One night

One simple drunken night

One sperm cell

And a handsome black man with his mesmerizing hazel green eyes and embedded tattoos was all it took to turn her life upside down.

The blood flowed through her veins and rushed straight into her cheeks making her face feel flushed with embarrassment.

The words went through her right ear and right, out of her left ear like meaningless words that held no weight. She couldn't see clearly, her vision becoming blurry.

Oh that's right, those were her tears, cascading down her cheeks

"It can't be". Cheyenne tried to let out, through her croaked throat while looking at the beautiful gynecologist in front her who went by the name Ms Robyn.

"I'm afraid that test says otherwise". Robyn's lips stretched out into a smile of sympathy. HerΒ  hands shook as she held the urine strip test she had taken a few moments ago.

"How accurate could these be?". She questioned onceΒ  again, feeling distraught and angry at herself, trying to put the pieces together.

"This was your urine taken and in most cases these never lie. They are 99% effective."

They never lie? Well they are lying to her right now

"What other test could I take? I mean there must be a mistake". She asked again but Dr Robyn simply shook her head.

"There is no mistake but to put your mind at ease, I will draw some blood and take you through it. It might take a while though". Dr Robyn reassured her, clutching her clipboard on the side.

"How long?". Cheyenne quietly uttered. She needed to make sure that the test were accurate, for her sanity.Β  She glanced down at her Cartier watch. The time read one forty-five.

Shit, she muttered to herself. She was late for her meeting.

"β€”It could take some hoursβ€” days as we need to make sure that everything is up to par and accurate".

"Alright let's do it". She nodded her head, anything to get accurate answers. Dr Robyn nodded her head and walked out to call the nurse. Cheyenne took a minute to gather herself but she was still in disbelief. She could feel the hot tears burning at the brim of her eyes, waiting to be released upon theΒ  confirmation of the news.

A older nurse walked in the room and smiled at her. Weakly returning her smile, Cheyenne sniffled and wiping her nose with a tissue. SheΒ held out her arm as instructed and waited for her blood to be taken.

The needle pierced through her skin making her feel the little pinch.

"All done. You can go on about your day. Dr Robyn will give you call about your results. Don't stress yourself baby". The nurse gave Cheyenne a reassuring smile and that kind of got her into a better mood but she was running late for her meeting.

She hopped down the bed and fixed herself before letting herself out the building. She hopped into her black Audi RSQ8 and sped towards the office.

Arriving thirty minutes later due to lunch time traffic, she grabbed her purse and hurriedly up to the seventh floor where her floor was located.

She didn't have time to freshen up her make up or even have a moment to herself before her assistant bombarded Cheyenne as soon as sheΒ stepped out the elevator.

"Ms Love, you are late". Chanelle said, looking flushed with anxiousness and grabbed her purse for her

"I know". Cheyenne muttered, letting out a breathe. She just needed to get through this meeting and everything will be fine.

"Here is all you need". Chanelle held out the thick manila folder with everything in it. She pushed her glasses further up her nose.

"What would I do without you?". She asked, walking towards the boardroom. Taking a couple of deep breathes and pushing the heavy glass door open, heads turned in her direction.

"I apologize for my tardiness and I hope I didn't keep you all waiting for too long. Now if we could all open the file in front us to the third page so we don't waste anymore time. Let's get straight to it...". Cheyenne started, grabbing the remote for the projector with her presentation.

☘︎

"Ms Love, there is someone here for you". Her assistant, Chanelle said, popping her head in. She looked up from her iMacΒ and nodded her head. She glanced down her Cartier watch and saw the time reading three thirty on the dot.

That was her last appointment of the day. She usually didn't take any appointments after lunch time.

She stood up from her seat and soothed her lilac dress which flaunted her curvaceous frame, making her way to her other desk in the corner of her room where she held her intimate meetings in.

"Ha Ms Love , it's always a pleasure seeing you!".

"Likewise Mr Carter, please take a seat". She said to her client with a smile although she wasn't in the greatest moods. Mr Carter was a black man in his late forties who is a investor and was always looking into funding apps developed by black people for black people.

Although Cheyenne's job was being a software engineer, she was recently promoted as a executive. She oversees that the programs are coded to perfection, whether the design team met the standards the client requested and furthermore before presenting it to the client.

"How can I help you today?". She asked with a pearly white grin on her face and fixing her glasses on the bridge of her nose. She needed to get a new frame.

"I think you know what I'm here for". Mr Carter said matching her smile.

"Another project? What is it this time?". The smile never left Cheyenne's face.

"Yes another project that I want you on in it. The last one, my client was very impressed and referred me to another one of his peers who is in need of your expertise".

"Oh wow, that's wonderful and I would gladly take on the project. My team and I will not disappoint ".

"I know you won't. When have you ever disappointed me?". Mr Carter stated.

"Never". She said with a chuckle.

"That's right. I'm sorry to have wasted your time for such small talks. We could have easily done this over the phone or over email".

"Oh no worries Mr Carter, thank you for coming in! It is always a pleasure working with you". A smile grace her face as they both stood up, shaking hands.

"I will make sure to send through all the details and paperwork". Mr Carter told her walking towards the door

"I will be looking forward to your mail".

"Take care Ms Love".

"You too Mr Carter!". And just like that, he walked out and closing the door behind him. Cheyenne did her little victory dance. She couldn't believe this was her life now.

At just twenty-three years old, Cheyenne had made a name for herself in the tech world as well as in the company she currently worked at. She has worked there since she was twenty years old and she has managed to bag a role as big as an executive for her department, making her the youngest black female executive.

They were also responsibilities that came with that role, but it was nothing she couldn't handle. She was a big girl and could handle herself. After all she's been alone since she was sixteen years old.

She soothed the lines off her lilac dress and walked back to her big glass table. She took a seat on her oak brown chair and took a swing and looking out the window.

Those thoughts started creeping up on her. She glanced down her watch again. It been two hours since she had left her gynecologist office and her stomach was in shambles.

She couldn't even stomach her late lunch, anxiously waiting for the news.

Her personal cell phone vibrated against the table. She shakily picked it up and swiped across the screen, accepting the call.

"Ms Love? This is Dr Robyn ".

"Yes?"Β  She forcefully let out. She could feel her tears pooling in her eyes and her throat getting all croaked up.

"Your blood work results came in and congratulations Cheyenne, you are indeed pregnant ".

As soon as those words slipped out Dr Robyn's lips, Cheyenne's world fell apart.

"What?". She stuttered, feeling a stray tear roll down her face.

"I could email your results so you can see for yourself, and we could schedule your first check up to see how far along you are and making sure you are in good shapeβ€”". Robyn rambled on but all Cheyenne could focus on was the news

In the back of her mind, she knew it was a possibility, but she didn't want to believe it.

She couldn't imagine herself pregnant now or let alone raising the baby on her own.Β  She had never envisioned herself being a single mother.

And there was no doubt in her mind that the man she had slept with will even want to step up. Hell, she wouldn't either, however she wasn't the type to abandon her responsibilities.

"Cheyenne are you still there?" She snapped out her thoughts.

"Yes". She cleared her throat and refocused, wiping her tears.

"I have set your appointment for two weeks from now. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me, okay?".

"Okay". Was all she could say. Dr Robyn said her farewells and left Cheyenne to be.

Fuck my life.

She thought.
