He kept his gun pointed at the door, even though there hadn't been any shots in a while.ย

He was calm and collected, not scared in the slightest. He eventually stood up and took a few steps toward the door. He held his gun against his chest and looked out into the hallway. I watched him, a little worried that somebody could be out there that he didn't see.ย

I quietly walked over to him, grabbing my phone off the ground on the way. He noticed me beside him and he swore under his breath. He aimed his gun as he took a few steps out, but he put his other hand up, telling me to stay in the room.

He looked in both directions with his gun, before walking over to the railing to see what was happening downstairs. He kept his gun pointed downstairs but turned his head and gestured for me to come.

I walked over to him, not wanting to look down in case any bodies were down there. He put one of his hands on my arm and whispered, "Don't be afraid."

We started to walk down the stairs and he kept his gun ready to shoot at any moment. To my surprise, there were no dead bodies. But there were marks of blood on the floor, letting me that people were shot.ย

The sound of two people talking behind us made him quickly grab me and we entered the closest room possible. It was a closet, filled with nothing but cleaning supplies. He pressed his ear against the door, listening to the muffled conversation.ย

He turned and whispered to me, "Stay here."

I furrowed my eyebrows, "Where are you going?"

"Dealing with a problem. Stay here and don't make a noise," He ordered before leaving me alone.

I could hear his footsteps walk away, but then silence. The air felt heavy and I anxiously bit the inside of my lip.ย

I walked towards the sound of Dantes voice, my gun ready to shoot.

I saw him talking to Alessandros dad - the don. Alessandro always has me do his dirty work, but I guess his dad prefers Dante.

"When I asked you to kill him, I meant to sneak into his fucking house at night and shoot him in the head. Not at my fucking event!" The don yelled with an angry expression.

Dante replied, "I'm sorry. But he's dead and that's what counts, right?"

"No. You fucking ruined an important night for my son, now I can see why he never asks you to do anything. You've pissed me off, and now I can't allow you to live."

"Wait-"

Dantes plea was cut off by the don pulling his gun out and shooting him straight in the head. I wasn't surprised by this at all, and the sight of a man dying wasn't something unfamiliar to me. I took a few steps towards the don, letting myself be in his view now.

His eyes moved up to meet mine. I asked him, "Rough night?"

"I should've listened to Alessandro and hired you, Black. This guy was fucking pathetic."ย

I nodded my head and took one step closer to him. I told him, "I'll gladly complete hits for you. As long as you'll answer something for me."

He waited for me to talk.

"What do you know about Malcolm Bernard?"

The don sighed, "He's new to our world. He helps transport drugs for people with a higher status than him. But he wants more than that, he wants as much power as me."

"Is his life of value to you?"

"No."

I nodded, "Good to know."

I turned to leave, not wanting to leave Hailey alone for much longer. She's probably scared out of her mind, but she'd be even more scared if she knew somebody was willing to pay 2 million dollars to kill her.

And she won't get killed by a random pair of hands. She'll get killed by the same ones she feels safe around; mine.

But I bet the person that wants her dead is Malcolm Bernard. I might as well figure it out before I do anything - I still have 28 days.

I opened the closet door and saw her standing exactly where I left her. She looked up at me with her brown eyes and asked, "What happened?"

"Nothing, nobody's here I don't think. Come on, I'll drive you home," I said while placing my hand on her lower back.

She nodded and I walked her to my car, unlocking it once we were outside. We got in and I put my keys in, turning on my car. She spoke excitedly, "It looks so good!"

I looked at what she was talking about and realized it was the keychain she got me. I must've forgotten to take it off and throw it out.

I started the drive home and kept quiet the entire time. We've talked enough tonight, we don't need to anymore. She didn't speak either, she just looked out of her window. I could tell she was still a little scared from what happened tonight, which just served as a reminder to me that she and I are from different worlds.

I parked in her driveway and unlocked her door. I kept looking forward even though I could feel her looking at me. Her soft voice spoke, "Thank you for driving me home."

I just nodded, not looking at her. She got out and I found myself sitting there, waiting to see her get inside.

"The fuck am I doing," I said under my breath once she entered her house.

Before closing her door she turned around and gave me a small wave and smile. I just looked backward, reversing my car out of her driveway.ย

I drove along the road, feeling confused with myself.

What the fuck am I doing?

MARCH 4TH

H A I L E Y

I walked with Reid to his house, happy to be done with my classes for today. Reid didn't have any today, but he waited outside of my class for me to be done.ย

"Okay, so 100 companies are responsible for 71% of industrial emissions but Reid Black has to drink his coffee with a soggy paper straw?" Reid complained, picking the straw out of his drink and throwing it into a garbage bin.

I laughed and was going to respond when his phone buzzed. I spoke in a teasing tone, "Is that Brunooooo?"

"Shut up. Maybe it is, or maybe it's your dad," He said with a smile while reading his text.

I peeked and read part of the message. My face lit up, "Reid! He wants to go on a date with you!"

"I know. But I'm nervous," he said while putting his phone back in his pocket.

I nodded, "Well that's normal. But you like him and he likes you, so just try not to overthink it."

I wanted to tell Reid about yesterday, but I wasn't sure exactly what to say. Eventually, I just went for it and said, "So, I saw Aero yesterday."

His eyes widened and his eyebrows raised, "Really?"

"Yea. I went to a party with this guy and I saw him there. But there was some shooting, I don't think anybody died but Aero had a gun with him. Do you know why?" I asked him.

"He used to go to the shooting range before he moved out, so that doesn't surprise me. He's also really successful so he probably has a gun in case anybody tries to rob him," Reid explained.

I nodded. I guess that makes sense. As we walked closer and closer to Reids house I grew confused seeing Aeros car in their driveway. I looked at Reid, whose face lit up. He loves his brother so much.

He grabbed my wrist and started running to his house, dragging me with him. I shouted, "Reid! You're forgetting that I don't go to the gym like you do!"

He ignored me and we finally reached his front door. We walked in and Reid instantly called out Aeros name.

I looked around, but couldn't see anybody. Reids dad came down the stairs and said, "You just missed him. It was really nice of you to let Aero borrow your car, Hailey."

What.

Did Aero take my fucking car?

I felt Reids eyes on me and I had to come up with a lie, "Right. I forgot I told him yesterday that he could use it...he said something about his not working properly."

Reid looked disappointed, and I felt bad. But I felt more angry, knowing that Aero just look my fucking car. He has his own, whats he need mine for?

"I have to go home and talk to my parents. Have fun on your date tonight," I smiled at Reid before exiting his house.

I walked quickly to my house, hoping that he was there so I could kick his ass. My car wasn't in the driveway, but my moms was. I entered my house and called out, "Mom?"

She answered from the living room, "Hi sweetheart."

"Did Aero come here and take my car?"

"Yea, he said you told him he could use it. It's been so long since I've seen him, he's grown so much. He's so muscular now and tall, but I guess that's what happens when you don't see somebody for a couple of years," She shrugged.

"Did he say when he was going to bring it back?"

"No, why don't you text him and ask?"

I let out a sigh, knowing that I don't have his number. I asked her, "Can you drive me to his house quickly?"

I sat on his front porch, feeling a little stupid for thinking I could just waltz into his house when it has three locks. I sat, my back pressed against the wall and my legs straight out in front of me. He wasn't home, but I was going to sit here for as long as it took. My mom already drove off the second I got out of the car.

After about 5 minutes I got bored and started playing a game on my phone. After about an hour and a half, it died, making me groan. He still wasn't home. The sky had turned grey and rain started to fall from it, and I felt thankful that his porch was protected from the rain. I leaned my head against the wall and shut my eyes.

The wind felt cold against my arms, and I regretted not changing into a sweater before leaving. I kept my eyes closed, knowing I couldn't even text my mom if I wanted to.

"Hailey?" Aeros voice spoke after probably 30 minutes of me just sitting there and feeling like an idiot.

I opened my eyes and picked my head up so that it was no longer leaning against the wall.

He asked, "How long have you been sitting out here?"

"Why'd you take my car? I'm gonna kill you," I said, ignoring his question.

He let out a sigh and helped me to my feet. He pulled the grey sweatshirt he was wearing off and forced it around me.

He used his key to unlock his door and gestured for me to come inside. If I wasn't so cold then I would've said no. I took my boots off as I entered his house, the warmth of it feeling like a blanket around me.

As we walked further into his house he said, "Yea, I probably should've told you first but I don't have your number. I needed to go somewhere in secret but they know what my car looks like."

"Where are you going in secret?" I asked him.

He hesitated for a second, "Somebody I used to do business with. I wanted to see how their company was running now."

"You couldn't take the bus?" I asked, taking a seat on his warm couch.ย

He smiled slightly. He walked to the kitchen and started pulling some stuff out of the fridge. He responded, "I won't take it again."

He put my keys on the table, so I was free to grab them and leave at any moment. But with how much it was storming outside, I felt hesitant to drive. He noticed this and said, "You can wait until the storm passes."

I nodded and walked into the kitchen. I could tell he was preparing something for dinner, and I bit my lip to stop a smile when I saw that he had two plates out.ย

I asked, "Do you want any help?"

"No, I'm a good cook."

I sat at the table while he cooked. He gave me a phone charger and I plugged it in in case my parents texted me. When the food was done, he placed it onto two plates and walked over to the table.

He sat across from me and set out food down, and it smelt amazing.

"Are you okay?" he asked me.

I gave him a confused look and he continued, "After yesterday."

"Yea. I don't think anybody died, so I guess that's good," I said while taking a bite of my chicken.

This is the best chicken I've ever tasted in my life. He stopped cutting his food and looked up at me, "Do you like it?"

I swallowed and tried to keep a serious voice, "Not terrible."

He smiled once he saw that my serious face broke, and I laughed slightly.ย

He seemed different right now, more comfortable. He was allowing me to see some emotions from him, which was rare. He ate his food and listened to me talk, not telling me to shut up once.

Once we finished eating, I helped him with the dishes. I dried them and put them away after he washed them, and I found myself a little disappointed once I looked out of the window and saw the storm had stopped.

"I should go," I said quietly, gesturing to the window.

He nodded his head. I reached to pull the sweatshirt off of me but he grabbed my hands, stopping me. I felt a warmth form in my stomach as he continued to keep his hands on mine, "You can keep it. I have two of those."

"You have two of the same sweater?" I asked him through a slight laugh.ย

"Yes, there's a lot you don't know about me, Hailey."

I smiled at him before walking and grabbing my keys. He walked with me to his front door, and I took one step outside. But after that one step, I stopped myself and I turned around. I asked him, "Friends?"

He didn't respond for a while. I felt nervous that he was going to say no, but instead, he responded, "Friends."

I repressed my smile and said goodbye to him quietly. I drove home, feeling like an idiot for smiling so widely.

Friends with the coldest man on the planet.ย
