chapter 7 - sparks fly

➳ ➳ ➳

Dakota began wondering if the cries of pain leaving her mouth and the tears running down her face even meant anything to them.

To Bellamy.

Was he, not the least bit affected by the fact that he was abusing a young girl right now? Did she not remind him of his younger sister standing behind him most slightly due to her being the young, naive, and underestimated girl they viewed her as?

Her thoughts were interrupted when a girl with tanned skin emerged from the floor entrance, requesting Clarke.

"What's taking so long? Finn stopped breathing."

"What?!" Clarke shouted.

"He started again, but next time he might not." She replied.

"She won't tell us anything," Clarke stated, motioning towards Kota.

The tanned girl scoffed and eyed her up and down.

"Wanna bet?" She asked, ripping something off the wall.

"Raven, what are you doing?"Β  Bellamy stepped forward.

"Showing her something new."

She took the wires in her hands and started rubbing them together, making sparks fly from both ends.

Kota hadn't seen such a thing in her life but she did know that sparks came out of fire, and fire was hot. She immediately attempted flinching away from her but without hesitation, Raven jabbed the wires into her ribcage. Painful, burning, shockwaves shot throughout her entire body and she began violently shaking and trembling at their touch. All she could do was scream out in pain unlike any other.

She couldn't control her breathing and soon she felt dizzy from all the pain they had inflicted on her. She didn't know how much more she could take.

"WHICH ONE IS IT?!" Raven yelled in her face.

Kota couldn't even bring her head up to look her in the eyes. All she wanted to do was just fall to the floor and cry. She wasn't able to, however, because the restraints kept her held in the air, letting Raven bring the wires to her exposed stomach once more.

The instant they met her flesh the same burning pain shot through her system and she released another ear-piercing scream. She knew she had promised Lincoln that she wouldn't break, but nothing he said could have prepared her for what she was enduring. She couldn't take it anymore. She tried turning to look toward Raven, silently begging her to stop, but the girl couldn't even look at her. Instead, she aimed the wires at her again.

"No more!" Octavia cried out, grabbing the mechanic's attention.

"He's all I have left! She's letting Finn die!" Raven argued.

The brunette bent down and picked up Dakota's blade from the floor, instantly letting her know what she was about to do. She tried to jerk away from the poles in an attempt to stop her but it was useless.

"She won't let me die." She said, before bringing the poisoned blade to her arm and slicing down her skin, leaving a blood trail dripping from it.

"Octavia, no!" Bellamy shouted, but it was too late.

Octavia then hurried to Clarke's side and started picking up the vials, putting them in front of Kota's face.

"Which one is it?" She asked, picking them up one by one.

Dakota didn't know if it was the pain being too much to handle, or just the thought of the brunette dying that triggered her.

But for some reason, she finally broke.

She looked at the hurt in Octavia's eyes and eventually nodded her head yes when she picked up another vial, indicating that was the correct one.

Her sudden compliance sent Raven and Clarke rushing out of the room with the antidote to help Finn.Β

Octavia let out a sigh of relief and began wrapping up her fresh wound. She looked back up at Kota and their eyes met. The Grounder couldn't tell if the look on her face was pain, sadness, or confusion. Confusion, as to why she was the one to get her to break.

She stared back at her though, wondering the same thing. Why was it that for as long as she was staying strong, she was the one to get her to break? She honestly didn't know. It could have been because of her willingness to help and stand up for her. Or, it could have just been because Kota felt like they were the same in some ways. All she knew, was that she couldn't let her die.

And now, Octavia knew that too.

Later on, Octavia found herself dipping a cloth into a bucket of water and ringing it out before raising it toward the wound on Kota's hand to clean it, and the latter allowed her to.

"I'm so sorry." She whispered. Her voice wavering slightly. "You saved my life and look at the thanks you get."

She carefully dabbed the wet cloth on her hand, gently wiping the blood away. Kota just stared at her in the process. She didn't know what it was about her that made her heart flutter, but she was just thankful that at least she didn't view her as an enemy anymore.

That was progress.

"I never wanted any of this to happen to you." She continued, slowly caressing her palm with her fingers. Kota didn't know what it was that gave her the courage, but she hesitantly wrapped her fingers around hers in return and looked her in the eyes.

"Th-thank you." She softly replied, despite the lingering pain.

Her English words caught Octavia off guard, but she gave her a small smile, which released butterflies in the Grounder's stomach.

"Hey, did she just say something?" Miller asked from the corner of the room.

"No, she didn't." Octavia lied.

"You know your brother doesn't want you up here, Octavia." He stated.

She only nodded her head in understanding and finished up, before exiting the room.

Not before giving her one last knowing glance as she left though.

Octavia sat in the chair on the lower level of the drop ship, when her brother entered.

"You're still here?" Bellamy asked.

"I'm not moving, until you let me up there to see her." She replied.

He shook his head.

"Get comfortable then."

He turned to leave but hesitated, and then turned back around.

"I let her live. Isn't that enough?" He asked, suddenly.

"She saved my life. And yours." Octavia responded.

"I know you see it that way, butβ€”"

"That's the way it is!" She cut him off.

"She's still dangerous," Bellamy stated coldly.

"Only because of what you did." She argued, making him let out a breath of frustration.

"Look," he began. "Whatever twisted connection you think you have with that animal, forget it. You don't get to see her. End of discussion."

He started to leave once more, but Octavia stopped him.

"Why do you even care, if I ruined your life?" She responded, referring to their conversation from the other day. "You should want me to go up there. Maybe you'll get lucky and she'll kill me, problem solved."

"Octavia, you know I didn't mean that." Bellamy sighed.

Before anything else was said, Clarke walked in.

"Bellamyβ€”" she started but he cut her off.

"The answer is still no, I'm not talking to Jaha."

"Hey, relax. That's not why I'm here. The Ark found some old records that show a supply depot not too far from here." She said.

"What kind of supplies?" Bellamy questioned, with his eyebrow cocked.

"The kind that might give us a chance to live through winter. I'm gonna go check it out, but I could use backup." She answered him.

"I'll get my stuff, meet you in ten." He replied.

He looked to Octavia who was listening in on the conversation, before walking out with Clarke.

(Meanwhile...)

"What do you think they're gonna do with the grounder?" Jasper asked Monty.

They were currently in the middle of cracking open shells from tree nuts that they found in the forest.

"I'd rather not think about it," Monty answered truthfully when he saw Bellamy exit the dropship.

"Well, it's been days since Bellamy captured her. How long until her friends come looking?" He questioned.

"Cheer up," Monty stated, giving him a half-hearted smile.

"In that time, we'll all be dead from hypothermia." He added, before tossing a tree nut in both his and Jasper's mouths.

Octavia waited until Miller was called from his post to chat with Roma's parents on the radio before she snuck up to the upper level of the drop ship where Dakota was.

"Hey," she greeted her, as she entered the room. "We don't have much time. I brought you some water."

She walked towards Dakota, who was still restrained.

"Here."

She brought the cup of water to Dakota's mouth, and let her sip it slowly.

This was the first drink that Dakota had had in days, and she was getting weaker. She greatly appreciated Octavia's help because her mouth was as dry as a desert.

"Sorry, I haven't seen you since everything happened. My brother's been keeping me away." She apologized, as she wiped the water away from her lips with the back of her hand.

"He's a total dick, which you probably already figured out." She continued.

Her statement made a chuckle escape from the grounder girl.

"You do understand me. I knew it." Octavia smirked, setting the water down.

"Well, at least let me get you cleaned up quickly." She spoke, taking off her jacket and tossing it onto the floor.

She wet the cloth beside her and brought it up to wipe the blood from Dakota's abdomen.

She was gentle with her touch and Dakota didn't realize she was holding her breath, up until that point.

"This is all my fault because I freaked out so bad when you locked me up in that cave." She stated, bringing the cloth up towards Dakota's face.

She carefully wiped her bloody cheek with her right hand, as she placed the left one on the opposite side.

"You'd totally understand if you knew how I grew up." She continued.

What Octavia didn't know, was that in a similar way, Dakota did understand.

"M-my name...is Dakota." The grounder girl spoke suddenly.

Octavia looked surprised at first, but soon she quickly smiled.

"Dakota. I'm Octavia."

"Well, is that it? Is that all you're gonna say?" She asked, moving closer to Dakota's face.

"It's not safe for us to talk," Dakota replied, softly.

"Well, if we shouldn't talk, why did you tell me your name?" Octavia questioned her.

"I want you to remember me...after I'm dead." She replied, honestly.

Octavia immediately shook her head.
"You're not gonna die. Don't say that."

"Octavia..." Dakota cut her off, looking deep into the brunette's eyes. "This only ends one way."

"Just talk to them." Octavia pleaded. "Tell them you're not the enemy."

"But, I am," Dakota stated.

As much as she wanted things to be different, and as much as she wanted to change the way Trikru and the Sky People view each other, she had come to realize that maybe she was wrong all along.

After all, she was only there in the first place because she agreed to spy on them. She was told to get information from them so that Trikru could gain an advantage in the upcoming war soon to come...
