"Should we like...check on her?" Kaminari's confused voice is barely heard over the chatter of the bus, but his friends all know what he's talking about.

It was the day of the Provisional Hero Licence exams: perhaps the most important day of their lives so far. It quite literally defined their future, and was everything that U.A and hero training was leading them up to. To say the least, it's a day you wouldn't want to miss.

So what was wrong with Shinobu? Kou had been 20 minutes late to the bus, showing up just before Aizawa decided to give up and leave without her. She looked a mess: her skin was paler than usual, eyebags darker, and her aura was teeming with black. She'd barely spoken a word or even looked in their direction, deciding to sit in the front of the bus with their teacher. She was definitely not acting normal, and no one knew what to do.

"She's kinda scary like this..." Sero cringes at the thought of approaching the girl, knowing there was definitely a huge risk of getting hurt in the process.

"What if it's something we did?!" Mina panics, looking like she was on the verge of tears, "I swear to god, Bakugou what did you do?!"

"Baku-bro? What do you think we should do?" Kirishima asks, and everybody turns to stare at the explosive blond who'd been looking out the window for the past half hour.

Truthfully, he was feeling a bit petty. Kou had stared at him when she entered the bus, completely ignoring his subtle invite to sit beside him in favour of sitting beside their stupid sensei; what the hell?! Bakugou Katsuki wasn't someone you ignored, and his pride wasn't going to allow it from anyone- not even his favourite person.

Still, Kou was acting weird, and Bakugou hated to admit it but he was a little worried about what could've happened to make her so upset. She was practically exploding with excitement on the phone the day before, ready to kick ass and finally get her licence.

"Just leave her alone," he gruffs out, still looking out the window. "She's probably just hungry or some shit."

Even though that excuse didn't feel right, it was enough to make the group stop talking about it; she'd talk to them eventually.

Kou did not have time for anyone's shit today.

After what had happened last night she did not want to even go outside, let alone participate in an exam that would decide the rest of her life. Why did she always have the worst luck?

They'd just gotten off the bus, and she ignored her friends again in favour of standing off to the side. She knew she was being rude and they were probably just concerned, but it was none of their fucking business.

"Hi! I'm Shindo Yo, it's a pleasure to meet you guys!" Some guy from a neighbouring school was going around and shaking hands with everyone in 1-A, acting all friendly and so full of shit. The only person who seemed to catch on was Bakugou- the rest of her classmates were a bunch of ignorant idiots.

If they weren't literally about to become heroes she'd have thought he was trying to pickpocket them; god knows she'd used the same ploy dozens of times before.

"Hi! It's nice to meet you--" the boy finally reached her, about to grab her hand in his when she yanked it back. For extra measure, she drew her leg back and kicked him in the balls. When he crumpled to the ground in pain she stepped over him, looking down at his figure with a deadly glare.

"Don't fucking touch me, asshole." she hisses, and continues walking into the exam building without another word.

Kou really didn't want to deal with anybody today.

Eventually everyone gathered in the main room, hundreds of young hopefuls squished together in the cramped space. The announcer was going on and on about something irrelevant, and Kou tried her best to pay attention but her mind just wasn't there.

She needed to pass this. She needed to do well and become a hero, today . This was literally the day she'd been fighting for, the day she'd been looking forward to for two years, the day that she thought she'd never see. Of course it also happened to be the day she was also feeling the least heroic she'd felt in months.

Whatever. She could mope and be depressed after this was over. She needed to focus- wait, what was going on again?

She was handed 6 metallic-looking balls and told to eliminate at least 2 people to pass the first phase of the exam- easy enough. Thankfully her quirk was perfect for something like this: she'd use her bungee gum to block any attacks and send them back to her fellow examinees.

Soon after the instructions were given the walls around the participants collapsed, revealing a large arena with different terrains the students could choose to fight in.

Kou looked around, trying to see where she'd have the best fighting chance. She figured it would be the urban environment with all the buildings; she could easily hide and use the environment to her advantage.

Just as she's about to walk off, Midoriya calls out to her and the other people who were ready to get started. "Everyone, don't get too separated! We need to move as a group!"

The green haired nerd wasn't wrong: U.A. was put at a disadvantage with everyone knowing their quirks thanks to the sports festival- it was likely everyone would be out to get them once the timer started. Which is exactly why Kou had to get as far away from her classmates as possible.

"Yeah right," Bakugou refused to cooperate as usual, "This isn't a field trip!"

He stalks off, and as he passes Kou grabs onto her wrist. She yanks away from his grip, ignoring the offended look on his face. "The hell are you doing? Come with me."

Kou hardens her glare, "I don't need your help to pass this round. Just go by yourself."

Bakugou scoffs, not believing her words. "Seriously? What, you're staying with fucking Deku?"

"Not everything is about you and Deku, you self-absorbed prick," she spits out, not having the patience to deal with his inferiority complex today, "I don't need to team up with anyone to win this shit. Leave me alone."

Kou turns on her heels and starts walking off on her own, and Bakugou is screaming insults at her in annoyance. He eventually goes his own separate way, grunting and hissing under his breath at the girl's sudden attitude towards him. "If I don't see you on the other side I'll fucking kill you!"

What the fuck was wrong with her today?

__

Kou had been the first one to pass the round, just a couple minutes before that crazy wind guy decided to go berserk on the poor students left in the city terrain.

Her bungee gum ended up coming in handy in more than one way: she applied her quirk to her feet and managed to walk up a building to gain a better vantage point and sight on her surroundings.

She used her cards to grab the balls from the other hero's pockets, bringing them to herself and using her bungee gum to send all the balls she'd gathered (plus her own) to everyone around her: in the end she'd eliminated 15 people- a bit of an overkill but she had some steam to burn.

Just as she was about to go back to the waiting room, she felt a flurry of wind coming from behind her. She damn near almost fell off the building, had it not been for her nen helping her stick to the floor.

"Passion! I think heroes need passion! All your fights are so passionate! I love it!" he yells, and Kou can't help but roll her eyes at his theatrics. Wasn't this the guy who gave himself a concussion bowing to their class earlier?

He sends the hundreds of balls flying down to the rest of the students, eliminating over 100 people at least. This guy may have been a dipshit, but he wasn't someone Kou wanted to mess around with. She's glad she passed before she would've become one of those people too.

"Hey, wait!" she hears a voice calling out to her as she's about to make her exit, and Kou sighs before deciding to turn around.

"What?"

The Shiketsu guy bows and hits his head on the ground again, making her cringe. "You were so passionate back there! Your quirk allowed you to eliminate a lot of people! That's the U.A. spirit for you!"

Kou raises an eyebrow at him, suspicious of his intentions. It was every man for himself today, and making friends with someone who would 100% turn their back on you given the chance wasn't something she was too keen on doing.

She jumps off the ledge of the building without another word, using her bungee gum to stop her from hitting the ground last minute. Walking back to the waiting room, she feels herself lightening up a bit: she was one step closer to getting her licence, and then she'd worry about everything else after.

"One more time," Shinobu growled under her breath, "Talk to me one more fucking time and I'll kill you."

That whirlwind guy from earlier-Yoaroshi, as he later introduced himself-would not stop talking to her. He'd been trying to make conversation with her for the better part of the hour they'd been there, despite her obvious attempts to ignore him. If she hadn't seen his quirk earlier she would think he was trying to use it right now, but Kou knew now that he was just really, really annoying.

Maybe if yesterday hadn't happened she'd be in a better mood; maybe if she hadn't spent the better part of the night feeling like shit instead of sleeping she'd have been able to handle him.

"What did you say? I didn't hear you." he asked innocently, leaning over so he could hear her better. She was just trying to rest before the next phase of the exam, away from everybody else. They were the first two people there, but as time passed on more people came into the room- even some of her fellow classmates. She'd seen a few Shiketsu hats too, so why the fuck was this guy over here bothering her?

"I said fuck off before I kill you, bastard!" she finally snaps, yelling at the older guy and drawing attention to the two of them. His eyes widen and he blinks in surprise, before laughing heartily and slapping her shoulder. Kou growls more, eyebrow twitching in annoyance. Was he stupid or something?

"You U.A. people are so full of passion! This is why I love your school!" He continues laughing as if nothing is wrong, and Kou wonders if knocking this guy out would get her in trouble or not.

"Then why don't you go talk to someone who gives a shit?! Leave me alone!" She storms off; she'd tried standing her ground and staying in her spot for the last 45 minutes, and she was done. What the fuck was wrong with this guy?

"Kou-chan!"

"Yo, Shinobu!" She can hear Bakugou call her as she walks by her class, but she keeps walking.

Bakugou groans, getting up from his seat and walking after her. He'd only passed the first phase a few minutes prior, and he'd been looking for the girl since then. He didn't care if she was in a mood, he was going to talk to her and find out what the fuck happened that made her act this way.

"Wait up, you bitch!" he yells at her, and Shinobu abruptly stops in her tracks. He finally reaches her and grabs her wrist, spinning her around.

"The fuck is wrong with you today?" he demands, his words not coming out as nice as he intended.

"Nothing's wrong with me today." Kou insists stubbornly, crossing her arms and avoiding eye contact with him.

Is this how Bakugou was after Kamino? He almost feels bad for putting his friend through this, because it had been only a couple hours and he was already done with her shit.

"Seriously? You've been acting like a moody bitch all day! Just tell me what happened!"

Kou laughs dryly, "That's your way of showing concern? Really? Nice try Baka-gou, you really know how to make people feel better."

His lips twitch, ready to fire back an insult but holding it in for the sake of keeping what semblance of peace they had left. "Stop avoiding the topic."

"Nothing is wrong with me!" she snapped, "What the fuck is everyone's problem? It's no one's business what goes on in my life, just fuck off!"

"Why the fuck are you always coming up in my business, then?" he angrily retorts, "Why the fuck are you always bothering me about telling you shit? What, you can't do the same thing for me?"

"You're such a fucking idiot," she sneers, just wanting him to leave even if it meant hurting him, "I don't owe you shit! If equality is what you're so worried about then whatever, don't tell me anything anymore! I don't give a fuck! Just go away!"

Bakugou stares at her for a second, and Kou almost gives in when she sees how disappointed he is in her. She wants to tell him, wants to confide in him, wants to trust somebody else for once- but she can't. Especially not now: this was possibly the worst time to have a heart-to-heart conversation.

"Fine," he mutters blankly, backing away from her. She wants to reach out, she wants to take back her words- but she can't move. "You can find me when you decide to stop acting like a baby and actually tell me what the fuck is wrong with you."

When he finally leaves her alone and gives her what she asked for, Kou wishes that things were different. That she was different.
