"Did you see her?" Jackson had asked Kyle when he returned.

"No," Kyle said. "I told you. I just went for a walk."

"Alright," Jackson said wistfully. "The rabbit's cooked."

It looks a little well done... Kyle thought, but nodded his thanks, and took the rabbit off the fire, leaning the stick it was speared on against a nearby tree to cool off.

"Man. Madelyn is just...out of this world! She's the most perfect girl I've ever met," Jackson said to himself. "What do you think?" He sounded like he was asking Kyle, but Kyle knew Jackson didn't really want his opinion. He answered anyway.

"Yeah, I've never met anyone like her," Kyle agreed, though he was already slightly unnerved by this conversation. "I can't believe she's lived out here so long, and yet she didn't even know she was pretty until..."

"Well don't get any ideas," Jackson snapped. "I called her first."

"First of all, you can't claim a person as yours," Kyle interrupted. "And second, I don't know if she's actually interested in you. You never know maybe she..."

"Maybe she what?" Jackson laughed. "She'd take interest in you?!" He laughed again. Kyle blushed. "You are incompetent kid who can't lift more than fifty pounds in the bench press! All you can do is start a fire. I caught this rabbit. You prepared it. I cooked it. I did more work, and you know why?" He paused for effect. "Because I'm tougher, stronger, taller, and better than you are."

He's such a jerk. Kyle thought. But he knew better than to talk back to Jackson. It never ended well. And he didn't have any replies to what was just thrown at him. He was at a loss for words. And worse than that, Jackson was getting to him a little bit.

"You probably don't even know how to talk to girls," Jackson said.

"I know better than you do," Kyle muttered to himself. It came out louder than he meant.

"Oh yeah? Prove it." Jackson snapped.

Kyle could've told him about his conversation with Karina, how she'd been so open with him, not that it meant anything or counted as something. But he knew she wouldn't want him to tell.

And he could've told Jackson about the conversation he just had with Madelyn in the tree. But he knew she also didn't want him telling Jackson.

So instead of saying something, an embarrassed silence hung in the air, taking the place of his reply.

"Well, just as I expected," Jackson retorted. "Nothing."

Kyle just rolled his eyes and grunted an agreement to the rest of Jackson's conversation, not even listening to what he said, for he was lost in his own thoughts. I doubt I'm good enough for her. I mean, some of the stuff Jackson just said about me is right...

He sighed. If Madelyn heard any of that, would she disagree with Jackson? Would her thoughts and opinion towards him change if she considered his lack of strength, height, and experience with girls? Not that Jackson deserves her either.

He went to sleep early that night, and neither boy had a single dream.
