled them out; they were not meeting anyoneโ€™s eyes, which were filled with nothing but mirth and their lips were sealed in forcefully so as to not burst out in laughter.

(Why can I not address you as Chachi; Uncle didnโ€™t say anything except for telling me to inscribe you as Aunty only. Why is this so?)

Monami didnโ€™t know how to respond to this innocent question, so she just looked at Barkha, who saw the misery of the young woman in front of her and decided to help her out of it. โ€œBaby, come here beta. Iโ€™ll tell you the reason and cโ€™mon lets go and have some soup.โ€ Barkha took hold of her daughterโ€™s hand and moved out of the circle.

Gradually, everyone left the circle, giving the duo their privacy. โ€œHey! Iโ€™m so sorry for Babyโ€™s question; I didnโ€™t know that sheโ€™ll ask you this.โ€ Karan said, softly rubbing the pad of his forefinger on his right eyebrow.

At this, Monamiโ€™s cheeks were again coated in the shade of a primrose, which made his cheeks a bit tinted too. โ€œUh, itโ€™s okay.โ€

A few minutes went by, without saying anything, in the comfortable silence among them and music, surrounding them. They were looking mindlessly at the dance performances in front of them. But the moment Monami opened her mouth, โ€œYou sa...โ€ , she was interrupted by the call of her name from the host on stage, asking her to come near the stage, for it is her turn after the current one.

Though this made Monami a bit anxious and this made Karanโ€™s eyes widen up a bit in surprise. He turned to look at her, the same moment she turned and before she could say something, โ€œAll the best. Go on. Iโ€™ll wait here.โ€ He said with a calming smile and she returned the favour and went off.

Karan saw her scrambling towards her friends and they had a small talk before she went towards the stage. He wanted to see how this stunner will take over the stage.

After the dance, which was first a solo and then with her friends, the three of them were left teary eyed, because by the time their dance ended, there was an AV of three of them that held together some of their most cherished moments. Sidharth was standing with his arms on the shoulders of his girls. The AV playing and the trio watching it, it was such a beautiful moment and without a doubt, it was captured too.

Monami walked towards Karan, after clearing her heart and when reached near him, he gave her a sweet smile and blinked at her and she nodded. This conversation happened so silently that they didnโ€™t even realised that they can have a talk wordlessly as well.

After staying silent for some time, Karan attempted to break the ice by having a small talk and he was successful when he questioned. โ€œYou donโ€™t really enjoy dancing, do you?โ€

Monami gazed at him with confusion lacing in her eyes, โ€œWhy do you say so?โ€

โ€œIt was pretty evident when you glared at your friends before performing and after it too.โ€ Karan mused, confident. He refrained himself from commenting anything on her dance, knowing he would be entering into unchartered waters.

โ€œYouโ€™re quite observant.โ€ Monami mumbled, impressed; ignoring that she could feel his eyes on her, time and again, making Karan a bit flustered since he somehow revealed that he was indeed looking at her.

"I'm sorry, I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable." Karan sincerely wanted to know this.

"No you didn't." Monami blinked at him.

Then finally he asked the question that was bugging him since their morning meet up. โ€œBy the way, Iโ€™ve searched a few things and even asked papa about the security and privacy you guys need to maintain on social platforms. He said that undoubtedly you guys donโ€™t have a permission to operate a social media account, but as far as I know, there is no restriction if someone else posts a picture with you.โ€ Karan paused and looked at Monami, to find her listening to him attentively and although she understood where this conversation was going but she let him complete. But what cannot be ignored was also a fact that he took efforts to know a few things more about her life from his end.

โ€œThen when we met at FS, why did you say that even I will not be able to post something about you in clear mentions?โ€ Karan was addled.

โ€œKaran, I was and still am a part of IAF and had it been limited to that, there would have been no issues. Although I cannot reveal anything at the moment but just hang on to it.โ€ Monami paused and before continuing again, she got a nod from Karan. โ€œActually, I am a part of a special action force, which is one of its kind and has been formed for the very first time. You must be knowing, that just one move and we can face severe repercussions of our actions. So we want to keep everything guarded, at least till we can.โ€ When she finished Karan agreed with understanding.

โ€œMoreover, this is one of the major reasons that even after a lot of endeavours of media, we havenโ€™t revealed most part of this new formation and the defence have kept its lips sealed about the names of the soldiers as well.โ€ Monami added the information, she felt she should.

โ€œGot it, Indian media can be a pain in a.. uhm. Really bad.โ€ Karan desisted himself when he realised what he was going to say in flow. Although they are grown ups and it is way too normal, he felt that there should be a certain level of comfort between them before he or they can use these words a bit more freely.

Monami was amused hearing him and a small smile was slightly crept up at the corner of her lips, but she just nodded.

Finally, they were on the topic they settled on for the letter โ€œSโ€, and Karanโ€™s genius mind suggested that they should talk about the thing which theyโ€™ve ever stole. In return he was blessed with a raised eyebrow, โ€œTumhe pata hai na ki tum chori ki baat kar rahe ho, woh bhi ek officer se?โ€

(You know right that youโ€™re talking about stealing, that too from an officer.)

โ€œOh ho, dekho โ€œSโ€ se sweet bhi ho sakta tha, lekin inn sab ke liye humare paas bohot waqt hai, toh kuch aisa share kar lete hain jo shayad ab hum kabhi na karein?โ€ Karan tried on with the intelligent reason but nonetheless Monami agreed.

(Oh ho look from โ€œSโ€, there can be sweet too but for all of that we have a lot of time. But for now let us share something which we might never do again.)

Unknowingly, Karan stated their long term togetherness and Monami sealed it. They were moving towards a beautiful forever, by making these memories along the way.

So now, they both did share their experiences. Karan was left in fits of laughter and amusement, when he heard Monami stating how she Sidharthโ€™s chocolates in school and how it continued for a few weeks until he caught her. And the reason she did so was because her buddy used to bring those tempting tamarind chocolates and teased her, after sharing one with her and keeping the whole lot for either for himself or went on to share with his other friends. And when Sidharth found out the culprit, they had a quarrel which lasted for 3 days, a record that is not broken till today; her parents chided her but Sidharthโ€™s parents made it a tradition to gift her box, every month until her taste grew over it.

Monami was obviously embarrassed over this and then she tried to be as nonchalant as she could be. โ€œHaan ... toh theek hai na, mai bacchii thi.โ€ Her embarrassment was so clear with the way she looked everywhere but him, which is so unlike her.

(Alright, I was just a kid back then.)

When Karan didnโ€™t cease his guffawing marathon, Monami narrowed her eyes at him. โ€œNow if youโ€™re done, itโ€™s your turn now.โ€

Unknown to her own self, Monami looked forward to this time of the day when they would share such stuff about each other and Karan; he used to literally rummage his brain to think of the possible and out of the box words on which they can share something. He literally wanted to know the shades of Monami which were now veiled and oh, he so looked forward to hear her laugh or just be with her.

Karan sobered up a bit, but it was absolutely useless, since when he was narrating his he was already a laughing mess, almost with utmost decency he could manage and not gather attention.

He told the anecdotes of the days when he was growing up and how he used to steal some raw mangoes and berries, with his brother, from the tree in their neighbourhood or sometimes in the park which was under the ownership of one of his neighbours as well. He told the woman beside him about the current sneaky adventures which seldom took place now.

Monami was tickled pink when Karan went on further telling that it was his father, Atul, who had taught them such stuff, and how big of a cheerleader he was and he still continues to be. But Monami didnโ€™t miss the longing in his voice when he fondly said about how his mother used to scold them because of their shenanigans and how other people in their locality complained about their antics.

They spent some moments in tranquillity with each other when Karan softly looked at her and sensing his gaze or if it was just coincidence; she turned her head to look at him. โ€œYouโ€™re soulful.โ€

Just two words and Monamiโ€™s cheeks flared up like always, when she is in certain someoneโ€™s vicinity. But yet again, what caught her attention was that he didnโ€™t say beautiful or something for her looks, but he rather complimented her for what she is and she was touched. She didnโ€™t know what to say or how because no word she says now, will be able to she felt.

Monami just blinked her eyes at him and looked at him with a question to which he slightly raised his confused eyes before nodding and she did something she never thought she would do. Hell even Karan didnโ€™t.

Monami dwindled the distance between them, until she felt it was perfect and she softly grazed her fingers in between his palm, entwining their hands.

Karan was looking at her all this while and when he saw her making a move and such that it rendered him tongue tied. He felt the warmth of her palm, slipping into his. He was in awe when he saw her avoiding his eyes but he so wanted to look at them, into them. And as if hearing his thoughts, she looked at him, with eyes that were filled with serenity and then looked away within a few seconds.

They both looked away from each, still holding each otherโ€™s hands in a soft yet firm grip and didnโ€™t made an attempt to pull back until they were supposed to.

This moment, this night, it changed the air around them in a bit warmer and a lot more pleasant way. They were taking baby steps towards their destination, and it was heart warming.
