I've been awake since six o'clock in the morning because of an alert from a pack we are close allies with. They've been having trouble with rogues invading their land and they have asked for some of my pack to help get rid of them for once and for all.

Since helping Cleo take down the rogues that captured Kassian and tortured him, I have little to no sympathy for those who want nothing more than to terrorise others.

Lily says that she's a rogue but she doesn't commit any harm to anyone.

A group of rogues purposely targeting a pack is another problem and it's something that needs to be tackled there and then before things become progressively messy.

I leave the pack house early in the morning with Milo, Jesse and a few other members. I'd like to think that other packs would help us if we found ourselves in a situation like that, so proving our loyalty is the least we can do.

Even Cleo and Kassian join with their closest pack members.

This district really has each other's backs. We all want to support each other and respect boundaries at the same time. None of us show jealousy towards one another because we can all group together if we need, like in this exact situation.

When we arrive there are a lot more rogues than we first anticipated.

There are more of us than them but never have I seen rogues make their own pack like this, using their low status and disgusting minds to create some form of super pack. As if they could outdo multiple packs put together, we all have different strengths.

Blood is shed and wolves die.

I protect my pack as best as I can. They're a lot stronger, faster and braver than I remembered. They must be adapting and forming into their own special species. But they still can't keep up with us.

Jesse has his leg bitten but he's a determined wolf. That's why I thrived when I found out that he's mates with my sister, they suit each other extremely well.

A rouge clamps their canines down in my direction, catching the edge of my cheek and piercing through my skin. I manage to kick them away and rip out their intestines with my jaw, leaving their organs splattered across the forest floor.

We do a recount of pack members when all of the rogues are down, moving bodies and cleaning up their land to help out.

When we agree to head home we are thanked and appreciated by their Alpha, reciprocating that they would do anything to help us in return. That's why I love running my own pack, getting involved with the action and helping out as much as we can.

We get home later into the evening. Even I can't believe we've been out all day.

To say I'm exhausted would be an understatement. We're covered in blood, Jesse's ankle is slowly healing but we had to help him home as the cut is a lot deeper than we originally thought.

When we walk through the front door, our medic team are already taking Jesse to the infirmary to check out his wound. Fran is practically screaming at his punctured flesh but she's told to give them some space so they can inspect properly.

Of course this took my sister a few minutes to digest and she sits with me in the kitchen when I fix myself some water.

Fran chews on her finger and jigs her foot in anticipation for Jesse. She turns to me with her big blue eyes. "Your mate has been asking after you."

My eyebrows raise in surprise as I bring the cup of water to my lips. "She has?"

She purses her mouth and nods. "Yeah, a couple times. Think she's been a bit lost without you."

Well that's news to me. I thought she liked me not bothering her throughout the day.

"Is she in bed?"

Fran hums. "Yeah, she had some dinner. I tried speaking to her but she seemed really anxious."

I frown instantly. "Define really anxious?"

"She was anxious cause you're weren't here, idiot," she rolls her eyes dramatically.

My eyes rapidly blink at her statement. "I see," I nod and down the rest of the water. "I'm gonna go to bed, shower. I'm exhausted."

"Okay, I'm gonna see how Jesse is."

"Don't piss them off down there," I point a finger at her. "I know what you're like, probing and shit."

Fran gasps at my words. "I just want to know if he's okay."

"And also let them do their job, he's in good hands. I promise."

"Fine, goodnight."

"Night," I call and head upstairs.

My arms feel like they weigh a tonne and I cannot wait to wash my body clean of dry blood and dirt, crash head first into my bed with a dreamless sleep.

As I reach the landing a door opens down the hall and I turn my head towards the sound. My eyes collide with Lily as she emerges from her room, she sees me and gasps instantly. Her little bare feet patter the floor as she runs towards me, eyes fixated on my damaged skin.

Unexpectedly she rises up onto her toes and presses her palm to my cheek, brushing her thumb across the mark on my skin.

My whole body is set on fire from her soft touch, we both feel it because I suck in a breath and Lily's hand quivers against my skin.

"Are you okay?" Her pale blue eyes are searching for an answer.

I can physically see her concern in her stance and that has me feeling some type of way.

She pulls her hands away like she's snapping herself out of a trance, her hand hovers by her thigh for a second before she crosses them over her chest.

"I'm okay," I offer her a smile that I cannot fight. "It's just a scratch."

Lily twists her hands into an entwined fist in front of her. "Is everything okay?" Her voice is curious.

"Yeah," I nod. "It's not to do with us and our pack but another. Everything is okay now though."

"Okay," she blinks and brushes her blonde hair over her shoulder. "I didn't know where you went."

My heart melts into a puddle on the floor because even if she doesn't want to admit it, she's worried about me. I can tell because her tone is sincere and she wouldn't ask Fran multiple questions on my whereabouts.

She cares and that burns my chest into dust. Comprehending that idea has pride glowing inside me because we might be getting somewhere, slowly and surely.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you where I was," I admit and glance down at her adorable pyjamas. "We left early this morning and I had no idea what time we would be back. I didn't want to worry you and I knew Fran would look after you."

Lily's throat clenches. "It's okay, she did."

"Go back to sleep. I'll see you in the morning."

"Okay," she nods and takes one step backwards.

"Sleep well, Lily."

"You too," she says quietly over her shoulder.

I watch until she walks back to her room and shuts the door. For a moment I just stand and smile, admiring the conversation we just had.

Progress is still progress.

When I get to my own room I shower and strip down into a fresh pair of boxers before climbing into my sheets. I touch my cheek, the one Lily caressed merely a few minutes ago.

Her touch feels so authentic, so real.

She was concerned. She wanted to know if I was hurt.

I have to squeeze my eyes shut before my heart bursts inside my chest and my wolf runs circles around my body until I can't sleep.

There are sparks between our skin from our growing mate bond, she felt it. I could see it in the way her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree, they were bright and full of life. She had no idea she could feel that much from just a touch of skin.

I can't wait to show her how much more she could feel when she trusts me completely.

The next morning I'm up as soon as the sun rises. Regardless of the fact I feel rough from yesterday's activities, I can't wait to see Lily's face this morning.

I dreamt of her delicate touch on mine.

Her bedroom door is open and the shower opposite her room is blasting so I know she's awake. I head downstairs and begin to make us some breakfast. My stomach has been growling ever since last night but I was too tired to make myself anything.

So this morning it's going to be a full English breakfast. We both deserve it.

I hear footsteps charging down the stairs at an alarming rate and Fran pokes her head around the kitchen counter.

"Hey," I smile as I crack an egg into the pan. "How's Jesse?"

"Yeah, he's fine. Back in bed now."

"See," I place the shells into the bin. "Told you they'd take care of him."

Fran walks up to the counter and places her hand on the edge, I peek up at her but her face doesn't look inviting. "What's up with you?"

"Jesse's grandfather's watch is missing."

"Okay," I stare back at her.

"We can't find it anywhere, it's literally disappeared." One hand floats to her hips. "So there is only one other explanation for it."

I scoff. "So you automatically think it's Lily?"

Fran pokes her tongue into her cheek and hangs her lids low. "Of course it was her Ev, don't be dense."

My eyes narrow in her direction. "You can't just point the finger with no evidence, I can ask her but what if Jesse just put it somewhere safe and forgot where that was?"

She tuts at my words and runs a frustrated hand through her hair. "He's not that stupid. And besides, Lily has stolen stuff before. Nothing used to go missing before, it's got to be her."

"Let me sort it," I warn her. "I don't want you scaring her off by accusing her when we don't know everything."

"When will you realise that she's not good for you Ev?"

"Excuse me?" My voice is harsh.

"You've been fretting, you've been worrying. She's hard work and she's giving you nothing back."

I slam my hand down on the counter causing her to jump. "You have no idea what's going on between us and quite frankly it's none of your business."

Fran folds her arms across her chest. "She will drag us down as a pack being so reserved and secretive. You know absolutely nothing about her Everett! You have no idea what her past is really like, why she was homeless for three years!"

"Trust doesn't happen overnight."

She rolls her eyes again and I resist the urge to snap at her for her rude attitude. "Just find Jesse's watch," she pulls away from the counter. "It's important to him and if she's taken it and done something to it, I swear I will drag her out of this house myself."

"If you fucking touch her, Fran. You will regret it."

I didn't expect my voice to sound so deadly, even Fran whips her head over her shoulder at me. Spraying her short hair across her back in a shocked reaction.

"You'll what?! Go on Everett, I dare you. Tell me what you'll do?"

My hands ball into fists at my sides, the feeling of anger and possessiveness takes over my body. No one will touch her, not even my sister. Hell will break loose and it won't be pretty.

"We might be family Fran but she's my mate and I'll do anything for her."

She scowls at me through her fair lashes and turns her head away, finally leaving me in peace in the kitchen.

I glance down at the pan and realise I've overcooked the eggs. A curse word slips from my mouth and I begin to peel them from the bottom of the pan and onto a plate.

Five minutes later Lily greets me downstairs with her long blonde hair dripping from her shower, when she sees me her lips are crafted into a soft smile. The first smile I have ever seen her give.

I can't even react because I am digesting the beautiful sight in my mind.

"Hey," she gives me a funny look because all I can do is stare.

"Hi," I finally grin back at her. "Are you hungry?"

"Yeah," she nods and perches on the stool in front of me. "It smells good."

I put some food onto a plate for her. Fresh buttered toast and steaming hot beans, coating sausages with bacon, a badly cooked egg and some grilled tomatoes.

Lily's eyes light up at the piping hot breakfast and she takes her knife and fork to dig in. I plate myself up some food and sit beside her, I don't mind sitting in silence when she's eating. Knowing she's getting a good meal always puts my mind at rest.

"Can I ask you something?"

She glances at me and nods.

"Have you taken Jesse's watch? Because if you have, you need to give it back to Fran today."

"What?" Her brows are pulled down tightly. "I haven't."

When I study her expression, I can't tell if she's a good actress or if she's being genuine. I haven't known her long enough to distinguish between the two.

"Lily," I say gently. "I can't help you once I go back and say it wasn't you. So if it was, please just let me know and we can figure this all out."

"I told you, I didn't do it." Her voice becomes progressively louder.

A sigh escapes my lips and I wipe a hand down my forehead. "I want to believe you butβ€”"

"Then don't believe me," she snaps in a hurt tone. "I have nothing to prove to you."

She stands from the counter and I resist the urge to grip onto her wrist to salvage this situation. "Lily, stop," I plead but she faces the wall. "If you have taken it, just place it on my desk by three o'clock. I won't say anything and I'll appreciate it if you do."

Lily scoffs and there is a glimmer of sadness in her eyes. "I can't give something back that I haven't taken."

I watch as she pushes the plate further into the counter. "Thanks for the food," she mumbles under her breath and begins to walk away. "But I don't want to be in this conversation anymore."

Instantly my body swarms with deep regret. I want to believe that she hasn't and this is some form of misunderstanding. Even the look in her eyes screams of hurt and sadness that I've called her out for something that she hasn't even done.

How is that trusting someone?

My gut churns painfully and I feel my breakfast attempt to slide up my throat at the way I've made her feel.

Guilt and embarrassment filters through my body.

Guilt is from my own consciousness but the embarrassment, that's from Lily.

I can feel and experience her emotions in my body for the first time. They're excruciatingly painful because I know I've upset her, I know that I've made her feel embarrassed. My hand slides down to my stomach and I grip at the fabric, a wave of nausea hits me.

I'm a fucking idiot.

The feeling increases and I hate what I've caused. Praying to the Goddess this won't force us back to square one because we've made progress, finally, in the last couple of days.
