CHAPTER FOUR

Remember

- - - - -

"NO!"

The man cried over the body of his wife, a small bundle in his arms crying out. Alarms were blaring in the facility, all the doors were locked down and there was no way out for him and his new born daughter. The woman who lay dead on the hospital bed, blood pouring out of her mouth as her blue eyes blank stared up at the ceiling, had multiple bullet wounds.

Four dead Hydra agents were at his feet, his hands covered in their blood. He had used his strength to fight them off, but when they shot at his Lillian, he was enraged and beat them until death.

The baby in his arms held onto his ID card hanging around his neck on a lanyard. 'Marcus Michaels - Metro General Hospital' She stopped crying and hiccuped. Marcus looked to his daughter with blood shot eyes, carefully lifting her up to place a kiss to her forehead.

Lillian Kravinoff was his first love, and Katiana Michaels, he knew, would be his last. This wasn't supposed to happen, Lillian was supposed to be at the facility in secret but they had followed her. She was one of KGB's finest, her reflexes and speed were genetically enhanced for that reason. She got mixed up in Hydra business and now she was gone. Just like that. Because Hydra doesn't take any prisoners.

Marcus used his hand to close Lillian's eyelids. His daughter went quiet and he looked down to see her focussed on something across the room. He followed her gaze and glared at Strucker, the man holding a gun in his hands.

"What a fine creation. With the combination of her mothers and her fathers genes, she will grow to become a useful ally for Hydra." Strucker tipped his head to the baby, "I'll take her now." He said.

Marcus only tightened his hold on her and stepped back, "You won't take her away from me. I'll kill you before you take another step." He spat.

Strucker pursed his lips, humming slightly before smirking and lifting his gun. He stood exactly where he was, aiming at Marcus. "Don't worry, I'm close enough..."

A bang sounded and the baby cried out as red splattered on her. Marcus fell back onto the wall and slowly slid down, a red trail following. His arms were limp around the baby as she wriggled around. Strucker dropped his gun before taking steps toward his mission. He grinned coldly at the girl as she looked up at him, golden brown eyes glassy.

"She is gorgeous." He said, nodding to the dead eyes of Marcus Michaels.

"Ssh, little warrior." He whispered, scooping her up in his arms. Katiana's cries dialled down into small whimpers and Strucker wiped away the blood, "You're in good hands now."

"Herr Strucker."

He looked behind him as his men walked in, dressed in their tactical gear. They gave him a nod as others flooded in with oil barrels. They drenched every inch of the place, ready to torch it. Strucker calmly walked out of the facility, the heat following him as he went.

"Ready to meet the others, Ana?"

HYDRA BASE, EIGHT YEARS AGO

A seventeen year old girl blankly stared in the space in front of her. She was strapped down as one of the men injected her with serum to suppress her abilities, making her weak. Her head, chest and neck were attached to wires that monitored her. Screens were in the area behind her, showing the brain activity and vital signs. Ana clenched her hands into fists when she felt the chemicals take effect.

She was dressed in cargo pants, combat boots and a black tank top. She kept her face forward and glanced at Alexander Pierce as he approached her, his hands in his expensive suit pockets. He wasn't the only one to come in.

The Winter Soldier strolled inside, eyes catching the girl in the chair. His eyes looked around, observing the people and equipment. He stayed back as he was ordered to, but he kept his gaze on Ana.

Pierce was on the phone with Baron Strucker, as he explained the terms of their deal. "No, I don't want her to stay at the facility, she'll grow irritated... She'll go back to the couple, yes... SHIELD has been monitoring her ever since she's learnt of her powers... It's too risky keeping her under... When she's older we'll make it seem as if she was killed in action and take her back... It's an excellent and practical plan. Great." He smiled before pocketing his phone and moving to stand in front of her.

Ana looked up as he crouched down slightly to look at her. She hollowly eyed him before licking her dry lips and speaking up, "Am I going back home?" She rasped out.

Pierce scrunched his nose before clicking his fingers at a scientist, "Hey, get her something to drink, she sounds like she's dying." He ordered.

He glanced at Ana who's eyes followed the man approaching her with a glass of water. "Yes. It's been two years and anymore of that will expose what were trying to do here. I can't talk my way out of every SHIELD situation." He explained. Ana gingerly held the cup of water before gulping the whole thing down.

The Winter Soldier felt someone looking at him and turned his head to an agent that eyed him. He blinked before turning his gaze back to Ana when she started talking.

"And what exactly are you trying to do here?" She asked.

Pierce beckoned the Soldier and patiently waited as he made his way toward him. "You've meet him before, haven't you?"

Ana looked up and straightened up slightly, shuffling into her chair further. The Winter Soldier peered down at her as Pierce waited for her reply. Ana furrowed her eyebrows, "He looks familiar. I'm sorry, I'm not sure." She mumbled, looking down.

Pierce waved his hand with an 'eh' before chuckling, "It's not that important. But what is, is that you're training, you're preparation will lead you to become something magnificent." Ana looked up at him curiously, "In a few more years, when you're older, you will become a big part of this world. You will shape our century, along with him."

The Winter Soldier and Ana locked eyes, as Pierce gestured to him. "You will both aid our country with your unwavering loyalty and enhanced abilities. The Winter Soldier and the Winter Warrior." He said.

Pierce turned his head to one of his colleagues and shrugged a shoulder, "It has a nice ring to it, don't you think?" He asked with a grin.

Ana's vitals spiked as if she was experiencing a panic attack. The scientists and doctors all crowded around the monitors as Ana's eyes glanced between the Winter Soldier and Pierce. She clenched her fists, breathing heavily. It felt as if her head was being ripped apart and she couldn't reach up to cradle it.

The Winter Soldier stepped back, eyes looking to Pierce and waiting for him to stop whatever was happening to Ana. Ana stomped her foot with a gasp, leaning forward and crying out. Pierce narrowed his eyes at her, "What's happening?" He asked.

The doctor turn to him in alarm, "It's her mind, something must have triggered a memory that allowed her to remember. Her system has already filtered the serum. She isn't weak anymore!" He exclaimed.

Pierce nodded his head at Ana for the Winter Soldier to restrain her, "Keep her still." He turned to the scientists, "Erase her memory, now! If she gets out this whole thing will go down! Go, go!"

Ana's crazed eyes stared in the Winter Soldier's as he used his metal arm to clamp around her wrist and his other to force back her head. She shook her head, widening her eyes at the recognition of his own.

"I- I know you!"

Ana then screamed, the head gear wrapping itself around her head and electrifying her. The Winter Soldier felt her hold onto the arm rests, the metal bending at her touch. He stepped back as Pierce paced back and forth, rubbing his chin nervously.

Ana arched her back, her hands flying open at the intense electric current flowing through her head. The straps holding her down ripped open and when the torture stopped, the doctor quickly injected her. Everyone on the facility was quiet, watching the girl as she fell limp in the ruined chair.

The Winter Soldier stepped forward to check if she was breathing. Seeing the small rise of her chest was good enough for him and he walked out of the facility, his metal arm slamming the door closed.

Pierce breathed out before pointing at one of his colleagues, "Call the partners, she goes home and they'll prep her."

"Ana..."

"Ana?

"Ana!"

Natasha held onto Ana's arms, shaking her to try and get her out of her daze. Clint was looking back from the pilot chair in worry. She was quietly mumbling to herself much like Natasha had and then all of a sudden she screamed and grabbed her head in agony.

Ana opened her eyes, the red colour fading and gasped. She on instinct, grabbed whoever had their arms on her and twisted them so she was pulling their arm back. She dropped them on the floor and stepped on their shoulder and pulled, breathing heavily.

Natasha kicked her leg out, bringing it up to hit Ana in the stomach. When she was free from her hold, she jumped back up and tackled her down. Ana landed on the ground of the quinjet, her head smashing into the metal that supported the monitors.

Everyone watched as Ana reached up to her head, groaning at the pain. She shut her eyes and placed her palms to her eyes. Natasha gently wrapped her hands around Ana's, pulling them away from her face.

"...Ana."

"Nat?"

Ana opened her eyes and looked at the woman that restrained her. She then frowned deeply, "I'm sorry, I- I didn't mean to do that." She apologised.

Natasha looked to her partner, "It's okay." She assured.

Steve helped Ana up along with Tony. Bruce was watching the whole thing wrapped under his grey cover and Natasha just closed her eyes, ducking her head when Ana began to cry.

She was set on the wall chairs and dropped her head, placing a trembling hand to it. Tears fell to her lap and she shook her head at Tony when he asked what happened.

"I- I remember."

Clint landed the quinjet onto the ground and lowered the ramp. Ana had fallen asleep during the ride, some part of her was content in having everything returned but the other part wished she had no idea what she went through. Thor gently woke her up and gestured for her to follow.

Ana's lips pulled into a small smile when she saw where they were. Clint's farm. She had only been here twice and that took a lot of convincing for Fury to let her meet Laura and the kids.

"What is this place?" Thor asked.

Tony shrugged, "A safe house."

Clint waved his hand for Ana to join him and waited until she was by his side with Nat to reply, "Let's hope." He said. Clint pushed the door open and walked inside, letting his team enter his home.

"Honey, I'm home." Clint called, looking around the living room.

"Hi. Company. Sorry didn't call ahead." Clint said with a smile on his face, as his very pregnant wife walked over to them.

"Hey." She smiled, wrapping her hands around him.

"This is an agent of some kind." Tony said. Ana furrowed her eyebrows in sadness, her adoptive family were Hydra agents.

"Gentlemen," Clint turned to face his friends, "This is Laura."

"I know all your names." Laura said sheepishly.

Ana perked up when she heard the sound of running feet, coming toward them. Clint smiled, "Ooh, incoming." He said, lowering his body.

A young girl ran into her father's arms with a big smile on her face. Her older brother followed and hugged Clint.

"These are smaller agents." Tony said, pointing at the kids.

"Did you bring Auntie Nat and Ana?" Nicole asked with a grin on her face.

"Why don't you hug her and find out?" Nat said, peering out from behind Steve and walked over to her, who ran into her arms. Natasha pulled her up and hugged her, holding her against her hip.

Callum grinned at Ana and went to hug her. She pulled a smile for him and ruffled his hair affectionately. "Hey, bud!"

Callum pulled back and used his hands to tap her arm, "Why are you sad?" He asked quietly, leaning in to her and shyly looking away from Steve, Thor, Bruce and Tony.

Ana shook her head, "I'm not sad, just tired. Being a hero is hard work." She told him with a chuckle.

Callum opened his mouth letting out an 'ohh' before giving her a smile. Nicole and Natasha stepped next to Ana, the older woman giving her hand a squeeze. Ana looked at Nat and gave her a small smile. Nicole tugged on Ana's belt, "Ana?"

Ana bent down to hold her, "Hey, darlin'." She greeted.

"Sorry to barge in on you." Steve said.

"Yeah, we would have called ahead, but we were busy having no idea that you existed." Tony said.

"Yeah, well Fury helped me set this up when I joined. He kept it off SHIELD's files, I'd like to keep it that way. I figure it's a good place to lay low." Clint said, arms wrapped around his wife and his son.

"Oh, I missed you." Natasha said. Laura smiled warmly at Natasha, as she leaned a bit forward towards Laura's baby belly. "How's little Natasha?" Natasha asked, gently touching Laura's big belly.

Ana walked next to her and gave Nat a look, "I thought it was little Kat." She said. Laura chuckled affectionately and rubbed Ana's shoulder.

"She's...Nathaniel." Laura said with a cringe.

Natasha's smile frowned and Ana cooed softly at the name, and Nat leaned forward to the baby bump and whispered, "Traitor."

Thor suddenly stomped out of the house onto the yard. "Thor." Steve called after him.

Ana slightly turned to face Steve and he gave her a nod before going after him. She sighed and a hand touched her shoulder, "Come on, let me make you some hot chocolate. You look like you could use it." Laura said.

Natasha wiped a hand on her cheek and scowled at the dirt, "Imma take a shower. I'll check up on you when you're ready." She gave Ana a pointed look.

Ana nodded in return and she followed Laura into the kitchen. "Do you have the small marshmallows? I like those."

"Of course we do."
