F O R T Y - O N E
the grim reaper's field day.

Horris and Wesley Harrington sorely underestimated the range of human hearing.

They held meetings somewhere that was way too close to Otto, and thus she heard everything. She heard extra details of the goldhunt - ones she didn't think the group knew of. She heard about John B, it was information that would flip his life upside-down.

It would change everything.

But that wasn't all she heard, she heard Horris telling his son that no one could be killed in the initial interaction, they needed both information and Horris wanted the full sick satisfaction of the kill. No matter what information the group gave up, the outcome would be the same.

Their plan was as follows: get the group to the entry foyer, tell them the full story of what happened to both John B's mother and the gold hunt, bring Otto out as leverage, extract Sarah from the group, take the girls to the bedroom outlooking the back garden and then systematically killing them. He wanted to make sure Sarah and Otto watched.

To ensure there wasn't anyone accidentally killed during the initial interaction Horris told Wes to take the bullets out of the gun he was going to hold to Otto's forehead, assuring him the gun would be enough of a deterrent.

Otto heard it all.

Hours passed, the sun set and she sat looking emotionless while she flipped through plan after plan to see what would work.

She was broken from her daze when Wes squated next to her and turned open the key to her handcuffs. She stood up, not acting upon her plan, he grabbed a handful of the back of her shirt and leaned down to put his face near her ear.

"Don't make me use the gun, princess."

Wes couldn't see the smirk that took over her lips, she didn't say anything and he began pushing her through the house and into the entry room.

There stood the Pogue's, all looking terrified, she looked straight passed them all, acting almost as if she hadn't ever met them, like they were strangers. Otto could physically feel JJ's eyes on her, begging for her to look at him. But she didn't give in, she couldn't have emotion cloud her judgement.

While the gun pressed to her head didn't have anything inside it she knew of the guns that littered the Harrington household that most definitely were, Wes boasted about it all the time. She knew there was one stashed somewhere in that very room, she just couldn't remember where.

She stood there for a few seconds.

Sarah was called forward and that's when Otto began her plan, she didn't want Sarah to reach Horris so he could take her so, as she took tentative steps forward Otto, whose hands stuck to the back pocket of her trousers pulled out something she was given months ago.

The pocket knife.

There was a button on the side that flipped the blade out as she pressed that she twisted around and plunged it in the first place she saw, that happened to be Wesley's shoulder.

He dropped the gun in shock, looking down at the wound as she pulled the knife out of his shoulder, it quickly began leaking blood that ran down his arm.

"It isn't fun being abused by an ex is it?" She asked like it was an actual question.

A gunshot made her turn around, Horris laid on the floor, blood gushing from his head.

If Wes stood right there, and Horris was dead where had the gun come from?

Her question was answered when she looked up from the body to JJ, who was looking straight back at her. Everybody stood still for a few seconds, while, Wes was cursing and yelling.

Then John B shouted that they needed to get out of there, they all began running for the door but Otto slipped on the blood pouring out of Horris, her hands and knees were coated in blood and by the time she got up the group was a few seconds ahead of her.

JJ turned around when he noticed she wasn't there, his face paled before there was a gunshot.

They all continued running but JJ who stood there with a gun aimed at Wes who obviously found the one stowed away in the entry room. The first gunshot hadn't hit anybody, it embedded itself in the ground near the group.

"Run JJ, fuck him." Otto shouted as she passed him, he did as he was told and gunshots kept ringing out occasionally.

Pope hit the ground, everyone stopped running toward the car and instead ran toward their friend. He was fine, he just tripped.

Otto turned and saw Wes had begun to run toward the group, his shots grew further apart then she stumbled back a pace.

She was dehydrated and likely had a concussion so when she tripped she blamed it on that, but then she felt like Mike Tyson had punched her in the stomach without warning.

Dehydration and concussions really mess with you, she turned toward the group who were about to keep running when Sarah stopped, saw what happened, muttered something unintelligible and began running toward Otto.

It took a full second for her to put two and two together, she was so fucked.

Instead of falling to the ground she decided to somewhat sit down. She had yet to look down, but once she got on the ground she did.

Once again, she felt like she was dying.

It was becoming a common occurrence in her life.

But this time was different, she wasn't emotionally destroyed or giving birth, no, she got shot. Smack bang in the centre of her stomach, when she saw it she laughed a little.

She was completely convinced she could feel exactly where the bullet was, she could feel and locate every cell that had been torn apart. It burned so badly it didn't feel like a bullet, rather a red hot poker that someone stabbed her with.

"This is really isn't great." She mumbled, hearing another shot, this time one fired from near her.

Pope got to her first, kneeling down he pressed against her stomach, "You're going to be okay, it's okay, everything's fine." He said in quick succession.

She lent back so she was laying down, "You don't have to lie to me, but you should probably lie to JJ. He'd freak out, which wouldn't help anyone." She muffled - the pain truly setting in - trying to not really think about how she could feel streams of blood running down either side of her stomach, probably drenching the grass.

She wondered if blood was good for grass?

She wasn't really paying much attention to what was going on, between her quickly diminishing blood content and how much it hurt she zoned out. But she did say, to no one in particular that it really hurt. It was the understatement of the century.

JJ wasn't dealing with it as well as Otto, who pretty much accepted that she was dying. As they put her into the back of the van he threw up, after seeing someone you loved's blood seeping very quickly out of their body your stomach doesn't really like keeping its contents.

He sat next to her head in the van, she looked up at him.

"You really have to keep your shit together, or I will haunt you."

She felt this need to protect his feelings more than her own, it was like he was the one who got shot. Otto didn't say anything else, she just looked up at the roof of the van, she was trying not to close her eyes. While she accepted she was going to die she wasn't about to run into the Grim Reeper's with her arms open, she needed to at least try not to die.

When the rolled up to the hospital Pope got out first and dragged Otto out into his arms and ran straight in the emergency room, usually you have to wait six to eight business days before they see you but it turns out if you are actively bleeding out you get to skip the line.

Hospital staff began running toward Otto like she was a good Black Friday sale.

The last thing she remembered was looking up at the nurse who stood above her head, she smiled at her and told her if she was going to die she wanted as many painkillers as she could get. Preferably fentynal, she hadn't tried it before.
