before dawn

i wake before the sun rises
with cold sweat all over my body
i place a hand over my chest to
calm the rapid beating of my heart

a nightmare;
i remember getting caught by the police
they took me back
and then i saw the church
decorated with ribbons and flowers
and i saw a ring over my finger
that stupid ring

i shut my eyes
forcing the images out of my mind
and turn to my side to get comfortable

i'm met with jeongguk's peaceful sleeping form
his breathing slow and calm
his lips moving every once in awhile

it's kind of comforting
despite the number of times i've
seen him asleep
he has the amazing ability to make a
person's heart go all soft and fuzzy

and i think:
no wonder everyone's in love with you

after failing to go back to sleep
i reach over for my phone
seeing that it's still awhile before dawn

heaving a quiet sigh
i lift the blanket off my body and go outside
the morning breeze is cooling
and i stretch my arms into the air
yawning shamelessly

and that's when i see the pond

the yellow lights that hang from the trees
are still shining brightly
casting reflections on the water's surface

looking around for awhile
i contemplate my life choices before
cracking my knuckles and saying to myself
"let's get this over with"
i raise my shirt over my head

mission: skinny dipping in the
middle of the woods at 5 in the morning
is a GO

my body shivers as i enter the water
it's freezing, but for some reason it feels nice?

i go deeper into the water until it reaches my neck
and i tilt my head back to look at the sky

i move my hands around under the water
creating waves on the surface
and then i'm flapping my wings
pretending that i'm an angel and that i can fly

by the time the sun finally begins to rise
and the sky brightens up
i hear footsteps coming up from behind me

my heart nearly jumps out of my chest
literally

"pinky?"
his voice is tinged with a drowsy slur
but thats quickly gone and replaced by a loud gasp
when he realises what i'm doing

the expression on my face
matches his perfectly for a moment
before his shock turns into amusement
"aye girl how's it going"

"ohmygod" i breathe out
and bend deeper in the water
praying that it isn't transparent
i am not about to expose my naked body
to someone i just met for two weeks

you're an idiot haru

a grin tears across jeongguk's face
and i throw my arms over my chest
feeling the heat rushing to my cheeks
thank god it's still a little dark

"y-yah!" i shout as he laughs
before putting his palms over his eyes
and then slowly turning around

"fine fine!
as a real man, i respect a girl's privacy"
he pipes

"a real man, my foot
you're a pervert in disguise"
i say as i climb back to shore
and grab a towel to wrap myself in
"you can turn around now"

he turns
and his smile broadens when he sees me
standing in nothing with a towel
but it's better than nothing—

changing my mind
i wave a dismissive hand at him
"you know what, turn around again
i'm going to head in and get change"

i put on a plain black t-shirt
and a pair of short jeans
before finally going outside again
while drying my hair with the towel

jeongguk is crouched by the pond's edge
playing with a small piece of stick
and drawing shapes on the ground

his eyes light up when he sees me
and he stands
dusting his clothes with his hands

"i'm taking you somewhere"

"the last time you did
we ended up in a haunted house"
i retort and jeongguk frowns

"somewhere better"
he smiles
and tucks his hands into the pocket
of his sweater
"and i can assure you
it's definitely not a haunted house
neither of us wants that anymore"
