"sleepless nights"

β€”

Jake's POV

HIS EYES STARTED TO CLOSE. Jake yawned, shaking his head so the tiredness would go away, but it was very hard. He rubbed his face, staring at the files in front of him. The only reason he had taken the files home was to solve the case faster, so Daniel would go. Okay, maybe jealousy was driving Jake to an unhealthier road with no sleep, but he didn't care.Β

Ignoring the sounds of New York City, he tried to focus on the case, but when reading the files he had to reread the paragraphs about five times each, as he was not understanding them. He was so tired that his head was no longer working properly.

Jake took a sip from his cup of coffee and sighed.Β

He reviewed the case. A lawyer had been killed. Jake checked the attorney's history, his clients. Perhaps he had failed someone in court. But there were too many and if he did that now he would only get two hours of rest. He swallowed hard. He should fix things with Sarah, but was it worth it? Yes it was. He just couldn't do it alone.

He pulled out his cell phone and dialed Charles, hoping he was still awake. No, please, Jake, it's already three in the morning, why would you be awake? But he smiled when he heard the voice of his best friend on the other end of the phone.

"Jake it's very late, what are you doing awake?" a tired Charles said.

"Sorry, bud, I need help with a case andβ€”"

"Can't I help you tomorrow?"

"No, please, I need your help right now!"

Charles sighed. "Fine. What d'you need?"

"The case is the one I'm working with Sarah and detective James. I... uh, I took the files and told them I could solve it alone, practically, but I realized I couldn't."

"Get to the point please, Jakey."

"Right, sorry. So the case is of a lawyer that was murdered, Michael Andersen. I think that maybe the murderer could be some client to which he failed or something, I just need to see which of them were in jail and we could interview them."

"So you want me to help you check which ones were in jail?"

"Please."

"Okay. Send me pictures of the files and I'll text you later."

"Thanks Charles, you're the best best friend bud, I owe you so muchβ€”"

"Just promise me you will rest after this," Charles cut. "Good night, Jake."

Jake smirked, he suddenly felt a little less tired. But it was only the happiness of knowing that he would soon solve the case, he was just as exhausted. He realized because soon his head gave up and he ended up snoring on his kitchen table, fast asleep.

Sarah's POV

She was thinking about Lewis. She didn't like to, but it was not something she could avoid. Sarah realized that she actually had a thousand of good memories with him, like the time that they had gone together to the museum. She hadn't enjoyed it that much, but she could still remember the way he made her feel. Did she miss it? No. She missed someone else. Someone that was right in front of her but at the same time faraway.

The clear blue sky was reflected in the glass of her car on the way to the precinct. She got out of her vehicle and entered the building, tired even if she had gone to bed an hour earlier than normal. Sarah stepped out of the elevator and noticed that Jake was not there yet, but she knew that was not strange, as he was almost always late for work. Before sitting at her desk, she saw that Daniel was leaning against the wall in the meeting room. Sarah left her bag and entered the room.

"Hey," she said, startling Daniel. Sarah chortled. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."

Daniel sighed with a smile, wincing. "It's okay. I don't even know why I'm here so early, I was just excited to work the case with you because it's been haunting me," he explained, and then looked at the bullpen. "By the way, where's detective Peralta? Is he okay now?"

"Yes," Sarah did not know if that was a lie, but it felt like one. "But he's always late, that's normal," she looked at her watch, Jake was breaking his record.Β

"Well, we can't work on the case without him, he has the files," said Daniel, and sat down, putting his hands on the back of his head. "So? Do you want to talk about anything else?"

Sarah laughed. "I don't have anything right now," she crossed her arms, "do you?"

"Only that here is way better," Daniel responded. "This precinct, I mean. In the 9-6 all my co-workers are boring and don't even smile, it's like they're all robots."

"Our captain is a robot," said Sarah, and Daniel chuckled.

"I know, but Raymond Holt is the most honorable man I've met. You wouldn't say he's a robot if you knew my captain, he is not only a robot but rude and strict."

"What does heβ€”"

Sarah didn't finish her sentence because a gasping Jake entered the room slamming the door. He looked terrible, as if he hadn't slept a bit and had crawled into the precinct. Either way, there was a triumphant smile on his face, the one Sarah knew. Was he back to normal again?Β

"I'm here, I'm here," he breathed, putting the files in front of Daniel.

"Are you okay, detective?" he asked, and Jake nodded.

"Yes, I'm great," he turned to Sarah, "I solved the case."

Daniel's eyes broadened, and his face lit up. Sarah had seen him smiling before, but that was a new smirk. "You did? That's amazing!"Β

"I know!" Jake started pacing around the room with enthusiasm, and Sarah laughed at his dorkiness. "It was this man named George Tucker, Andersen was his lawyer but didn't show up when he was supposed to plead for him in a court, so Tucker was sent to jail but guess what, he fled prison a week ago. All we have to do is locate him and do the bust," Jake grinned at Daniel, "but I supposed you would want to do that?"

"Why not?" Daniel shrugged, and Jake high-fived him, excited.Β

"Well, that means you can go," he told Daniel, and Sarah frowned. Was everything about it? Only to get Daniel out of there? Jake didn't seem to realize that he looked rude doing that, but luckily Daniel nodded and stood up, also high-fiving a bewildered Sarah.

"I have to go back to the 9-6," he said with a hint of disgust. "I hope we work on a case together again."

Sarah smirked. "Totally."

Daniel pressed his lips and left the room, and Sarah immediately turned to Jake, anger growing inside her. He was childish, never a jerk about it, but this time he'd acted like one. She would've yelled at him, but he looked really weak, like he could faint at any moment.

"Jake what is happening to you?" she asked.

"What are you... talking about?" he said, yawning. Suddenly all the energy with which he had entered the briefing room seemed to vanish. That close to him, Sarah noticed how pale he was.

"I'm talking about all of this," Sarah pointed at the whole room and then at Jake. "Look at you! Did you sleep last night?"

Jake looked away and didn't answer, and Sarah scoffed. "Let's get you some coffee," she said, and took Jake by the wrist, leading him to the break room. They sat there in silence while drinking from their cups, but it wasn't uncomfortable this time. At least. But Sarah suspected that Amy was wrong. That it could stay like that.

Forever.

Rosa's POV

She and Charles entered the break room. Rosa was certainly not expecting to see Jake sleeping on the table, snoring, with his hoodie as a pillow. Though she shouldn't be surprised, she'd seen him earlier and he didn't look well, he must've gotten only eight minutes of sleep, judging by the dead expression on his face.Β

Charles and her exchanged looks, he seemed to be dying of cuteness, but Rosa was quite worried about Jake. Ever since he'd broken up with Sophia, like Sarah had said, he hadn't been the same. Rosa missed already his dumb jokes and his Die Hard references. He didn't cheer the squad up anymore, like he used to do before.

Jake lifted his head when he heard Rosa and Charles entered. He rubbed his bloodshot eyes, and focused his sight on them. If he wasn't moving, Rosa would've thought he was dead.

"Damn, Jacob," she said, serving a cup of coffee for her, but she was also going to give Jake one, he looked like he needed it.Β

"You didn't sleep after you called me at 3 am?" said Charles, and Rosa raised an eyebrow.

"He called you at 3 am?!"

"I needed help for a case," Jake slurred, burying his face on his hands. Charles and Rosa sat in front of him, and she handed Jake the cup of coffee. He took it with eager. "Thanks," he said before drinking it in one gulp.

Charles shook his head. "I don't think that's healthy. You should go back to sleep."

"Where's Sarah?" Rosa questioned. Maybe the thing that Sarah had told her and Gina was actually a big deal, since it was truly rare not to see Sarah and Jake together. He yawned and absently combed his hair.Β

"I don't know. Maybe avoiding me."

"Why would someone want to avoid you?!" Charles practically yelled, and then noticed and mumbled "sorry."

Jake shrugged. "We aren't in the best of terms."

Rosa and Charles nodded. "We know," they said in unison.Β

"What? How? Did she tell you? Ugh, I knew it. Why am I so stupid? Can't I even fix my problems myself? I thought I was doing things right but then things got awkward between usβ€”"

"Jake," Rosa cut him before he could keep ranting. "Spiraling won't change how things are. Listen, I know I'm not the best on these stuff, but Sarah actually asked for help. She wanted to know how to deal with the low of your friendship."

"Yeah, friendship," Jake snapped, almost disgusted. "Just friends, right? Nothing else. But she doesn't know that I want something else." He sighed, as Rosa and Charles exchanged looks. Rosa knew that Sarah must like Jake, but she didn't know that Jake liked her back. He seemed to noticed the way that his friends looked at him, because he frowned. "What?"

"You just told us you like Sarah," said Charles.

Jake laughed hysterically. "No I didn't!"

"I get it, you're tired, you can't keep your thoughts inside," said Rosa, and she hesitantly put a hand on his, which lay on the table. "But, hey, you two should sort your heads out, talk. You should ask her to go on a date with you, trying won't take anything."

But Jake laughed like a maniac again. "Whaaat? What are you talking about? I don't like her, okay? We're just friends."

"Jake, you literally told us you wished you were more than that," Charles intervened again.

"Did I?" Jake blinked several times. Rosa nodded, and Jake rolled his eyes in despair. "Stupid thoughts can't stay inside my stupid head."

"I see that," said Rosa. What she saw were two people longing for each other but too afraid to confess their feelings. She had to help them. And she was going to do so.
