prep school

Molly sat in the passenger seat of her mother's jeep as they drove to pick Rory up from hee first day at Chilton. She'd gotten out of school early due to someone pulling the fire alarm. Lorelai had been convinced that her daughter had pulled the alarm, though unexpectedly it hadn't been her.

"Then who was it? Did blondie do it?" Lorelai questioned as they pulled into the long drive of Chilton high. Molly struggled to hide her smile at the question, giving her mother as much of an answer as she needed. "Should've known." Lorelai laughed lightly, parking the car in the front of the school.

Chilton had been nearly identical to how Molly pictured it, the eerie effect of midieval gargoyles and old stone walls leaving her grateful for not attending. The endless amounts of stuck up rich kids that piled out of it only adding to her disgust as she stepped from the car. Molly had been dressed in her normal attire, her knee-ripped jeans and zeppelin shirt sticking out in the crowd of plaid skirts and blazers.

"Do you see your sister?" Lorelai asked as they sat themselves on the backend of the jeep.

"I see prissy biβ€”"

"Keep it in, firecracker, we're amongst the future presidents." Lorelai stated with a sarcastic 'awe' tone, taking a drink from her coffee.

"She's probably lost, and I have a full bladder so I'm gonna see if I can find a bathroom." Molly told her, setting down her own empty coffee cup.

"I think there's one when you first walk in." Lorelai told her, receiving a thumbs up from her daughter as she began to walk towards the doors.

She tried to make herself go unnoticed, but it had been obvious she'd stuck out like a neon sign. The stares from the prep students unphasing to her as she hadn't cared, it wasn't as if she'd attended Chilton or ever intended to. When she entered the school, she had no direction as to which way lead to the restroomsβ€” leaving her clueless in the crowded hall.

"Ya lost, red?" Molly was startled by the voice addressing her, her gaze being brought up to a tall blonde, attired in the same boring uniform. His hair was short, spiking up as if he'd only used his hand to style it, his charms not going unnoticed by Molly. He wore a curious look, a smirk hidden behind it as he stared her down.

"Yeah, do you guys have bathrooms or are you too good for them?" Molly questioned, though she'd practically insulted him, he let out short laugh.

"Down the hall, on the left." He answered, and she began to walk away, being pulled back by his hand grasping her arm. "I'm Tristanβ€”" he paused, waiting for her name but she only nodded in return, unimpressed. "And you are?"

"About to piss my pants in this hall if you don't let go." She retorted, his hand falling from her arm and she shoved her way through the crowd. Molly grinned as she got a distance away, turning back quickly, "Molly Gilmore!" She yelled to him, watching as his face lit with a smile.

"Well, nice to meet you, Red!"

After using the bathroom, Molly made her way back out to the car, no sight of Tristan as she saw her mother and sister. She made her way to the jeep with a prominent smile, running to hug her sister. Rory squeezed her back joyously, careful not to spill her coffee.

"Meet any cute boys today?" Molly joked as she broke the hug, starting towards the car.

"No, they're all weird and one of the girls already hate me." Rory said as they got into the jeep, Molly climbing into the backseat.

"Weirder than other guys?" Lorelai asked, getting into the drivers seat and starting it up.

"Yeah, they kept calling me Mary." Rory answered, her sister choking on a giggle at the nickname.

"You're kidding me! I can't believe they still say that." Lorelai exclaimed, partially upset while holding in her own laugh.

"Why? What does it mean?"

"Mary, like virgin Mary. It means they think you look like a goody-goody." Lorelai answered, Rory seemed offended by this as she let out a short gasp.

"You're kidding." Rory looked back to Molly who shook her head, still holding in her laugh.

"I meanβ€” they're not wrong." Molly spoke with a grin, shrugging as her mother glared back at her.

"Well I'm sure you'd get along with them just fine then." Rory retorted, rolling her eyes and Molly grinned wider, wondering if one of the boys had been the same one she'd met in the hall. "Why are you smiling like that?" Rory questioned, finding the unusual blush on her sister's cheeks odd.

"I'm not smiling like anything, this is my smile, seeβ€”" Molly gave her sister a toothy grin, earning strange looks from the two in the front.

"That's your cute boy smile! You met a boy in there, didn't you?" Lorelai exclaimed, knowing her daughter better than anyone.

"I don't have a boy smile!" Molly argued, her mother laughed out and Rory nodded in agreement with Lorelai.

"You do." Rory told her, Molly's brows furrowed and she looked between the two curiously. "When Wyatt got home from camp last summer and had that growth spurt, we titled that your boy smile. It's rare, but you have itβ€” it's a dead give away." Rory informed her, Molly fell back into her seat with embarrassment.

"Well, did you get his name? Maybe Rory can give out your number out." Lorelai insisted, a proud smile as she glanced back to her daughter.

"Right, me with a prep school boy." Molly muttered out, a dry laugh leaving her mouth.

"Name, Molly." Rory said, raising a brow to her and Molly groaned out, caving easily.

"Tristan." Rory's smile fell at the name, turning back in her seat.

"Assuming you met him?" Lorelai questioned, and Rory nodded slowly.

"He's the one who started calling me Mary." Rory answered, Molly's smile returned, still finding the name entertaining. "I guess I'll talk to him for you though."

β€”

The next day, Molly was sat in the diner, sat with Rory and Izzy, the two engulfed in homework while Molly stuffed her face with a burger Luke made. Wyatt had been working in the diner, attempting to talk to them each time he'd come by, only to get yelled at by Luke.

"Oh, I gave that jerk your number." Rory said, glancing up from her work momentarily to see Molly biting back a smile.

Izzy poked her head up curiously, "who?"

"This guy she met at Chilton yesterday, total douche, but I think that's what she likes about him." Rory rolled her eyes as she spoke, Molly giving her an offended look.

"He's a rich boy, he's bound to be douche-y and he really wasn't that bad when I talked to him." Molly defended, pouring salt onto her unsalted fries.

"He told you where the bathroom was, you barely talked to him." Rory retorted, and Izzy's eyes widened, giving her best friend a look of surprise.

"He must be really cute then." Izzy stated, Molly's flustered cheeks growing darker.

"He had thisβ€” gosh, I feel stupid, but he has a charm that I guessβ€”"

"Who?" Molly flinched at the voice, looking over her shoulder to see Wyatt.

"Molly met a boy, a Chilton boy." Izzy told him, Wyatt's face fell, a flash of irritation glinting in his eyes.

"Didn't take that as your type." Wyatt mumbled, refilling her soda as he stared her down.

"I think I've got to have a boyfriend to have a type." Molly responded, unable to meet his gaze as she could feel the disappointment radiating from him. "And it's nothing really, we met once, he probably wont even callβ€”" as if on cue, her phone rang loudly through the diner.

"You were saying?" Wyatt questioned, rolling his eyes and walking away as she took the phone from her pocket. She began to answer it, only for Wyatt to point to the 'no cellphones' sign and she quickly exited.

"Hello?" She answered into the phone, standing beneath the diner sign, Rory and Izzy watching her through the window.

"Is this Molly?" His voice rang through her ears and she smiled widely, turning back to Rory and Izzy to confirm it was him.

"Yeah, who's this?" She asked, as if she hadn't already known.

"Tristan."

"Oh, hey, prep school, what's up?" She asked, making herself comfortable on the steps of the diner.

"Maryβ€” your sister, said you missed me, already crushing on me, Red?" She could practically hear the smirk through the phone, her cheeks growing red once again.

"Ah, don't get cocky, maybe I wanted to yell at you for calling my sister Mary."

"And you don't think I'm right?"

"I don'tβ€” okay, maybe a bit." She giggled out, her face scrunching in disgust as the noise left her mouth.

"See, now you can't get mad at me." He said, and Molly fell silent, thankful he couldn't see her face in that moment. "So, do you come to hartford often, since you obviously don't go to Chiltonβ€” which I don't really get."

"Mostly for shopping, or to see my grandparents." Molly told him, ignoring the last bit as she didn't feel the need to tell him why she hadn't attended the school with her sister.

"Yeah? Well, maybe we can go to the mall sometime or whatever."

"Is that you asking me out?" She laughed out, glancing back into the diner to see they were no longer watching her.

"Maybe, I don't know, red, do you want to go out with me?"

"Yeah, that'd be fun." She rested her chin onto her knee, biting down on her lip with joy.

"Cool, I've got to go but I'll email you about the details later, sound good?"

"Yeah, sounds great."

"Bye, Red."

"Bye, prep school." The second the call ended, Molly jumped up from the steps, bolting back into the diner with the widest smile she could bare.

"Well?" Izzy asked, a smile wide on her face at her best friend's happiness.

"He asked me out." Molly answered, taking her seat back at the table.

"That's great! Wait, like a date or a hangout?" Izzy asked, Molly's smile fell as realized they hadn't specified.

"Either way he's gonna try to get in your pants." Rory mumbled, not a bit as excited as Molly and Izzy had been.

"Can't you at least pretend to be happy? I don't like Dean butβ€”"

"I think Rory's right." Wyatt said as he pulled out a chair besides the table.

"You have no say in this, you've dated like half the cheer team." Izzy retorted, the blonde rolled his eyes at her, turning to Molly.

"Just think, Molly, do you want some rich jackass being your first boyfriend?" Wyatt asked, Molly was taken back by his words. Wyatt hadn't been one to judge someone on where they came from, especially one he had yet to meet. But here he was insulting Tristan without having heard anything other than the fact he'd gone to Chilton.

"When did I say anything about him being my boyfriend, we're hanging out, that's it." Molly mumbled, hating the fact that her best friend was acting the way he was.

"I just don't want you to get hurt, Cherry." Wyatt told her, his tone softening and his frustration began to fade, not wanting to drag it into a serious argument.

"I'll be okay."
