AVERY

"Ma'am you are supposed to meet Mr Keith in ten minutes." I look up at Stacy, who is poking her head through the door.

"Oh yeah. Thanks for the reminder, Stacy." I smile at her and complete signing the papers in front of me. After gathering up the papers and the files, I head out. I reach the gate of the hospital and take a step out in the compound. My eyes scan the area for the guards. Jason and Rob are both heavily built and have intimidating personalities but they are good. Jason is soft-spoken and Rob is the quiet one. When I don't find either of them, I look over at the spot where their car stands. I don't spot their car either. Dylan gave me 'strict' instructions to not take a step without them. Provided that they were not outside my office and their car is not here, I figure they must have left to go get something to eat. I pull my phone out, 3 texts. One is from Jason. It says they are going to be back in 10 minutes and to call him if I need anything. Well seems like 7 minutes are left. Oh, and there is a text from my husband too. Biting back the smile forming on my face, I open the text.

Dylan: Just took a nap, couldn't sleep well :((

Grinning down at the text like a fool, I make my way to my car while typing the reply.

Me: try taking a bath.

His reply comes instantly. Sneaky bastard.

Dylan: Waiting for my wife to get back from work. We like cleaning each other ;) had a good shower this morning.

I purse my lips together to hold back the smile and open my gallery. While getting dressed this morning, I decided to take a mirror selfie in my...well, just my panties. I don't know why I did it. It's not like I do it every day. I pull it up and send it off to Dylan. Silencing the phone, I throw it onto the seat and drive off.

Halfway to the restaurant, I realize I didn't text Jason, damnit. But it doesn't really matter, it is close anyway, just about four blocks away. I continue driving. I'll just text them before leaving or something.

I drive towards the restaurant but my mind keeps going back to Dylan. I can't help but wonder what is his reaction. Okay, I kind of already know that. After parking the car, I go in.

I spot Mr Cameron Keith at the table the waitress is leading me towards. "Hi, Dr Simpson, " he says standing up and holding out his as I reach him. We've worked with him before, he is a government representative.

Shaking his hand, I nod. " Nice to see you, Mr Keith. By the way, it's Walker now, " I say correcting him politely. His eyes fall on my left hand's ring finger.

He smiles warmly. "Oh, congratulations on your marriage. I'm sorry I didn't know."

"It's alright. Shall we start?" I ask, moving towards my chair.

"Yes, sure, " he says and we both sit down.

The meeting goes on for quite a while. The offer sounded pretty good definitely something I would like to work more with. I am all up for treating animals be that stray or farm. After the meeting, we bid goodbyes and leave. While in the parking lot, I pull out my phone which I had previously silenced and put into my purse. As soon as the screen lights up, my phone floods with incoming texts. Seeing the names, the number of texts and missed calls, my heart sinks to the pit of my stomach.

Dylan: Holy Fuck, Olivia. Get yo ass back home. This is soo good!!

His first message was about the picture luckily but...the rest.

Dylan: Where the fuck are you?
Dylan: Why did you leave without Jason and Rob?
Dylan: Pick up my fucking calls!
Dylan: Call me right now.

And that last text was about fifteen minutes ago. I know what is to come if I call him right now. I would rather go back home and deal with him than on phone. I bite down on my lip and choose to ignore his texts for now. I see a few texts from Jason has come too, and a few from Brad.

Jason: Maam, where are you?
Jason: Maam, please pick up the phone. We need to make sure that you are ok.
Jason: Maam we will be there in ten minutes, please don't leave the restaurant without us.

I hit the reply.

Me: I am fine. I'll wait in the car.

Jason: Maam, if you wait inside the restaurant in a crowded place, that would be safer. We are almost there.

I frown down at the phone. Who is going to chase me on a Saturday? Don't they have to sleep? I am being funny in my mind when I hear the sound of an engine, behind me. Something feels eerie, just not right. I feel a shiver run up my spine making me stop in my tracks. I don't turn around right away. I keep moving. It must be just in my head. The sound of the engine intensifies. My breath catches in my chest. Shaking away the heaviness, I turn my head around, slowly. Two bright headlights, fall directly on my face. I squint my eyes and cover my face with my arm. The engine begins to roar. Furrowing my forehead, I fight against the light and remove my hand. Seems like the headlights are slowly heading this way. Before I know it, the tyres screech against the ground and the light moves toward me at full speed.

My eyes widen in realization and I turn around to run. Instead, I stumble and fall because of my pointy heels. "Ow," a grunt leaves my mouth. I hear the sound of the engine coming closer to me. I try to stand up but fall back. "Fuck!" I kick off my heels and pressing my hands on the ground, I crawl in between two cars in the side, just at the right time. The black truck runs over my heels, literally smashing them. "Ahh!" I scream pressing my palms against my ears, literally terrified.

Coughing, I scramble up on my feet. The truck stops with a screech and turns around. I stand there gaping at it, unsure of what is happening. Past the bright lights, only black tainted windows are visible. The tyres screech again and it approaches me. Somehow I know that the two cars are not going to stop it. I turn around and run, towards the other end. A loud thud approves my thoughts. Tears start running down my eyes. I hear the sound of the engine, coming closer to me. It escaped from that part! I am running away from the exit and I can't think straight enough to figure out another way. My toe hurts as I hit something on the ground, but I don't care. I lost my bag when I fell. It must be between the two cars. Probably smashed now. My phone is in there, I can't even call for help.

I start turning my head but something hits my feet and I stumble down again. My knees hit the concrete. "Ahh!" I screech in pain. More tears escape my eyes. Placing my hand on the ground, I struggle to get up but fail and fall back down with a yelp. I squeeze my eyes shut. A chain of sobs leaves my mouth, due to pain and fear. The engine sound is right near my ears. I don't want to die, not anymore. I want to live. I have a reason now.

Right before the car hits me, it stops. I hear footsteps. More than one. Why do these people want to kill me?

"Ma'am?" Hearing Jason's voice, I look up at the face of the person standing beside me and that's all I remember before I faint.

******

"Thank you, " I hand over the glass to Mrs Griffin. She takes it from my hand and leaves. I glance over at Dylan. With his back towards me, he sits at the foot of the bed. His elbows rest on his knees, and his hands are in fists. He hasn't spoken a word since the doctor left. This time, I can't even force him. I did bring it onto myself this time.

Brad enters the room and comes to sit beside me at the edge of the bed. "Are you ok?"

"Yeah..." I nod with a tight smile.

"You don't look ok, though. How did all this happen? Why did you leave alone?"

I look down and tell him everything. I know Dylan is hearing. I can feel him getting angrier with every word I speak. "I thought the meeting was close so..."

"Oh, God! Did you see who it was?" He asks.

"No..." I answer him truthfully. I couldn't see a thing except for the headlights and the tainted windows.

He scoots over and wraps his hands around my shoulder. I bury my face into his chest and sniff. "It'll be fine." His hands run up and down my back, soothing me.

"Dylan." We both look up at Mike when he calls Dylan from the door. He glances at me cautiously and then back at Dylan, "Can you come with me?" I glance at Dylan. He nods a little and leaves the room, without even looking at me, once. Mike and a few officers along with the guards are in the downstairs living room.

We sit there silently for a while before Meli appears at the bedroom door. "Hey!"

She scurries toward me. "I'm ok. Meli." I say. Immediately Brad shoots up on his feet and takes a step towards the door. Leaning over, I grab his wrist quickly and snap, "Brad!"

"I'll be out." He mutters trying to pull his hand away from me.

"You don't have to run from me," Meli says, with a straight face.

"You think I will run from you? Why exactly?" He retorts. I squeeze his wrist, but that doesn't help.

Melissa's jaw ticks. Wiping her head towards him, she says, "I seriously don't want to talk to you right now. Avery has been attached for the second time."

"Go on, pretend as if you are the only one concerned. That's all you do right? Pretend!" He says throwing his hands in the air and barges out of the room. I sigh in disappointment. The two of my best and only friends, can't even be in the same room with each other.

"I'm so sorry, " Meli says.

"It's ok, Meli."

She holds my hand and says softly, "I am sorry for something else too. I have to leave today. But I need you to call me whenever you need, ok?"

Pursing my lips, I nod. "Yeah...okay..."

She pulls me into a hug. "Don't worry, I'm here."

****

I've been sitting here all day, now in my PJs waiting for Dylan to come back. He didn't come home for dinner, said he will be late. I rest my head against the headboard and sigh heavily. The bedroom door opens and Dylan steps in, closing the door behind him. I look at him, but he doesn't turn his face this way. Without a word, he stomps towards the bathroom. I get down and follow him, my frustration has reached the peak. "Dylan, will you ignore me now?" He doesn't say a thing instead he pushes the jacket off his shoulder and throws it on the floor. I reach out and tug at his forearm, "Dylan, talk to me."

He turns around with a hard glare. "What do you want me to say?" he growls, clenching his jaw.

"Anything!" I shout.

"Oh yeah?" He turns around completely and steps towards me clenching his jaw. "Should I say I proud I am that you can run? Or should I praise you for not getting killed this time?" He shouts and I flinch. His breath is staggered and his chest is heaving up and down rapidly. I bite the inner part of my cheek as tears hit the rim of my eyes.

"Dylan..." I murmur.

"What?!" He yells again. Pursing my lips, I shake my head and leave the bathroom, fighting my sobs.
