I stared out of my window, the voice behind me becoming drowned out to white noise. The way Alissa finds fun in the simplest of things sort of amazes me. Because I could never find it in anything.ย

She's been following and talking to the gardener for the past hour. I think he's starting to get annoyed, but he better not be fucking mean to her.

She loves the outdoors, she loves nature. And she thrives in it. When she's outside, her clothing blows against her skin, showing her figure. Her already light hair looks even lighter and it blows around in the wind. Her bright eyes are even more vibrant than the grass and trees, and I find the corners of my mouth twitching up while I look at her.ย

Charlotte's hand on the back of my shoulder made me turn around, snapping me out of my thoughts.

She moved her eyes to be looking where I was looking, and once she did, she rolled her eyes. I asked her, "Why are you still here again?"

"Maybe you'd know if you weren't busy staring at her," she snapped, crossing her arms as if we were a couple and I had just cheated on her. But we aren't and we never will be. I will stare at whoever I wish, and that person is Alissa Gomez.

"You gave me the information for Portugal, and that's all I need from you. So you can go now," I replied coldly, turning and looking back out the window. Alissa smiles while following the gardener around, smiling the entire time she talks to him.ย

Charlotte let out a huff behind me, but I still didn't turn around, I didn't care. She continued to stand there, thinking I would turn around to look at her, but I didn't. Instead, I continued to look at Alissa's face light up when the gardener let her water some pink flowers. Once Charlotte realized I wasn't going to turn, her heavy footsteps left my room followed by my door slamming shut. But the sound did not make me flinch. I just tilted my head as I watched Alissa continue to water flowers, and then I put the curtains back in place.ย

I walked outside to the backyard, approaching Alissa and the gardener with my hands in my pockets. Even from this far away, I could smell her perfume, strawberries and vanilla. It did not surprise me that a sweet girl had such a sweet scent.ย

She asked him excitedly while following behind him, "What are their names! They sound like so much fun. Actually, you haven't really told me anything about them so I don't know if they're fun. Maybe they're lame. Are your kids lame?"

The gardener gave me a 'Please make this stop' look once he realized I was there and I repressed a smile as I put my hand on her back. Once I did do she turned around, giving me big smile the second her bright eyes looked at me. I asked her, "Are you ready for Portugal tomorrow?"

"Yup! I've been learning Portuguese all day before the gardener got here. He doesn't talk much but I think he might be becoming my best friend," she looked at him, making him quickly look away and pretend to do something to do the dirt.

With my hand I guided her back towards the house while asking her, "Have you already packed?"

"Mhm," she nods. "I did it as soon as I woke up."

I nodded, "Good."

I hate traveling, even for 50 million dollars. But knowing Alissa is coming with me makes it better, and makes it feel more worth it. She has not seen the world outside of this town, it's all she knows, and I'd like to show her that life is different everywhere. We entered the kitchen and she took a seat on one of the stools, and I started to pull some food out of the fridge.

She looked at me while lowering her eyebrows and asked, "Are you making something?"

I turned around to answer the question, but then I saw a pink flower petal caught in her hair. I reached across the counter, her eyes following my hand until I reached her soft hair and removed the petal. Once she realized it had been stuck in her hair, she laughed, and the sound of her laughter made something shift in my chest.ย

"I'm going to make us dinner," I turn back around and answer her.ย

"Really?" she asks. "But you have like, a million cooks."

I nodded, "Yea. But I'm still a pretty good cook."

Christian has been out all day, looking for Jorge with Nic and Marco. The fact that he wants me dead isn't even what pisses me off, it's knowing what he said to Alissa. Over my dead body would she be his one day, even if she isn't mine. A man like him does not deserve her, although, I know that I do not either.ย

But the word Mine. That word makes something go through my body, something warm, something foreign.ย ย

While putting the food into the pan, she came over and stood beside me. She looked up at me while I moved the food around and asked, "Are you still going to teach me how to fight? I know I kicked your ass last time, but I think a little more practice would be great."

I nodded, "Once we're back. We're only gonna be in Portugal for a few days."

She walked back over to the table and sat down. As I cooked, I realized I was going to be eating dinner with a woman for the first time in my life. I don't like to talk to people, I don't like to go on dates, but when I'm around Alissa it's like I feel the opposite way than the way I've felt my entire life. I feel different around her. I cook for her, I'm going to eat with her, something I had never done with anybody else.

I set the food down on the table once it was done, and I sat across from her. She told me, "Thank you, Miles, It smells good. How come you have cooks if you can cook yourself?"

The only reason why I was cooking was because I wanted to spend time with her. But I didn't want to say that out loud. I just shrugged, and she bit into the food.ย

"What time are we going in the morning?" she asks.

"9 am."

"Oh, Jesus. I haven't woken up at 9 since I was working before coming here. But it's fine, if I'm not up by then you can just hit me with a pillow to wake me up," she shrugged, the corners of my mouth turning up, but I play it off by biting into the food.

I'm enjoying being around her more than I should. But I can't help it.

Because I'm starting to feel alive when I'm around her, too.ย

After getting off the phone with the pilot, I got into the shower. But I don't feel normal, I feel something different.ย

It was like I was happy, excited, and nervous all at once. All emotions that I had not felt in years, I now felt all at once, because of one girl. I rubbed the shampoo into my hair, hoping that Christian was already up.

Christian got his own room, but Alissa and I are sharing one. When I fell asleep with her that one, that was the best sleep I've ever gotten in my fucking life. No dreams, no nightmares, just a peaceful oblivion.ย

I stepped out of the shower, shaking my wet black hair. I shaved my facial hair which was growing subtly before grabbing some clothes and putting them on once I was dry.ย

I carried my suitcase out, putting it in the trunk of my car. The birds were chirping outside, the warm weather having a slight breeze to it today. Christian came outside while yelling at me, "I'm so excited to meet some Portuguese women."

"Good luck to them," I muttered, him putting his suitcase in too.

I asked him, "Is Alissa up?"

"I don't know, I didn't check."

Fucking dumbass.

I walked inside, heading up the stairs. I knocked on her door before entering, and my eyes fell to her asleep in her bed still. She fell asleep in shorts, making me have to look away for a second since her ass was nearly out.ย

I grabbed her suitcase, put it into the trunk, and opened the door to the backseat of my car. I headed back inside, grabbing one of the blankets and wrapping her in it before carefully picking her up. I walked down the stairs, not wanting to wake her up since the flight is 6 hours long.

Once she was in the back I started to drive, heading for my private jet. Despite it only being 9, Christian was already sipping on a flask filled with whiskey.

After about 30 minutes of driving, we got to the plane. Christian got out and started moving the suitcases, and I picked up Alissa again. I carried her inside of the plane, setting her down onto one of the couches.ย

After talking to the pilot and getting everything inside, we were ready to go. Christian sat at the back, eating some fruit while he continued to drink. I sat across from Alissa, resting my ankle on my knee.ย

As we started to take off, Alissa's eyes slowly opened. She looked confused for a second, looking around at her surroundings. But once she realized where we were, she sighed, "I didn't wake up at 9?"

I shook my head and she stood up, coming and sitting beside me. She smiled, "In a few hours we're gonna be on the other side of the world. Wait, why is nobody else on this plane?"

"It's mine."

Her jaw dropped, looking around some more. Once she made eye contact with Christian he smirked, "Isn't it so fucking cool? From rags to riches, if only my parents could see me now. Too bad I killed them."

I shot him a glare since I knew Alissa wouldn't want to hear something like that, but he just shrugged. And thankfully, Alissa hadn't heard, because she turned around and looked out the window.

She got up and took some of Christian's fruit, making him roll his eyes. She came and sat back down, leaning her head against my shoulder.

Warmth filled my stomach. She was so comfortable being around me, the fact that I'm a killer not even coming into her brain. That means she trusts me, and that tugs on my stone heart. I only ever had people trust me so I could betray them. But now, I had somebody trust me, that I would never do anything to. That I would protect.ย

For the entire flight, Alissa and I talked. Christian ended up taking a nap, his slight snoring filling the air. I learned more about her, more about what she did as a kid. And once her eyes closed for a nap, I stared at her.

I've never felt this way before, and I don't know how to act. But when I looked at her, breathe in her clean vanilla and strawberry scent, touch her soft skin, I feel protective. Like I'd never let a thing happen to her, even if I had to kill thousands.ย

For the rest of the flight, I was left with my thoughts. Even if I didn't understand them.

Once we landed, her head lifted. I removed my fingers that I was running through her hair and she asked me through a yawn, "Are we here?"

I nodded and she stood up, my shoulder already missing the warmth from her body. We all thanked the pilot before getting off, carrying our suitcases with us. The car I rented was ready for us, so we were able to drive straight to the hotel.

Once we got there and got out of the car, Alissa cheered while looking around, "This place is gorgeous!"

It was right on the beach because I thought she might like that. Tomorrow I have to go to the casino and do the job, but tonight we could do whatever we want.

As we got off the elevator to our floor, Christian waved at us, "See you guys tomorrow. I'm gonna be out drinking."

We nodded as he walked towards his room, and we walked towards ours. We entered, and I studied Alissa's face to see if she liked it. And by how wide her smile was, I'd say she did.

I told her, "I'm gonna change. You can look around for a bit."

A L I S S A

I noticed something in the distance, my hand touching the glass while I looked closer. A bunch of people were standing on the beach. I stared at them for a moment, but once I realized what they were going to do, my face lit up.

I ran to the bedroom, "Miles!"

He looked a little surprised, just doing the buckle of his jeans up and still standing without a shirt. I apologized, "Sorry."

Except I wasn't that sorry because he looks really good without a shirt.

While pulling a t-shirt over his head he asked, "What is it?"

"We are going to the beach. Right now," I demand.

His eyebrows lowered, "Neither of us have bathing suits on."

"No," I shook my head. "Just come, we aren't swimming."

He adjusted his shirt while walking over to me, and I grabbed onto his hand. I started to run while holding onto him, making him run too. I didn't want to miss it.

Once we were out of the hotel, the warm air touched my skin and made a smile form on my face. We ran to the beach, the group of people still standing there. As Miles looked around I told him, "They're releasing lanterns! Let's get one."

We walked over to an elderly man, getting two lanterns from him. Everybody standing on the beach looked so happy that it warmed my heart. I turned to look at Miles and suggested, "We should write something on them. Something you want to tell the stars."

I asked somebody nearby for a pen, and we walked over to the wooden fence for a flat surface. I held the pen out for him to take and told him, "Don't tell me what you write! Let's keep it a secret."

As he started to write, I thought of what he could be writing. His face was soft while he wrote, not looking like the assassin that he was. He didn't look like a killer right now, he just looked like Miles DiCaprio.

Once he was done writing, he handed me the pen. I wrote on mine, smiling at what I put down.ย

Once I returned the pen back, Miles asked me, "So, how long do we keep it a secret?"

"Maybe one day we can tell each other. But for right now, let's just keep it a secret," I smiled at him, and he nodded his head.

Once it was time to release them, everybody counted down from 3. And once it hit 0, nearly 100 glowing lanterns floated up to the sky. I watched, admiring how beautiful they looked.

When I turned to look at Miles, I was surprised to see a smile on his face. He watched, the orange glow lighting up half of his face. I smiled while looking at him, thinking about what I wrote down.

'I hope Miles stays in my life forever.'
