mommy issues

Friday night dinners without Richard were quieter than Molly would've thought. The man had rarely put any input into the usual conversations held at the table, yet it seemed his lack of presence brought out the uncomfortable silence in the dining room. The sound of forks scraping onto their plates and the faint vacuum growling from the livingroom were the only thing Molly could focus on.

She'd been forced to attend each dinner, Emily unamused with her not showing weeks prior. The woman still rarely cared to meet her attention, despite her incessant nagging to get her to come. Even with her mother and sister there, the room was still tense. Lorelai and Molly had barely spoken a word in the three weeks of her being on house arrest, Molly having refused to give her mother any reason to believe she'd made a point.

Lorelai hadn't known of her recent relationship developments either, she hadn't realized Molly had snuck out of her room nearly every night. She also hadn't noticed the same Mercedes that had drove past their house three times in the last week after dropping Molly off.

"Molly." The red head sat up straight as she heard her name, believing to have been slouching too much. "How's that boyfriend of yours? Tristan, I believe." Emily asked, Molly looked to her mother as the words left the womans mouth.

Lorelai wasn't phased by the question, "he's not her boyfriend."

"Actually, he is." Molly corrected, what could Lorelai do at dinner? "He's good, haven't really been able to see him though." Molly answered, a sarcastic smile sent directly to her mother who's eyes were close to bulging from their sockets.

"That's a shame, why not?"

"Mom doesn't think I'm old enough to date." Molly answered, a fake frown planted on her face. If anyone were to have a say in whether or not Molly should be grounded, it would be Emily. Molly knew this conversation could go one of two ways, she was just hoping it would go the good wayβ€”at least for her.

"Lorelai, she has found herself a good young manβ€”"

"You mean a rich young man?" Lorelai questioned, Emily's eyes went cold for a moment then proceeded to ignore her daughters comment.

"You and Tristan looked like a wonderful fit, Lorelai has no right to believe you're too young to have a boyfriend. At your age she was doing much worse." Emily spoke of her daughter as if she hadn't been in the room, her words purposely targeted at the woman though she'd look straight to Molly with a smile.

Molly couldn't help but to feel a sting of guilt as she noticed her mothers fallen expression, "I think her worries are well intended.. I just wishβ€”"

"Mom, where'd you say dad was again?" Lorelai asked, not wanting to hear the words that we're preparing to leave her daughters mouth.

"Lorelai, Molly was speaking."

"No, it's okay, it wasn't anything really." Molly forced a smile to her grandmother, digging at the tropical dish in front of her.

Molly couldn't bare to be the center of their dinner any longer, knowing she'd slip up and say something completely out of pocket. Rory had stayed silent through the majority of dinner, other than when she'd been spoken to. But Molly could still feel her sympathetic blue eyes staring at her as her head hung low. She hated that.

Molly almost didn't want the dinner to end, knowing Lorelai wouldn't be happy with bringing up her grounding to Emily. She only had until Monday for her grounding to be done, but she was tired of having to sneak around to see her friends.

After saying their goodbyes and the front door closed behind them, Molly expected to be yelled at. To hear from her mother how she'd humiliated her. Instead, Lorelai reached into her purse, taking out Molly's phone and handed it over without a word.

"Whatβ€”"

"You're ungrounded, do whatever you want, I don't care." The passive aggressiveness of it made Molly keep her mouth closed, fearing if she spoke she'd wound up in more trouble.

The red head decided to climb into the back of the jeep, keeping quiet for the forty minute drive. Lorelai sat in the drivers seat humming along to whatever song came onto the radio. Rory had made few jokes during the drive, attempting to diffuse the tension and failing.

Molly knew her mother would continue to pretend to be fine until she snapped, but she had no idea how long it would take. She knew to prepare though, for the unusual outburst of frustration from the woman. All Molly could do was wait, possibly try and suck up to her. But now, it was the start of the weekend and she was free to do whatever she wanted.

When the car parked in the driveway, they all got out, Rory and Lorelai walking towards the house while Molly went the opposite direction.

"Where are you going?" Rory asked, Lorelai choosing to ignore her leaving.

"The diner, you can come if you want." Molly offered, it wasn't often Rory joined her but she never minded when she had.

Rory looked into the house for a moment, "I think I'll just stay home and watch a movie." Rory told her, the redhead nodded, throwing up a peace sign before making her way down the street.

The diner had already been closed for the night, nothing but dim string lights illuminating the inside. The door was locked and the closed sign flipped, but that didn't stop her from jumping up to reach the key on the top of the door. She quickly unlocked it, placing the key back where she'd found it and walked inside.

The bell above the door outed her to the two men upstairs, loud footsteps coming from the stairs. The curtain flew open and a half asleep Luke revealed with an scowl. His defenses fell when he saw the teen sat at one of the stools, a pastry in her hand.

"How the hell did youβ€”y'know what? Wyatt!" Luke yelled as he turned back to the stairs and disappeared into the loft.

Wyatt came down not long after, "Molly, not tonight." He said, his usual smile was vacant, replaced by red eyes and an unreadable expression.

"I'm ungrounded."

"That's great, but I'm not really up for anything tonight." He said, keep himself under the dark doorway not letting her see the tears that stained his cheeks. Molly knew something was up, there wasn't a minute that went by where Wyatt wasn't prepared to do anything.

"Is everything okay?" She asked, setting her pastry on a napkin as she tried to make out his features in the dark. Wyatt stayed silent, the only noise coming from him being a quiet sniffle. "WD, what'sβ€”"

"Molly, please just-just come back in the morning and I'll do whatever stupid shit you have planned." That had been another thing, he called her Molly and he'd only called her that when he was trying to be serious. She didn't like it, not knowing what was going on with him or if she'd done something.

"I don't have anything planned, I just wanted to hang out." She mumbled, receiving a hesitant sigh from him and he stepped towards her.

"I'm watching Dazed and Confused." He said, it wasn't a clear invitation but it was good enough for her to follow him up to the loft. "Why don't you ever go see Izzy?" He asked, pushing open his bedroom door and allowing her inside.

"Its nine, she's likely in bed already." She answered, making herself comfortable on the beanbag on his floor. Molly finally got a good look at him when the light in his room turned on, taking notice of his swollen eyes and the teardrops on his t-shirt. She knew if she were to ask why he'd been crying, he'd shut her down or make her leave. So, she stayed quiet.

Wyatt stared at her, debating on if he should tell her what had happened earlier in the day. What had caused him to fall into his bed and cry into his pillow. He knew she'd understand, but he hated the idea of saying it outloud and sounding pathetic.

But he couldn't not tell her, "my mom's in town."Molly's mouth fell open as he placed on a fake smile, the tears in his eyes forming once again. "She, um, she walked into the diner and she didn't say a word to me."

Wyatt and his mother had a simple relationship, tragic, but simple. When Wyatt had been conceived, it was an accident, two freshly graduated teenagers having too much fun one night. It wasn't until after he was born that his mother decided she didn't want him, practically tossing him over to a completely unprepared, yet willing, Luke. Wyatt hadn't officially met her until he was ten, when she showed up at the diner steps and begged to see him.

And Luke allowed her to. She'd gone several months with regular visits, until one day she stopped showing up. He hadn't seen her since and he was fortunate of that, having been content with it being him and his father.

"She justβ€” what? Walked in?" Molly asked, Wyatt nodded, slowly making his way to sit beside her. "Did she say anything to Luke? Wait, did he say anything to her?"

"She justβ€” she stood there, staring at me like she she was surprised to see me. She left before Luke had a chance to see her, he thinks I've been sick all day." He said quietly, wiping away the tears with frustration. "This is so stupid, I don't even know why I'm crying." Wyatt forced a chuckle, Molly's arms wrapping around him and holding him close.

"She doesn'tβ€”she doesn't deserve my fucking tears, I'm so stupid, I don'tβ€”"

"You're not stupid, this isn't stupid, okay? You have every right to be upset." Molly assured him, nearly letting a few of her own tears slip at his broken state.

"What if she comes back?"

"That's where I think you should tell Luke, and even tell her how you feel. Hell, if you want to tell her to 'fuck off', do it." Molly said, brushing back his untamed blonde locks to wipe away the fallen tears. "You got lucky with him, Wyatt, your dad did a hell pf a job raising you without her."

"The mommy issues just add to the character, huh?" He joked, trying to let out a short laugh as his tears began to stop. Wyatt sat up suddenly, "I need a joint." He said, rushing over to his nightstand and opening the drawer. Molly brushed off his quick emotion change, knowing he'd gotten out what he needed for now.

"Roof?" She asked, pointing up as she stood from the beanbag. He nodded and she pushed open the window, carefully climbing out onto the fire escape and up the latter.

"So, how's our boyfriend?" Wyatt asked once they'd gotten to the top.

"Our boyfriend?"

"Oh, yeah, he clearly loves me." Wyatt rolled his eyes as he took the lighter from his pocket, sticking the joint between his lips.

"Definitely gonna bring him to all of your games." She retorted sarcastically, taking his backpack that had been permanently filled with snacks and weed. "Let's just say there won't be any sharp objects laying around next time you two are in a room together." Molly mumbled, taking the joint as he passed it over.

"He wasn't that bad, but I still don't really like him." Wyatt confessed, laying back onto the roof with his head pressed against the side. "Oh, did I tell you Miss Patty caught me smoking the other night and took my shit, pretty sure she was hitting it when she walked away." Wyatt laughed as he told her, Molly coughing on the smoke as a laugh left her throat.

"Surprised she didn't just ask for a hit."

β€”

When Luke walked down to the diner the next morning, he was unamused. The sight of two teens passed out in the chairs with a deck of cards spread onto the table and an empty pastry dish being the first thing he'd seen. He couldn't open the diner until the mess was cleaned up, but it hadn't been his mess. He made a pot of coffee before heading back upstairs, taking one of the many confiscated items from their prank collection and walking back downstairs.

Luke made sure to place it between them, plugging one of his ears before setting the horn off. Molly was the first to fall from her seat, on high alert with her red curls standing like a scared cat. Wyatt wasn't so alert, waking up like someone had been gently shaking him awake, drool stuck to his cheek.

"Clean this up." Luke told them, taking his finger off the horn and tossing it behind the counter. "I want it spotless or you're both working today." He said, walking upstairs to leave the two with their mess.

"I think my eardrum blew out." Molly groaned, rubbing her ear harshly as she walked behind the counter to get herself a cup of coffee. Wyatt was somehow still half asleep, nearly falling as his eyes struggled to stay open. "Wyatt!" She yelled, his head popping up from his resting positon.

"I'm awake." He muttered, forcing himself out of the chair, taking the scattered cards off of the table. "The suns not even fully out!" Wyatt whined when he looked outside, seeing the start of the sunrise.

"Because it's six in the morning." Molly retorted, taking a long drink from the coffee before grabbing a rag to wipe down the table.

"I'm going back toβ€”ow! Ow!" Molly grabbed arm, pulling him back as he tried to walk up to the loft.

"This is mostly your mess, you can help and then sleep as long as you want." Molly slapped the rag to his chest, taking the pastry dish from the table and setting it back onto the counter.

It didn't take long for them to finish, Molly now wide awake as Wyatt went to his room to sleep. Molly didn't leave until after she finished her coffee, sitting in the diner and glaring at Luke for ten minutes. She walked home, greeting Kirk as she passed by him putting mail into the mailboxes.

Entering her quiet house, she went straight to her room, taking out an outfit and laying it onto her bed. Passing by her mothers room on her way to the bathroom, she saw the woman still sound asleep in bed and walked in. Molly laid beside her, hesitant to wake her up to get ready for work.

Before she could wake her, Lorelai rolled over, her eyes twitching as they slowly opened. The woman smiled to her daughter, using her hand to comb back her untamed red locks.

"I'm sorry, mom." Molly mumbled, Lorelai frown to her, leaning up to press a kiss to her forehead.

"You're okay, I think we were both a little too harsh." Lorelai said, a sincere smile forming as she stared at her daughter. "Next time, tell me before I have to hear it from your grandmother, okay? We don't keep secrets in this house, I want you to trust me with that stuff."

"I want you to trust me."

"I do, I trust you, it's those idiot boys I don't trust." Lorelai laughed, but Molly only faked a smile, she knew a part of her mother didn't trust her. But that was the part that was her. "Now go shower, you smell like french fries." Lorelai said, pushing her daughter up from her bed and Molly laughed this time.

"Oh, yeah, Luke's extra cranky this morning, that's my bad."

β€”

"Michelβ€”"

"Go away."

"Butβ€”"

"I'm working and you're in my bubble." Michel uttered out, not looking up from the guest book as he pretended to be busy. Molly was sat in the chair behind the desk after bringing her mother coffee from the dinerβ€”Lorelai having had no time to stop.

"I'm not in your bubble..." she stood from her seat, standing on her toes to see over his shoulder to the book. "Now I'm in your buβ€”wait, can I see this?" She didn't wait for him to answer before taking the guest book into her hands to get a closer look at the recently checked in names.

"Give that back, it's privβ€”"

"Is she still checked in?" Molly asked, pointing to the name she'd heard few times.

"Yes, now give it back." Michel snatched the book from her hands, glaring at her and she bit her cheeks, her eyes bouncing around the hotel.

"What time does she check out?"

"She bought the room for the week." Michel answered plainly, giving her a questionable look. "Do not bother the guests." He muttered, Molly nodded and ran into the kitchen.

"My favorite spice!" Sookie exclaimed, seeing the frantic teen enter the kitchen. "Uh, oh, you look like someone peed in your breakfast." Sookie stated, Molly took a seat on the chair by the door as the woman ran over with a plate of freshly made cookies.

"Sookie, I'm about to do something stupid and I know I shouldn't but I really want to." Molly told her, her leg bouncing vigorously as she bit into a cookie.

"Don't you do stupid things all the time? What's stopping you now?" Sookie asked, finding her way back to her stove.

"Morals? The thought of upsetting my best friend?" Molly answered in question, placing her head in her hands as she let out a sigh.

"Which one, blondie or the adorable little feisty one?"

"Blondie." Molly mumbled, glancing up to Sookie who was already looking at her with furrowed brows. "His mother is in town and she happens to be staying in this hotel."

"Whats wrong withβ€”"

"Jennifer is in town?" Lorelai asked as she walked in the kitchen, hearing the last bit.

"Mhm."

"Does Luke know?" Lorelai asked, Molly shook her head. "Wyatt?" She nodded, frowning at the thought of him last night.

"I could just hit that woman." Molly muttered, standing up from her seat, ready to walk up to the womans room.

Lorelai pushed her back into the spot, "as much as I'd love to see it, how about we let them deal with her?" Lorelai suggested, Molly rolled her eyes, hitting her head back against the walk with frustration.

"Mom, she left him and now she wants to pop back up and make him feel like shit? We both know Luke won't do anything either, he'll fall for it and then they're bothβ€”"

"Luke is a grown man and Wyatt is smart enough, you don't need to protect him." Lorelai told her, but Molly wanted to, she wanted to tell that woman how terrible she was for what she did. She didn't care if she had the best excuse in the world, she missed out on raising one of the best people Molly had ever met.

"Butβ€”"

"But, nothing."

Molly sighed at her mothers words, staying in her seat. She knew if she were to run into the woman, she wouldn't have restraints. She also knew she'd likely make things worse if she'd said anything to her. She would leave it be, but as soon as Wyatt was upset again, she wouldn't.
